It’s fucking terrible. I caught it, probably on a jail visit or meeting at the office with one of my addict clients, and it wrecked my shit hard. Was out of work for a month, liver almost shutdown, started going jaundiced, spent everyday on the couch in agony cold-sweating out of every pore on the verge of vomiting. Missed my best friend’s wedding. Three years later and I still have track marks from the daily labs they ran to monitor my viral loads. Think I woulda been hospitalized if not for mj maintaining my appetite. HOWEVER, although poorly understood in the medical literature and varying widely from individual-to-individual, I’m pretty sure it’s not a chronic condition. Once your body fights it off, that’s that. It’s the same virus that causes mono.
It’s also exceedingly rare outside the HIV/intravenous addict community. My doc said I was one of like 6 people they could find who was otherwise healthy that got it.
HOT TAKE: vernon has grown on me, and I listen to more and more of the mismatch. Group chat is hit or miss for me bc I’m too old for some of the shit they talk about.
I’m not in the car all day like I used to be but Colin was fun to listen to in the mornings in the mid to late 2000s.
Bill Simmons talking about Higher Learning today on Rewatchables...should be good for some unintentional comedy
When I think of a rewatcheable movie, Higher Learning doesnt really come to mind. I saw it when it came out when I was 15 and it was heavy enough on the first viewing. Usually not something I want to repeat. Probably will skip this episode.
I'm curious to see where they take the whole "Flawed Rewatchable" thing...different categories and whatnot
His voice is almost too "sports talky" and it took me awhile to get used to it and take him seriously.
Vernon has the best radio voice on the site, next up would prolly be Russillo or John Gonzales. He takes a conversational approach though, Heat Check tends to be way more gimmicky.
Kinda funny though—after a decade of complaining about Bill’s high pitched whine, he finally gives his listeners a sexy baritone and they...complain some more.
We aren’t. Regardless of how you feel about his content, you’re either deaf or lying if you don’t think he has a good voice for radio. He’s the only career broadcaster in the company.
Strongly disagree that his voice is pleasant to listen to. This could be a regional thing, depending on the accents we’re used to hearing.
I like Verno. Have been listening to him make local radio hits in Alabama with our local shows for years. But he has an atypical radio voice and it can take some time to get used to.
Accent? I’m talking about his pitch, tone, timbre, cadence, etc... I can find almost any accent pleasant to listen to if the voice behind it is a deep, smooth, rich baritone. That said, Vernon doesn’t have much of an accent, he’s like 2 or 3 degrees removed from a neutral mid-westerner. In what way do you think it’s atypical? You don’t think he’s closer to the classical broadcaster than guys like Simmons, KOC, Tjarks, Ryan, etc...?
I wish I could do an impression for you. He just has a unique voice. It's not like you are listening to Tom Brokaw when he comes on.
Word. Obviously all this is subjective to a degree. I always thought Tom sounded like he was trying to grunt out a fat log. He’s also not a radio guy—TV journalists often get jobs based more on their looks than their voice.
Higher Learning episode wasn't bad. Bill got dunked on by not recognizing Lattimer from The Program as one of the skinheads. Van Lathan wants a Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World episode
Also, how does Bill not recognize the roided out guy? He's seen Any Given Sunday a dozen times as well. It's not like he blends in.
it was actually kinda funny...Van was talking about the skinheads and brings up Lattimer and Bill was all "That's not him, trust me I looked...This is the Rewatchables, I always look" Van was all are you sure? Bill was shocked they would question it Van was sure Bill was wrong and while Bill is talking, Van pulled up the IMDB and confirmed they were the same guy
The movie came out like 3 years after The Program. Speaking of, I hope thye do The Program at some point.
Bill is the same guy who thought Jon Hamm’s overtly satirical Boston accent in The Town was an honest attempt at mimicking it.
same here. My NBA listening is basically the Lowe Post and the mismatch...they tend to have the best grip on what's actually going on bc they watch the most games. Group Chat is Chris Ryan and Verrier doing a NBA hipster impersonation and Heat Check is hard to for me to listen to
Dunc’d On seems to be releasing fewer episodes since Nate started doing his side pod w Hollinger. I really like Duncan and Leroux, they became my go-to when Grantland ended and ESPN neutered Lowe Post. Lately Lowe has picked up a little. I still enjoy Dunc’d, and the Duncan/Hollinger pod is ok, but I feel like Nate has been drifting further away from the hardcore objectivity and no-nonsense coverage that drew me to him in the first place. He’s still better than the hot-take crowd, but I feel like he’s become way more biased, arrogant, and judgmental in his evaluations. He’s also kind of a dick to Danny at times.
Russillo is having Craig Kilborn on this week. That's awesome. He's my favorite Sportscenter anchor of all-time.
Hopefully the interview is better than the one he did on Simmons' pod a few years back. That was horrid.
