You should still check out Tacos Chiwas. Don't go at night or just order it on an app. Not the best part of town.
I’ve heard Barrio is amazing. Last time I was there I was so drunk I had a hard time ordering and don’t remember the food but everybody I went with said it was amazing. Only thing I remember was the over 55 crowd and the shitty neighborhood.
Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers, there’s a bunch around the valley. The Attic is my favorite spot for Sunday football. Get the grilled wings.
The Bar is also a good spot. You can get two dozen wings, fries, onion rings, and 5 beers/wells for $50 as long as you are with someone. Small place with a good TV set up.
That’s a good spot too. If you’re gonna be over there all day check out Little Woody. I think it opens at 4. Definitely not a sports bar though.
Fox Restaurants (owner of Culinary and Olive & Ivy) was sold to Cheesecake Factory. I’d imagine the Fox concepts will start going nationwide soon.
Considering a move from Oregon to Chandler for work. It’d be a substantial pay raise but we also bought a house in Oregon like a month ago so it’s not the best timing. Wife is a teacher so I’m concerned about getting her into a good school district as well. Any advice/things to consider? The only advice I’ve gotten so far is that it’s hot (but it’s a dry heat).
Well, CUSD, the local district inside Chandler is about the best in the metro-Phoenix area for public school teachers. Both my mother and her partner have been teachers there for a long time, really well treated in general for a low-paying state for teachers. There are still pockets of Chandler that are very affordable, housing wise, so that could help. The 'downtown' area has had a lot of money pumped and is fairly enjoyable for younger couples and young families. It's not Scottsdale or Tempe, but it works. The heat is easy enough to deal with, drink water and stay out of the sun in the afternoon, when possible in the high summer. It's the dirt and dryness that might get someone used to green and humidity.
Every time I come here I think about how I would have not possibly survived my 20s had I lived in this city.
Forgot to mention this from my Browns trip in December. The accurate dong-to-lady ratio in Old Town Scottsdale is precisely 7,000,000:1
Outside of tacos and family, the valley sucks ass. Old town Scottsdale has to be one of the lamest “destinations” I’ve ever been to. Being adjacent mountains certainly has its perks though. By that I mean I leave the valley every chance I get.
What exactly do you want? I don't think visiting here would be particularly entertaining for long but it's a nice place to live.
HOT TAKE ALERT: Whole lotta meh outta me for it being a good place to live. Cost of living is relatively low, so there’s that. Culture sucks, people are rude AF, driving sucks, live music sucks for the most part compared to other similarly sized cities. They pay teachers shit here and it shows. And it’s one of the fastest growing cities in the country with no fucking water and dipshits water their lawns at 5PM at peak heat in the summer. The entire valley was built around cars so everything is a million miles apart. Definition of suburban sprawl. I also hate the summers, there isn’t much *getting use to it* when it’s 115. OTOH, lots of shit to do outdoors. My opinion of Phoenix is essentially the exact opposite of yours, nice place to visit, not good for the long haul. Haters ball over here. I’m just not into it.
I moved here from the northeast. It's cheap and doesn't snow. Pretty good emerging restaurant and brewery scene. Live music I'm into is enough for me in terms of what comes around. It checks enough boxes for me. I'm not even a real big outdoors guy but the options are nice. The public transportation is shit and driving here does suck. The fact there's no easy way to get to out to two of the larger sports/entertainment venues is utterly ridiculous. The lack of culture doesn't really bother me, I knew what I was signing up for moving to a city flooded with transplants.
My uncle tells me that they’re building some bypass around the city, so now it will be a much shorter drive for him to the stadium.
I loved my time in Phoenix. There’s tons to do. Weather is tight af 70% of the time. People are no worse than any other major city to me. That’s a lazy statement imo. The roadways are a grid with loops and highways that keep things going. I think it’s an awesome city with a lot to do. I miss living there quite a bit. Old town is shit but day drinking there is still a fun time.
Call me crazy but I like living here because it doesn’t get cold and it doesn’t snow. Other than spots in California, there’s not many places I’d rather in be than North Scottsdale from October-May.
I feel a lot of that could be said of other large cities; the traffic, people, teacher salary. Will be interesting to see what they do about the water issue. It's just not the Colorado being over harvested, but the ground water is taking a hit too and not replenishing.
