In town for work for a single night. All my friends who live here are out of town. Early flight out tomorrow morning but decided to catch a UCB show at midnight anyway. Currently have just been going into a bunch of random bars for a drink. I don’t ever want to come back the week between Christmas and NYE, but this is a great city to be alone in.
Hey. Happy to help as best I can, but I don't know the Hilton properties too well as I haven't worked with them in almost 10 years. I believe most people like the Conrad which I think Hilton owns and is on points. It's location is a little sterile in Battery Park, but none of the hiltons are in some amazing location and NYC transit is easy af. Check out Conrad, but honestly I think all the Hiltons are similar and fine choices so go with your personal preference. I would stay in Manhattan unless you feel truly bored or done with it. Quoting some advice from a previous posts: Tons of cool museums and sight seeing besides the classics you're thinking of. A nice "run" is The Whitney/The Highline/Standard beer garden. Or Brooklyn Bridge/Brooklyn Museum/Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Or Eataly/Madison Sq park/Nomad Hotel Bar. Comedy Cellar is always great. Later the show you can manage the better as late shows always draw better surprise talent. UCB for improv is also a really fun idea if you like comedy. There are a few locations around the city. If you want a nice meal nearby try to get a res at Minetta Taven. Call them, do not book online, as you will have better luck getting one. Easier meal would be JG Melon which has arguably the best burger in the city right nearby. My friend just opened Japan Village in Brooklyn. It is literally a giant market full of restaurants and stores from Japan. Could be fun and it's pretty new. I kind of just thought of this idea and I like it. You will get a lot of differing opinions on where and what to do from everyone cause well thats nyc and everyone is horny about knowing the best things. Try to just walk around downtown and take it easy. Most people plan too much and don't get to just take in the west village or soho in casual way that's the real blessing of nyc. Lmk if you have any questions.
Thanks for the tips. We actually stayed at that Conrad about 7 years ago. It was great. I ended up booking the Millennium Hilton right next to the WTC. It had favorable points, good reviews and looks close to all the major transit lines. I'll check out that Japan Village place and your dining recs for the Village.
I'd like to admit a mistake. F&F was garbage on their soft opening. What I had Friday night was unreal. I'll probably go at halftime too
yeah it keeps getting better. They’re using some new flour from some bespoke farm to table handmade craft farm in Oregon now or some shit It’s my favorite in the city right now
So between Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights/DUMBO, what's the better area to spend a few hrs walking around in? I want to book a 2 hr walking food tour in Brooklyn and the group I've settled on (http://raystours.nyc) offers those 2 options LOL JK, they don't have anything available the weekend we're going Question still stands
Walk from BK Heights down to Redhook. Get a drink at Gran Electrica, maybe get a bagel at Court Street Bagels, slice at F&F, several beers at Other Half and then BBQ at Hometown
Just mapped it out and it looks pretty straight forward. So this is the better option over booking a guided tour in Williamsburg that would take us to Northside Bakery, Best Pizza, Momofuku Milk Bar, Michel Cluizel Chocolate, Odd Fellows Ice Cream, & Mable's Smokehouse?
I'm extremely biased. Williamsburg is waaaay trendier so that might be better sightseeing but I love my area. Carroll Gardens is an old Italian spot so it has nice vibe IMO
Fair enough. I'd rather do our own thing since we wouldn't have any time restrictions. But we really enjoy the mini history lessons you get on the area from the tours. I'll enjoy it either way.
Marco Polo, restaurant in CG, is still very much involved in organized crime. Two years ago it was shot up by another family. Owner tried to blame it on kids from the Redhook project and the cops were like "naw we know what you're doing" There's some history!
Bamonte's in wburg has that going down too. I used to live right next to it and I'd walk over on a random night to make a to go order and some Italian dude in a suit would just be outside and say "not open tonight" and I'd walk away with no questions like the upstanding pussy that I am.
To me, Carroll Gardens/Red Hook >> Williamsburg these days for food and walking tours.. And the neighborhoods actually have history and weren't complete shitholes for their entire existence until the 2000s so the older buildings are much nicer.
Will probably end up spending time in both areas. So I'm guessing getting Hamilton tickets for 2 weeks from now is largely impossible?
I have a reservation for 2 with standard wine pairing for Eleven Madison Park on Saturday, February 15th at 8:45 PM if anybody wants to buy it for face value. Couldn’t get work off the night before to get a NYC weekend in.
did you call and ask about getting out of it? find most these places are flexible, especially this far out, at a minimum they'd offer to move it to another weekend I bet
Yeah everything is already paid for through Tock. If any of you NYC bros wanted this (desirable reservation at the #2 restaurant in the world on a desirable weekend at a desirable time) reservation, it would be very easy to transfer in Tock and there would be no chance of fraud, etc. The downside is it’s $1110 lol. Worst case scenario is we’ll fly up Saturday morning and fly back down Sunday evening and do the damn thing.
Just curious but what kind of work are you in where you can afford a $1000 dinner but don't have the flexibility to take a day off a month in advance?
Doctor; I’m on call that Friday until 11 PM and none of my partners want to trade into a Valentine’s Day shift (understandably)
Any good wine bar recommendations for Manhattan? Preferably West Village area, but I'll take all top tier wine bar recs.
Does comedy cellar send email confirmations for reservations? I know I made the reservation but they only sent me an email of upcoming events.
I got the same thing, so I'm thinking no. Made a reservation for 7pm Friday, but might skip it and do standby for a later show.
Any breakfast or brunch recommendations in lower Manhattan? Nothing past Midtown. Someone recommended Essex to us. Don't know if that's good or if there's something much better.
Comedy Cellar does send email confirmations for reservations. Brunch: Sadelles, Union Square Cafe, Russ and Daughters, Root and Bone, Prune, Clinton Street Baking Co.
Yes, those are all better than Essex imo. Essex is an all you can drink type place. The food is good.
Me and some friends made an 8-bit game about the frustrations of walking in NYC. https://www.thesnidewalk.com/
have an extra ticket to Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers May 16 at MSG. Sec 101 Row 6 for $50 if anyone is interested
