I have 4 that make my "own before I die list." Currently have an AP 15400 in white and a Rolex sub. Will inherit a Rolex Daytona 116500LN in white and an all gold 40mm day-date. Disclaimer: I tend to only like all steel or gold watches and have little to no interest in ever owning anything else. 1. Patek 5711. I'm currently #1 on a list and hopefully will have it in 2020. Spoiler 2. AP royal oak chrono blue Spoiler 3. AP gold jumbo or maybe an all gold AP with a black face if I end up with the blue chrono. Spoiler 4. A vintage omega speedmaster...not sure which yet but something like this Spoiler
Currently on lists for the jubilee Batman and Pepsi, but I'm kind of indifferent on those. Spoiler If forced to add a 5th to my list, I'd probably go with the Patek 5712. Spoiler
I’m not too hot on those rolexes, but we’re obviously not in the same ballpark when it comes to watch purchases. :)
I think I'll eventually own a Cartier Santos too. All steel, unique design, reasonably cheap, etc. Spoiler
I just view them as a timex weekender with nicer fit and finish. Like you mentioned, they can be found through retailers specializing in overstock for good prices. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one for $100-$150, but the prices they are asking are a bit much. They have lots of people drinking the kool-aid though. I couldn’t believe when they got an on-stage shout out at the oscars last year.
Great list. Love Patek & AP Royal Oak. Unfortunately, my wife sets my watch budget. All but the Speedy would result in my divorce & factored that into my selections... Stayed under $15k, as she’d lose her shit on anything more.
my list is def not, "watches i'll own at some point in my life" because i will never afford all of these but these would be top 5 for me: Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Polaris... I want the original '68, I think, and not the '18 tribute but I'd settle for that Spoiler Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Spoiler Rolex GMT Master-II Pepsi Spoiler A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Moon Phase Spoiler Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverseo Tribute Calendar Spoiler That'd be a nice versatile collection of sports and dress watches. No PP because I'm trying to be reasonable...
Ya I'm in a different life situation: single, no kids, and make enough money that I should be able to afford those over the next ~25-30 years. I will split the cost of the 5711 with 2 other people in my family and then rotate wearing it, which obviously helps. I can't say enough good things about the AP Royal Oak. It is a perfect steel watch, and I get more enjoyment wearing it than any other watch. The finishing on the bracelet is incredible, it reflects light unlike any watch I've ever seen, the dials are beautiful and change colors with different lighting (silver to white, blue to almost black, etc.), and it is super comfortable to wear. It'd be the one watch I would choose to wear every day for the rest of my life. If you ever get a chance to try one on or buy one, do it. You won't regret it.
This is a fucking dream come true. It feels so fucking incredible to purchase a brand new Rolex with box and papers. And yes, I can't believe it, but 9/28 is my birthday. View attachment 83439
I'm married, just older step-kids (1 year away from being empty nesters), and make enough to generally do whatever we want... sadly married trumps all. I fell in love with Ressence... specifically Type1 Squared & Type 3. They're a bit unconventional & untraditional, but would probably race to an AD, if I were to ever be "set free"
I'm not sure I'll be able to do a top five. I'll update. 1. Laco 1925 Munster Spoiler 2. Omega Speedmaster moonwatch professional Spoiler 3. IWC Schaffhausen - Big Pilot watch Spoiler 4. IWC Shaffhausen - Aquatimer Chronograph Spoiler this watch is actually the reason I have a citizen nighthawk. I loved the movie lucky number slevin and the nighthawk was as close to as I could find...you know without doing any actual research. 5. Chase Durer Special forces 1000xl - don't even care the burn notice watch. Spoiler
2 and 3 on my list and I’m kicking myself for not buying one of the two when i was in Australia earlier this year as the conversion/discount at Duty Free would have been Better than anything I could get stateside even taking the foreign transaction/duties into account
Going from a watch with 18mm thickness to 11.6 and 52mm lug to lug to 47, it's like I've never worn a watch before. The Deepsea was fine for short sleeves, but after I lost 60 pounds over the last while, it just got unmanagable.
I’m sure lugging the 5lbs Deap Sea around burned off at least 10,000 calories over the last year & contributed to your weight loss
It was the thickness that made it unwearable. My wrist went from 7.5" to just over 7. The lugs had no curve whatsoever either. It just sat completely flat on my wrist and looked idiotic.
For the same reason Jorts mentioned, it's a very unique piece within the Rolex catalog. You'll see a million Submariners before you see one of these. I think the case shape is much more elegant than the super case on the other sports models. It has a nice pop of color and is priced in a tier below the GMTs, Daytona or YMII etc. Also the bidirectional bezel is extremely satisfying to use.
I was going to do a top 5 wanted list, bit after opening and saving photos I realized they’re all the same watch. So here’s an example of one:
Much cheaper that the other watches posted here but wanted a bronze auto to see if I’d like a more high end bronze. Like this watch a good bit even though it’s very tall due to the 1000m resistance. I put the suede cream camo strap on but I’m still playing around with straps to see what I want to go with. Zelos hammerhead 2
Ironically, I saw 2 Yacht Masters this week, after mentioning they are rarely seen. I told both owners that my friend from the internet just purchased one & got funny looks.
Absolutely nothing to apologize for m8 Zelos makes some of the best looking watches from a microbrand that I've seen and some have fantastic specs They have some of the most beautiful dials on the market today
I'll go my Top 5 right now. I like mostly bigger watches and dive watches. 1. Grail watch - Patek 5270 Spoiler: 5270 2. Patek 5164A Aquanaut Travel Time Spoiler: Aquanaut 3. Omega Seamaster PO Chrono 9900 Spoiler: Seamaster 4. Grand Seiko SBGA231 Spoiler: Spring Drive Diver 5. Omega Speedmaster Racing Spoiler: White Speedy
Grand Seiko if for no other reason than they have perfected the inclusion of the power reserve indicator without completely fucking up the aesthetics of the dial. I love me some power reserve indicator.
Power reserve is the primary why I love the the OG Nomos Metro, despite it being one of their least Bauhaus designs
It’s a great watch for a big guy. If you live in a warmer climate and wear short sleeves most of the time it can also be practical.
It's so funny how the bigger of a watch cunt a person tries to be, the more they have to shit on Rolex. No one cares. You're not impressing anyone. Like I'm sorry, but Rolex makes some of the most beautiful designs on the market. Daytona is the GOAT chrono and Submariner is the GOAT diver. I'm sorry that you don't like their supply issues and markups, but it's supply and demand.
I don’t really know people who shit on Rolex. The sub is a standard first watch, but it’s still a really nice watch. Sites like Hodinkee fawn over Rolex and vintage Rolex all of the time too.
All of my (little) watch "knowledge" comes from YouTube. All of the Rolex hate comes from the comments. The vast majority of comments on every Rolex video are overwhelmingly negative.
tbh im just not a huge fan of Rolex's designs, I do like the Yacht Master though. However I'm also not able to afford a $10,000 watch so dont listen to me.
