After two moths with my Pixel 4, I still love the phone other than battery life. If it is just a normal day and I don't go to work, the battery life is fine. But I use my phone heavily ( taking dozens of pictures, streaming music, checking documents ) at work and it may make it six hours in a normal shift, even when only using wifi. If I didn't have wireless chargers in the office, I would be screwed.

I use the Soli radar feature only at work. I love it because now I can skip songs while driving a forklift without taking off my gloves or even slowing down. Boss coming around the corner while playing DaBaby or Uncle Luke? Wave until it skips to Solange or Duke Ellington.

Okay guys need help and opinions pls.

I dropped my phone and of course cracked the screen. So gonna grab a new phone this week.

I'm with ATT and as of right now between the Pixel 4 XL and the Note 10 Plus. Ive been using a Pixel 3XL the past year. I've previously used many Nexus phones and always kind of been on the pure Android bandwagon. I've used Notes years ago last one being probably Note 5 back in 2015.

My hesitations on the Note are purely One UI. I hate Samsung and Bixby. I used my GFs S10+ for a few weeks and really loved the screen but other than that it was okay I guess.
My hesitations with the Pixel are probably based on the fact that what we were expecting the Pixel to be and it having some let downs. I was going to hold off and wait and upgrade in 2020 originally since I wasn't super impressed with reviews.

Any thoughts for you Note or Pixel 4 guys?

Liking my Pixel 4XL not loving it like I did the 3 XL. Google still have 3s for sale? Think if u get a Samsung you will still hate the bloatware.

Based on your post above, I think you would be a happier with the One Plus or Pixel4 (XL Specifically to avoid battery concerns, which are concentrated on reviews of the smaller non-xl version) than the Samsung.

One thing to keep in mind, is that even if the Pixel 4 and 4XL are "let-downs" and/or overpriced, they are still better phones than the samsungs, in my humble opinion.

also, I echo Bishop above, you won't want bloatware and a later/lessor version of Android since you've been with the Pixel and Nexus line for so long.

You my friend are the winner I think. Looks like I'm gonna most likely grab the One Plus 7T Pro McLaren Edition.

Looked sweet as hell online and went and played with one and even more beautiful in the hand. Wish it had wireless charging but I'll make do.

I disagree, but its kinda complicated. I blame carriers and varying newly minted competing protocols (ala HD DVD vs Blu ray etc) and lacking universal standards on things that would make it scale better for both customers, manufacturers and in a way carriers.

The 2019 5g modem (and also 2020 modem plans which were just released) by Qualcomm were not strong. I don't disagree with phone manufacturers who didn't put it into their phones, even those launching in Oct 2019.

I am generally covered to a significant degree with Sprints 5G in DFW area. However, I get sometimes 100, 125 and even peak at ~150mbps on Sprint LTE w/ the P3XL. I wish 4g was wider and stronger, but that's a separate rant.

Qualcomm's release indicates that they didn't make much progress on integrated 5g modem(s) for 2020 flagships. It is still a discrete part (costlier, eats more battery, more space, etc) Here is a great deep dive: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/201...65-is-a-step-backwards-for-smartphone-design/

Disagree with what? I just don't really know anything about 5G and am trying to understand when my phone being 5G capable or not will be something I should care about.

think about what you actually do on your phone to want 5G

nothing I do will be better having that speed increase vs just solid 4G

especially since I don't have unlimited data with google fi

I disagree that we need 5g on phones (now).

    long version:
I see the justification as an add on to create a new class/segment the ultra premium phone (think of the carrot in front of the Galaxy Note 10 5g+ or whatever its called) but everyday flagships should wait another model year, which I think is counter to your original statement. Keep in mind, that Samsung model I referenced is hundreds more than the plain jane 4g model 95% of people buy. I don't want the P4 to cost hundreds more and have 5g, I want it to cost hundreds less and not have 5g, this will change in future years - of course. I guess there are larger points about market segmentation, consumer preference, technology maturation w/r/t economies of scale, etc to be had. As a sidepoint. I saw surveys years ago that the majority of iPhone 4 owners believed it was 4g capable because the android phones of the time were 4g capable. Apple (who have tremendous margins on the iphones) waited until the iPhone 5 to add 4g support. Apple has waited on other technologies before too (NFC and wireless charging come to mind) and their phones are adored by millions and are/were the most valuable company on earth.

If you didn't have those business considerations and you were looking a phone in a vacuum, a 5g model would be "more powerful" but not worth the tradeoffs, imo.

to piggyback of what Lyrtch said,

5G has great use cases and really pushes the envelope, but our phones don't need to do this kind of stuff as a general rule. The technology helps infrastructure/medical/autonomous vehicles/enterprise etc. Google "5g use cases" if you want to see specifics from experts. I think conceptually it will trickle down to consumers like us later, but if I can get 150mbps down w/o 5g? what would 5g really bring to me as I go about my day. This may seem like a debby downer or non sense, but I think it goes to the marketing machine that the carriers are, how they have everyone saying 5g!

