4 straight wins have ND back to .500 in conference play with @UVA , @Duke and UNC up next. Taking 2 of 3 is desirable though 1-3 won't doom them. Considering the amount of upsets happening left and right, and ND having a NET ranking in the 50's, the Irish can play their way into the tourney.

    Gotta keep it going.

as CTownND said a few days ago, if we could have pulled out louisville, or fsu, or syracuse (or all of the above), or any of the other 5 point games, we would be in such a good position for the tournament. the rest of the week is *gigantic*, but tonight was key

Yes, agreed. A win against Duke or FSU along with holding serve against the remaining ACC schedule should still do it.

Feel like we might be playing for the tournament on Tuesday. With a win vs. UVa, we'd have a better overall record, the same ACC record, very similar advanced rankings (KenPom is us at 55 vs. UVa at 52) and a win over them may give us the nod for a 5th ACC bid over them.

I see two losses on our schedule, a handful of wins, and a couple toss ups. Think 5-3 is the bogey down the stretch to make the tourney, but we also need to beat one of Duke/FSU/UVa or we'll essentially have no quality wins.

Nuggets From The Road: Fighting Irish Targets In Georgia
*** I stopped in at a couple of high schools in the Atlanta area last week, a pair of visits that defensive coordinator Clark Lea also made during the January contact period. Two of the most coveted defensive prospects in the country are cornerback

    Jordan Hancock
    and linebacker
    Barrett Carter
at Suwannee (Ga.) North Gwinnett, and the Irish have been targeting the class of 2021 four-star tandem, although Notre Dame has a lot more work to do here.
*** In speaking with them separately, one of the first questions I asked them was which schools they'd like to get visit this spring, and both mentioned Notre Dame on their short list for visits. Here's what Hancock had to say about what he'd want to do at Notre Dame: "Learn how their defense works and break down film with Coach [Terry] Joseph." He added that he likes the "brotherhood and culture" at Notre Dame. After speaking with Hancock, the vibe I got was that Clemson and Ohio State lead, but Notre Dame can make a big impact in his recruitment if he gets on campus this spring.

*** Carter, who ranks as the nation's top inside linebacker recruit, is announcing a top schools list Wednesday. He holds 47 scholarship offers according to his Rivals profile, so I'd imagine this cut will be a top 10, and I believe Notre Dame will make the cut. If it's a top five, I don't believe the Irish will as he hasn't visited campus yet. He was impressed with his conversation with Lea last month and they keep in contact: "Jordan and I both saw him. It was good. He told us that they really want us and we need to visit. It was really good to talk to him. He seems like a really cool, down to earth guy. That's huge."

*** I also stopped in at Alpharetta (Ga.) High, which is home to 2021 safety target

    Jaden Slocum
. Lea visited this school while in the Atlanta area as well but the timing wasn't great so he didn't get to see Slocum or interim head coach/defensive coordinator Jim Rowell. However, following Lea's visit to the high school, he got to chat with Slocum's mother: "I know my mom had a talk with Coach Lea the day that he came by," Slocum said. "They spoke on the phone, and she thought the conversation went well. They talked for about a half an hour." Slocum visited Wake Forest in January and will visit Stanford in March. Look for Notre Dame to be a strong possibility for an official visit in the spring or summer.
*** The 6-2, 185-pounder has impressed Rowell both on and off the field. Here's what Rowell had to say about his rangy safety: "He's a leader, and I'm not just saying that. He really is a leader on the field. He wants to know what every position is doing, and I've been lucky to have him the last couple years. He checks all of the boxes physically. What I like most about him is his academics; it's that important to him and his family."

*** Added Rowell: "He's in charge of our secondary in the back end. He has to know the entire defense and be familiar with all of our coverages and pressures. We have a complex system, so he's ahead of the curve getting ready for college."

*** From my conversations with Slocum and from what I heard from Rowell, it's clear that Slocum would be a great academic fit at Notre Dame: "Incredible grades, his test scores are perfect," said Rowell. "He's going to be fine academically, and he's actually going to bring a lot to the school he goes to. It's helped given him this many options because of his grades. He's just a great kid and his family is great too."

Robert Steeples An Option As Cornerbacks Coach
*** We're fully expecting Penn State analyst John McNulty to be named Notre Dame tight ends coach, and the announcement should be made this week. In terms of the cornerbacks coach hire, Irish Illustrated reported that St. Louis (Mo.) De Smet High School Robert Steeples is a person of interest in the search, and I can confirm that after speaking to sources close to the De Smet program.

