We typically do a group trip somewhere reasonable for the entire group (Two years ago we went to Bloomington,IND). Two of my friends just got back from a wedding in the area and raved about the bar scene. We are staying in Crestline Park. About a week ago I went on a bit a google map frenzy and mapped out a ton of places. Here are a few places that stuck out to me. Bars: The Collins Bar Moon Shine at Elyton The Atomic Lounge Carriage's Public House Brat Brot Restaurants: Shu Shop Iron City Pizza Cayo Coco Rodnay Scott's BBQ Misc: Avondale Park Bham Museum of Art Negro League Museum
Good list. I’d sub in Post Office Pies or Tortugas (Southside location) for pizza. Saws juke joint is a good bar and bbq place in Crestline Park. I would also add Parkside Bar to the bar list. We’ve got a decent brewery scene, I’d definitely make a stop at Trim Tab and try some IPAs. Ghost Train and Cahaba also very good. Avondale Brewery has decent beers but the set up is what makes it. If there is a concert there that weekend might be worth attending and using that as a night to hit up the Avondale area spots. Atomic is unique and awesome and if it’s your first time hitting up Bham definitely worth a stop. If y’all are looking for breakfast spots Big Bad Breakfast is great as a Demetris bbq, both in Homewood. Woodlawn Cycle Cafe is fantastic and relatively close to Crestline Park.
Also, when Cole is out of studio and it’s a combination of Pat, Landrum, Suttles, and Saybear, it’s geek fest that’s almost unbearable to listen to.
I keep forgetting about the front page list. It’s several years dated now. If I ever had any time I would make something better. I’ll try to get a baseline this week then let y’all fill in what I forget.
If y’all want to eat at Highlands you’ll need to book a reservation 30 days out. Just won the James Beard. Other good nice spots are Oceans, Bottega, and Hot and Hot Fish Club. I’ll defer to wes tegg on other recs.
I like these: Ollie Irene Automatic Chez Fon Fon Bottega Ovenbird Hot & Hot and yeah, Highlands is the super star but that takes a bit more planning.
subreddit sucks for the most part. Depends on what part of town and how fancy you are looking to go. Bham is awesome for a weekend and had something for everyone.
Gianmarcos is my favorite but it’s off the beaten path on a weekend in town. I would recommend Bottega Cafe for a nice dinner.
Who in the fuck is the guy on early Saturday mornings? Probably some national guy but he's definitely a whiny little bitch.
You've got a pretty good list already but just wanted to point out that is also the Barons opening weekend. And Otey's is just ok - no matter what wes tegg tells you.
to this, i'd add -mom's basement (bar) -parkside (bar) -saw's juke joint (bbq restaurant right in crestline park and significantly better than rodney scott's imo) -trattoria (far better pizza and restaurant overall than iron city) and subtract -moonshine at elyton -iron city pizza
Otey’s sucks until you go there for years and realize that it’s the best bar in the universe. It’s like Stockholm syndrome.
That would be Joe Hunk and Saybear. JOX game day. It sucks too. I’m telling you..the round table carries that station bc the other talent is complete shit
it's just kind of a bham staple in terms of bars. it's a way to go to a "fun" bar with lots of young people without stepping into lakeview. i can tell you, tho, that they're pretty concerned with the success of mom's. parkside has been complacent for years and i think just assumed they'd always be everyone's default spot without really doing anything to retain that.
I’m cooking, but we did dessert at Bottega Cafe and it was dead last year. Maybe people afraid to go somewhere without a reservation?
Maybe but I believe that it's a national guy. He doesn't cover local stuff. It's also mainly all pro sports talk. This guy is on at 6am Saturday mornings.
thanks. i will work 31 onto the commute this afternoon just to swing in there. i'm sure they will be gone though.
Check Crestline Pig. Clairmont Pig only had two packs left yesterday but the nice stuff doesn’t fly off the shelves as fast at Crestline
Does anyone know of any houses that could be available for a short-term rental during a remodel? we're going to need 4 months. The only thing I really care about is it being in a good location (relatively close to where we live now) and a fenced-in backyard for my dogs.
does anybody have a yard guy they recommend? i would rather not get into a monthly contract with a landscaping company. I would rather just have someone I can text to come when needed. My old guy completely ghosted me. (I guess that comes with the territory)
Word. My aunt owns a few rentals in Birmingham and does the books for a guy that owns like 100. I just sent her a text and she's checking
They didn't have anything open but she said she'll let me know before anyone else if something comes open
This placed is rumored to be the new tenant at the old V Richards / Whistling table location. Looks pretty good. https://www.redorwhitewine.com/
Anyone been to the Autobahn indoor go kart place in Bessemer? I have a work function there Saturday that isn’t mandatory so I need to know if it’s worth a day of my weekend to go.