I halfway said it in the above post, but we just need full/wide rollout of LTE. I don't know band by band specifics of each carriers spectrum (which determines real world performance), but at least on Sprint, I don't need 5g - I just need 4g to work as advertised/capable.

I think you misunderstood my original post as I don't have any take regarding 5G. I just didn't know what it was and if/when it'd be bothersome to not have it on my phone (the answer seems to be not for a good long while). I do appreciate the insight you gave though.

    I'm buying the s20+ Ultra.

    https://ww.9to5google.com/2020/01/13/galaxy-s20-ultra-specs-leak/#

The Samsung Galaxy S20 is on its way and leaks have been rolling out this week. Today, we’ve got a short spec list for the Galaxy S20 Ultra and it’s going to be pretty crazy.

According to Max Weinbach, the author responsible for some recent leaks over at XDA, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is going to be packing some serious power. That starts with the storage and RAM which hit the ceiling for what we’ve seen on Android to date.

Apparently, the Galaxy S20 Ultra will offer up a base model with 128GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. From there, the storage can be upgraded to 256GB or 512GB with a microSD card slot still on board to boost the overall package by up to 1TB. Samsung could also be putting out one of the first smartphones with 16GB of RAM with the Ultra, a frankly crazy amount.

That will, of course, be paired with the Snapdragon 865 processor which will help power the 5G radios and 120Hz display too. With all of that power onboard, this should be one lightning-fast smartphone.

The S20 Ultra 5G is going to keep the SD Card slot. Support for up to 1TB.

It will also be available in 128GB/256GB/512GB and have a 12GB and 16GB RAM option.

    108MP main, 48MP 10x optical, 12MP ultra wide.

5000 mAh battery with 45W option fast charge. 0 to 100% in 74 min.

    — Max Weinbach (@MaxWinebach) January 13, 2020

Further, the Galaxy S20 Ultra might be the only S20 to include a 108MP camera as other variants have been tipped to only have a 12MP sensor. Flanking that main sensor would be a 48MP 10x optical zoom lens and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. Samsung is apparently also preparing a 100x “Space Zoom” option for the device.

To power all of these crazy specs, the Galaxy S20 Ultra will apparently have a 5,000 mAh battery. That battery will charge at 45W over USB-C too and go from 0-100% in just 74 minutes.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is looking like an absolute unit going into this new year and, more than likely, it will be the most heavily specced phone we’ll see for the next few months. Stay tuned, Samsung launches the S20 series on February 11th.

Only the Ultra has it. The s20 and the s20+ have the regular 12.

I believe there is pixel and engineering wizardry that goes into calculating MP count. It might be that some of the current phones that report 12MP have the same sensor in these 96 or 108 or w/e MP count cameras. I don't think they are truly 8x the detail and clarity of the 12mp cameras used in other flagships.

There has to be a good writeup somewhere about that.

This s20 camera sounds incredible. They have a new Single Take mode for the camera. You take one pic and it records for 10 seconds using all different camera modes (wide mode, live focus, ultra wide, etc) and then lets you pick which one you want. I imagine it'll eat space so you'll have to delete regularly but that's pretty badass.

so I really need to get a new phone soon because mine is fading badly and I'm tired of bitching about it

what I care most about is camera and battery life as I've said many times at this point

did some research and it seems these are the best options out there. Any other recs? I looked at reviews on multiple sites to gather these impressions

    - Huawei P30 Pro: not elite software but great battery life. Is it even available in US Verizon stores?
    - OnePlus 7T: good value
    - Samsung Galaxy S10+: sounds pretty good overall. Is it very big? Is the camera still good even though it lags behind Google? I am dainty & might not be able to handle something super big
    - Pixel 4XL: battery life sounds awful despite top tier camera. Pixel 4 battery life sounds even worse. I can't find a single review that says battery life is a plus on these and that's unacceptable for people who like to go outside for extended periods of time. This phone can't go backpacking or camping from what I can tell. Doesn't seem like the Pixel 3 is much better on the battery front

I really want to stay with an Android. But if I can't get the package I need then fuck it. Probably gonna go upgrade on Monday to something and may just need to play around with some options

Get the new Galaxy S20 Ultra or w/e if you don't have a budget. Whatever OnePlus (Like you said) has for sale will be a good value.

    Avoid Huawei

I think the P4XL battery is okay, but neither good nor bad.

With carrier agreements and sales, especially sales and promos. The exact same phone for someone on VZW might be $100-$400 different than it's cost for use on another carrier. The P4XL dropped to $499 for TMO users this week, but for me, the lowest offer was $699. The device is the exact same, but the promo agreements prevented me from buying the hardware from TMO w/o a plan.

so now in the process of setting up a Pixel 4 XL. Will take some time to learn its quirks because it seems to have some super sweet tricks and features

That March Feature Drop for the Pixel is nice.

FINALLY adding a stop/start command to Motion Sense for music too waaaaay too long for them to implement. Now if they can add a Motion Sense command for volume it will be complete for me.
