I’ve aged out of the Innisfree/Tin Roof crowd and only go to Moe’s or Jack Brown’s now. More eating than drinking. Didn’t realize it was that bad now.
I go to Oasis and Lou’s on occasion. I’ll also day drink on the deck at Moe’s sometimes. It’s okay for a group of like 3-4. Every Memorial Day Sunday a couple of my buddies and I have a tradition of day drinking in Lakeview starting at ~11 and bar hop. It’s a super slow day, so it’s actually a lot of fun. Once we had oasis to ourselves and the bartendress gave herself a prison tattoo in front of us.
Yeah Lakeview fucking sucks these days...Seeds coffee shop closed too. I don’t think Oasis will be around much longer. I’ve also heard that once the lease is up St. Vincent’s is flattening 5 and Chris z’s to build a parking lot (also built on rape mountain). They’re adding a purple onion in the old on tap which should really help class the place up. As long as that ABC store is there, the district will attract vagrants. Also, that girl getting abducted and found in a shallow Hueytown grave is beyond the pale and obviously an enormous black eye for the entire district (and city). Edit: I don’t know what I’m talking about.
I attended my first neighborhood meeting last Tuesday and (Surprise) our police force is an absolute joke. Until we incentivize and recruit quality candidates, the criminals will operate unobstructed. I heard a radio commercial a few months ago offering police officers signing bonuses to relocate to Memphis. My BIL is a police officer and moved from NOLA (Claim to fame in the department, 9TH ward beat cop, was he’d caught every single perp that fled on foot) to a Seattle suburb for a signing bonus. I almost guarantee it’s more effect to poach existing officers from surrounding cities than pay to put them through whatever bullshit academy program we’re running. I’d bet most of the cadets we train end up quitting within 2 years anyway. At least when you poach talent you’re increasing your probability of hiring a career law enforcement officer.
My understanding is that Birmingham PD is seen as a place to get quality experience. Then after you do your time there you can upgrade to a more lowkey suburb job somewhere OTM. In general, this country needs to make it tougher to be a police officer. Also need to pay them more and train them a lot better though.
Strongly disagree with DriveByBBQ 's assessment of our police force. Birmingham police department has a stronger and more positive relationship with its community members than I have seen in any major city. Pretty crazy to think that a city that barely survived the civil rights movement has had no major conflict in today's Black Lives Matter/Blue Lives Matter political climate. BPD is certainly underfunded and understaffed, but they employ good people who care about our community. I will stan for BPD all day. Fuck Hoover and Homewood PD.
Very seldom I make it out for a drink anymore, but when I did Oasis was my top spot. Great crowd and great vibe in there. Can you still smoke cigarettes in that back room? Do they still play live phish and GD back there? Does old white guy that works the door still wear a dashiki every night?
Not to denigrate the dead, but I heard that was about heroin. Obviously it still sucks but I found some comfort knowing it wasn’t a random drunk girl kidnapping.
I have not kept up with the story, but when I heard about it I assumed that they sold her heroin (more likely ketamine + fentanyl), she overdosed, and they realized they were in trouble and tried to ditch the body. Is that about what happened, or was there a more violent element to it?
People don't realize how much heroin is bought and sold in Lakeview. It is that issue that keeps the vagrants in the neighborhood more than anything else. They all congregate on that bench by Hattie B's around dinner time and the dealers drive over and meet them there. Other times they set up shop at the top of that hill in the alley between Jack Browns and the church. It is a one way but they can just walk down the back side toward Southtown if cops were to roll up.
Sorry dudes, my pessimism isn’t productive and I need to snap outta that shit. I’ve just been taking it on the nose the last couple of years (and recent weeks) in the larceny department and I’m fed up/venting.
That would be my guess. She was on the website of a rehabilitation facility so she likely relapsed. She left willingly with the guys. I assumed she overdosed and they panicked and hid the body. It was obviously a cowardly and heinous thing, but to suggest that it was some kind of random abduction is disingenuous.
That’s my best guess as well. The only issue is that she was sending her friend coherent texts saying she didn’t know where she was and might be in trouble. I have zero experience with people on heroin so I don’t know if it’s possible to be “normal” while high.
From what I understand, that part of the story may have been fabricated. Apparently, the surveillance video from the Tin Roof doesn't show her leaving with two black guys as her co-worker suggested.
I have been a couple times in the last few months, back room has been dead and not even attended some times. Door guy is unchanged. He still lets me in for free because I bought their membership card for 40 bucks in like 2012.
Has anyone eaten at Bobby Carl’s table? I have a gift card for there and seeing if tmb has any thoughts on the place.
I have eaten there several times. It's a strong meat and three at lunch and the dinner menu is solid (albeit a little steep for what it is).
Yep Has to be the one on Bankhead, Pelham, Bessemer, and like Oneonta or some bullshit. Get there early too.
I’ve tried to be patient and open-minded with it, but, 3 man front is BAD. I think Cole brings a pretty cool dimension to it with his X’s and O’s part of it and overall football IQ, etc. However, Landrum and Suttles grate on my nerves. It’s like they paired the two dorks from high school(Landrum and Aaron) with the guy(Cole) that used to stuff them in lockers and the chemistry just doesn’t work for me. Just replay the round table in their slot. /rant
I'm not sure. I think you can but then the Star ID goes into effect in Oct(?). My mom had an expired AL license and she went to the Center Point office and they said they could do it but no Star ID. I told her just to wait and go with me to Bankhead and get a Star. I did an out of state transfer and had no problems. Here is a link to all the shit you need to get a Star ID. https://www.alea.gov/dps/driver-license/document-requirements-and-fees
You can get an appointment. I'm going to be going through Tuscaloosa on Friday anyway, so scheduled one then.
Disagree with your solution here. Cole needs better support. Those shows during the season where he is out of town and it’s just Landrum and Suttles are awful. I actually don’t mind Landrum as the straight man in their show but you need another strong personality and Suttles ain’t it.
I wouldn’t mind that. I’m in the car most of the day and I would love a better option than these guys. I might have to switch it over to XM or something. The round table is the GOAT sports talk show for me but I can’t listen to Suttles and Landrum giggle about something they think Saybear said is funny. Idk. Sorry for the rant haha
https://www.alea.gov/dps/driver-license/star-id/star-id-document-list To verify your SSN and principal place of residence, apparently
That's pretty much where I land. I don't mind Cole and Landrum. Landrum especially has grown on me and Cole is a real talent. But Suttles is terrible. His number one "asset" is being an Alabama insider and he doesn't seem to have any really good sources. If he does, they are dishing their info to a half dozen other people and it ends up on the boards pretty quick. but my main issue with Suttles is he just seems like a huge wet blanket and lacks any creativity or humor.
You can use it or a passport to board domestic flights, but it's kind of a pain to carry your passport for domestic flights. I think it's only a matter of time before all ID's are Star ID's, though.
Headed to Bham for Easter weekend with four friends. We already have our airbnb booked and I've basically been following the subreddit as far as food/bars/museums go. Do you guys have any suggestions that I could have missed?