*** I'm told that the contact between Steeples and Notre Dame started in the past week ago and there is "definitely some interest" but the extent of it isn't too known right now. Pete Sampson of The Athletic reported that Brian Kelly made an offer to a potential new cornerbacks coach, and that definitely isn't Steeples at this point as he hasn't interviewed for the position yet. He's only spoken to Notre Dame on the phone, but Steeples hopes to get on campus this week and interview for the opening, a source tells me.

*** Steeples has had interest from college coaches in the past couple years but nothing at the level of Notre Dame. Steeples would be a a big time recruiter for the Irish, especially in St. Louis with all of the faith based schools in the area. As an assistant coach, he could have free reign to recruit De Smet, an undefeated state title team in 2019, and a source close to elite 2021 cornerback

    Jakailin Johnson
tells me that Steeples landing at ND would "change a lot in Jakailin's recruitment." If Steeples were to be hired by Notre Dame and Johnson's academics check out, he'd be a near lock to land in South Bend.

    What Happened With David Abiara?
*** Following his unofficial visit to Notre Dame, there was plenty of buzz that Mansfield (Texas) Legacy defensive end

    David Abiara
would commit to the Fighting Irish. It turned out that he was just announcing a top seven, and Alabama, Baylor, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M made the cut for him. However, the buzz that he'd be committing to Notre Dame was legit; this wasn't a situation where there was a lot of hype created for no reason.
*** Abiara gave really, really strong indication to the staff Tuesday that he'd be announcing a public commitment to Notre Dame, but he backed out of that a day or two later. He tweeted about making a "big announcement on Friday" so he announced the top seven rather than making a commitment. A source on the Oklahoma side of things informed me that part of his decision to delay a commitment was because of the Sooners' staff worked to slow down Abiara's recruiting process.

*** I put in a FutureCast pick last Tuesday for Abiara to commit to Notre Dame, and that was followed up by five other Rivals recruiting writers for Irish predictions as well. I'm keeping my FutureCast on Notre Dame here until further notice. I still feel good about it, as I'm told that Abiara's mother was really blown away by their Notre Dame visit Feb. 1. I'm expecting Abiara to take an official visit to Notre Dame this spring, likely early April, and the Irish will likely close the deal at that point.

Notre Dame Identifying 2021 Rover Targets
*** Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea has offered a few new prospects in the past few weeks, and a couple have brought up that they were offered at rover. Dallas (Ga.) Paulding County's

    Smael Mondon
will be a tough pull out of Georgia, but Lea's visit to the school made a strong impact, as he spent about an hour talking to the coaching staff there and getting to know them. Click here for my story over the weekend on Mondon.
    *** Arlington (Texas) Martin linebacker

    Morice Blackwell
told me that Lea came by his high school in January and received an offer from the Irish the following day. I asked Blackwell, a 6-1, 195-pounder, what position Notre Dame talked about when offering him, but he told me he didn't know, but in watching his tape, he really seems to fit the rover position.
*** Lea got on the phone with McMurray (Pa.) Peters Township's

    Donovan McMillon
, who is listed as a safety, but the 6-2, 185-pounder tells me that the Irish offered him as a rover. Here's what the fast-rising prospect told me about the offer from Notre Dame: "I was talking to Coach Lezynski over text about if I could see Notre Dame as my future, and I told him 100 percent. We were talking about the position they see me at, their rover position, where you can blitz and get the quarterback but also play man to man coverage. About five minutes after that Coach Lea texted me and asked if we could talk ... He hit me with the offer, and I was astonished. I started shaking; I was super excited."

I think we all assume that crappy QB development is unique to BK. Feldman did an article on the 2013 QB class. That year we got Zaire who was the 13th ranked on 247.

I'll save you the time, 11 of the QBs ranked ahead of him stunk and then you had JT Barrett

2012 is a pile of shit outside of Winston

2014 is a pile of shit outside of Watson, we did well with Kizer considering his ranking.

2015 isn't as kind but Barnett ended up even worse than Wimbush.

Clemson and OSU are the schools that come to mind that you don't see misses. Hunter Johnson perhaps being an exception, but you get a pass when you surround that with Watson and Lawrence

The new recruiting article by Sampson is quite good, but also pretty outrageous.

They make the claim that you can’t knock Kelly for not being involved enough in recruiting. And then talk about how he needs to be involved in different ways - which in turn means more involved.

