I mean I definitely dont think you'll receive any backlash for that. Feels like a pretty common opinion in this thread

It’s kind of why I put the “generational bias” disclaimer in with my post. If I were to go by my taste, I would have went with Future, Thugger and Post Malone off rip but I think there’s definitely a generational divide wrt their music. I think that their stuff is basically the smoke and ride music of this generation. We had shit like 36 Mafia and No Limit records when I was growing up that was of questionable skill quality but we still smoked up and loved it

I can agree with this cuz I loved some Tru, No Limit, and 36 Mafia when I was just like 16-19 years old sitting in the park or a porch with my homies smoking an Philly blunt and drinking some Old E or St Ides

I tried to listen to the Dayton Family recently and that’s legit serial killer music. I can’t imagine how faded I must’ve been to listen to that shit

I think the lesson here is that we had our trash coming up as well. I fucked with No Limit and Triple Six and I’ll engage in hand to hand if this thread ever decides to talk shit about The Last Mr Bigg. I didn’t fuck with it as hard as I did Guru and Premier, Andre and Antwan, Shawn and Nasir but I found a place for that shit as well. The cool thing about Rap Music is that the primary instrument is wordplay and it doesn’t matter how old I get there’s always gonna be someone who wants to play the guitar better than the next guy and there’s always gonna be rappers perfecting the craft.

Lil Pump and Tekashi are irredeemable tho

Got two more questions for the thread

1: Is kinda in the same mold as the last but the opposite. Who out there that has had a substantial career do you feel like is underrated or doesn’t get the respect they deserve?

2: Who is on your rap music Mt Rushmore?

depends on what you consider underrated. Ones like Danny Brown and Doom are much more critically acclaimed than overall popular. I think Little Brother and Phonte in particular had a big influence on some of the more popular artists nowadays. Drake was talking about the Phonte influence very early on and Kendrick was rapping over Foreign Exchange beats. Oddisee, Smoke DZA, Skyzoo are some others. Action Bronson had a run with Dr. Lecter, Well Done, Blue Chips, Rare Chandeliers and Blue Chips 2 that was pretty nasty in hindsight. Probably would've said Freddie Gibbs a year or so ago, but he's transcended that at this point imo.

my four favorite hip-hop artists are Andre 3000, Ghostface, Kendrick and Kanye. if we're talking straight MC's sub Black Thought for Kanye

When we say Mt. Rushmore are we talking who we think are the greatest 4 ever or who are our personal favorite 4 ever?

Kinda look for an answer for both tbh.

who would you say belongs on there as far as impact and who do you think belongs there as far as preference

my preference looks very fucking similar to C-Pay

And when I say underrated I just mean it from your perspective as far as guys out now who you believe may not get respect like you think they should.

I’m a firm believer that folk don’t show ASAP Rocky enough love

Gotcha gotcha. I definitely respect that list. I know my personal preference list would include Lil Wayne, Kanye, Jay Z and Kendrick. I don't think its a coincidence that those were the artists that ruled the world when I was 18 haha. If I remove my own bias from the situation I think Kendrick, Kanye, Andre 3k, and Biggie would satisfy me. My methodology there being that you get a good representation of the regions that have taken turns ruling the hip hop world. I know some people would take issue with Kendrick representing the west coast over someone like Tupac or Dre and the same could be said for Biggie over Jay Z or Nas etc but I think they are undeniably great representatives for their place of origin.

For underrated I will go Denzel Curry. He gets love from hip hop heads but the average casual listener isnt aware of how great he is.

Fucking how did I forget Spice-1, X-raided, Souls of Mischief and Del.

It’s wild thinking back to how narrow my music knowledge was outside of west coast rappers. I was a part of the problem with the east coast vs west coast shit. It wasn’t until I heard Black Moon at a concert in New York freestyling where my mind was changed forever. I remember the toughest decision was deciding between Illmatic and MC Eiht We Come Strapped

considered Q-Tip in my four as well...probably doesn't have as expansive an MC body of work as the others, but obviously is one of the best producers ever. Recently wrote out my 10 favorite albums and keep coming back to Midnight Marauders as top 3. It's flawless
