Yup yup terrible lists those two you mentioned but Spotify is pretty spot on with my weekly discover and release radar that’s where I usually go down my rabbit holes for modern hip hop nowadays and also been listening to more UK and French hip Hop as well
Crazy how this exact same argument is had over and over across eras and across genres. News flash, shit don't change that much. Just because you get older doesn't mean everyone coming along is a fool
i guess what I was getting at was that 90s hip hop Songs he was then able to go back and find the original sample and use that not the actual song itself which was likely based on a sample from a song in the 70s or 60s
One of the things I really enjoy about this era of rap is that the guys that I really dig tend to veer away from pop influences and stick to their vision probably better than any other era. The TDE, Dreamville, Griselda camps and others all seem to be saying fuck establishment hip hop and making music that really dope especially if you’re just a hip hop nerd. it’s a terrible time for rap radio but it’s an awesome time for rap
Awesome production, bars bars bars and griselda features. Little bit of that Freddie Gibbs anti-vax stuff but there’s sooo much good here
The Allegory is probably my favorite pure rap album so far this year. Mac still has a better album and if Zel and KB had about 4 more slaps it wouldn’t be a competition but this album is pretty great cover to cover and it’s just some old head food for the spirit
Got damn, i like what im hearing from Jack Harlow My whole life, my stance on white rappers is: if they rap too fast to show off technical skill, not a fan. If they mix up the flow and the cadence, and sometimes ride the beat, i like it Then Post Malone (who i hate) and this Harlow guy (who i like) flip the rule on its head
The more a white rapper focuses on a crisp and clean delivery with a solid flow the less likely they are to toss in corny shit to fill in the gaps. It also doesn’t mean you lack skill if you aren’t rapping fast. Clever wordplay at any speed is what I care about most.
If you guys were to single out a rapper who has had a substantial career that you consider to be overrated or you don’t really get the hype (generational biases aside), who would you point to?
My answer to this is without hesitation The Game. I cannot for the life of me understand how he cannot drop a single track without name dropping no less than 10 people and that shit wore thin on me about 5 tracks into the documentary
I think his Dre Co-sign was huge for him and the fact that at the time the west coast was desperate for a star. His cadence and delivery isn’t terrible at all but his simple ass lyrical content is borderline embarrassing and I can’t believe nearly 20 years later he’s still making music
This will likely receive backlash, but in terms of rapping, I’ve never seen the appeal of Future or Young Thug. Thug’s production and the full experience is bonkers tho.
I agree with you 100% but both of those guys are gods in some circles. Legitimately some folk put them in the GOAT discussion. Neither work for me at all.