Yup. I think Pete is trying to make the claim that it isn’t hard work that was lacking. It was operational efficiency. Fine. It’s semantics to some degree. Bigger picture is it needs to improve because the operation isn’t running as optimally as it could be.

Granted, can we ever get into the top 5 year in and year out at ND given some of the restraints in place? Probably not. But #6 is also a far cry from #16 based on the recruits called out in the article that would have gotten us there if we had landed them. ND is a totally different program if we did that on a regular basis.

I just don't understand why it is now, a decade into his tenure, that Kelly is coming to grips with the need for elite level recruiting. Clemson, Alabama and OSU having been running circles around him for years, yet this year is the serendipitous moment? Color me skeptical.

Kelly’s biggest flaw coming into ND was that he never coached big time football. He never saw major recruiting. He entirely lived for 20 years with developing kids

I think that Bama game did change him, the Clemson game changed him more. It’s fair that coaches can evolve over time in approach

He got scared off by most of the elite talent earlier on being buttheads and fell into the trap of being content rounding up the easy mid to low end four stars. He's just now realizing that there are still elite players out there that with a little effort will come and can hack it at ND.

I think Kelly made a legit effort to recruit with the big boys early on (the Tuitt/Lynch era). Then he got burned by some character risks, probably got yelled at for it and was simultaneously trying to leave for the NFL so he just figured he could ride what he had for a year or two until he landed an NFL job. He sold the easy road as the only option to the beat writers and they bought it because they know it's catnip to the "ND is just DIFFERENT" crowd they pander to and everyone was complacent until 4 years of lazy recruiting smacked them in the face against Clemson.

I think part of it is his delegating responsibility. When he was micro-managing the program, he didn't have time to recruit, plus he probably thought ND recruited itself. Now he gets his players better and wants to be a bigger part of it. This is all on him just not getting it until now.

Singer posted this article on Rucci today

College coaches flew through Lititz (Pa.) Warwick High, home of class of 2021 offensive tackle

    Nolan Rucci
, during the January contact period.
It wasn't just assistant coaches coming by to show their love to the 6-8, 287-pound Rivals100 prospect either. Several big time head coaches were by as well.

"It was busy, but it's just really cool," Rucci explained. "It's not every day that you get to have all of these head coaches at your school. It really says a lot about how much commitment they're showing towards me, and I'm super excited to keep on developing those relationship."

SPECIAL OFFER: Receive $49.50 gift card to Rivals Fan Shop with new annual subscription

Nolan Rucci will visit Notre Dame in January. (Ryan Snyder/Blue White Illustrated)
Notre Dame offensive line coach Jeff Quinn visited Rucci's school right when the contact period began, and Irish head coach Brian Kelly made a stop at Warwick as well.

Rucci's relationship with Notre Dame has gotten closer over the past few months has grown and it will get even better in the near future as he'll get on campus next month.

"It's going really well," Rucci said. "I was just talking with

    Blake [Fisher]
the other day, and we're coming up for that March 20 date when they're having all of their offensive line guys in. I'm super excited for that, and I'm just talking to Coach Quinn.
"My next step is getting to know Notre Dame more -- watching Coach Quinn interact with his guys. I want to know the guys on the team more and getting their perspective."

Notre Dame has been recruiting Rucci for well over a year and extended him a scholarship last January during a campus visit. He hasn't been back to South Bend since that visit, but he's regularly keeping in contact with Quinn and building their connection.

"Now that we've gotten to know each other, we're starting to talk about the nitty gritty things -- visit dates, technique, how he coaches his guys," noted Rucci. "It's been really cool getting to know him and developing a relationship with him and also meeting Coach Kelly, which was my first time seeing him since I visited there with my older brother [

    Hayden Rucci
] during his recruiting process. It's just been really cool."
Rucci keeps in touch with Quinn about once or twice a week, and he hears from the aforementioned Blake Fisher just as much, if not more.

"Blake is a great recruiter, that's for sure," Rucci said. "He's a very charismatic guy; I talk to him a lot. He's kind of put together this whole weekend where we're getting together a bunch of the top O-linemen in the 2021 class, which is a very impressive feat by him. I'm looking forward to getting to know him more, especially when we get around each other and the other guys."

As of now, the only visit Rucci has set up for this spring is his trip to Notre Dame. He plans to take official visits in the spring and would like to see some schools down south and out west as well.

"I'd like to make a [commitment] by the end of spring and would probably announce it in the spring sometime," Rucci stated.

i really like that we are on his only setup visit as of now and he can still return for the OV
