Decided to start this while I eat lunch before heading out and meeting some friends. That was a bad decision
This is really good, and terrifying. About a 1/3rd through and just now realized this is the book Outbreak is based on.
I read this back in the day. My step dad is an epidemiologist and so there's always terrifying outbreak fiction around. I recall liking it.
Im burning through this like ebola burns through dem guts. I’ll prob finish this afternoon. This week is so slow work wise so I can plow through. Im loving the book but i dont have much to say discussion wise.
Started last night. Pretty terrifying open. Imagine "recovering" from Marburg and then your testicles just up and start rotting away.
Just read the first chapter. Just kept thinking of all the people that were exposed. Imagine sitting on a tiny plane and this guy rolls in and sits next to you with red eyes, a drooping face, and throwing up all kinds of black liquid.
Finished 8/10 Spoiler The terrifying thing is the US got lucky AF that the new Asian strain snuck into the country and it wasn’t as contagious as the two African strains. Also lmao at the military not getting hazard pay because the government deemed being inside the space suits a safe working environment.
Through part 1 Spoiler I hope they go back to the cave and find the origin of the virus from the two cases
Finished. Good read. Enjoyed the first part the most, I've never felt horrified by a book like that before. Spoiler briefly searched to see if there have been any more recent findings about the origins in Kitum cave and found this https://www.realclearscience.com/blog/2014/10/the_incredible_cave_where_marburg_may_dwell.html
I guess I never understood exactly how awful and terrifying Ebola was. Holy shit, the continued talk about the pucker factor is absolutely warranted. Also somewhat understand the psychological need to hide the fact that you might have been exposed despite the consequences. All these military and medical professionals possibly being exposed just keeping their mouth shut.
Finished the other night, 7.5/10 Spoiler: Thoughts Enjoyed it mostly and agree with the take above in that I had no idea that Ebola was that nasty. I will say that I thought he tried to "sell the terror" too much. Like when the lab intern first comes in contact with the monkey meat and it is ominously pointed out, as he leaves for vacation in WV, how long it takes for Ebola symptoms to start showing (even though we learn later that he was fine). I also think he could have cut out some of the stuff from his time in Africa. Glad we read it though, thanks to those who suggested it. Also had no idea that Douglas Preston was his brother.
