all time mt rushmore krs ice cube black thought rakim my mt rushmore black thought phonte krs ghostface most underrated busta rhymes and dj quik most overrated can’t really answer
Guru Eminem Phife Dawg Nas Andre 3000 Bit fucked up and may regret this list, certainly love BIG, Pac, Big L and they were fucking amazing but I'm a nearly 35 year old white man. How the fuck can I relate to that music.
I’m 38 and I continue to find ways to relate to rap music even if it means I have to draw from my past.
I would add but y'all probably would hate it. I don't listen to much new rap at all really. Kinda stuck in my old ass ways.
For me personally, their music gave me a window and a perspective I couldn't get living in west Mobile, AL. Several of my best friends growing were kids from the projects. They could play ball so my dad had recruited them to play with us at an early age. They spent every weekend at my house. They saw my world. I never saw their world. Ever really thought about why I never stayed at their house at 8 yrs old. Pac's music gave me perspective on the bullshit my friends dealt with, things I was completely blind to, had no idea they even existed. As we grew older we had conversations about them being petrified of cops bc of the abuse, not wanting to call for help bc of the abuse. We talked about them never putting their hands in their pockets in a store bc they didn't want to be accused of stealing. About being pulled over for no reason bc they were in my neighborhood while black in a hooptie. Pac opened that dialogue for us so he'll always be #1 for me. He opened the mind of a young white kid in Alabama. That means more than any flow or bar imo.
Kind of along the same lines, what would be some your must have albums (on vinyl)? My valentine's present from the wife was a vinyl of my choice (and I'm a snob, I go for original releases almost 100%, no re released shit here). Already have original releases of The Chronic ATliens The Boyz N the Hood single Straight Outta Compton The Black Album
When I edit and post my pod in here, if you listen to it just be aware that I recorded it yesterday and I didn’t steal your take
My top 4 (grew up mid to late 90s) Hov Andre 3k Q-Tip (ATCQ) My fourth rotates: Nas, Big, Pac, Eminem, Kendrick, J Cole, Drake (yes he makes great music) Gun to my head on 4th, I am saying Em. My first listen reaction (while high af) to the Eminem Show has stuck with me all these years later. Just awestruck with the skill and lyricism. Made my no-talent ass want to be in hip hop lol.
As much shit as I like to give em I was actually a big fan of the Eminem show outside of the typical pop release and his journey twords the more arena style rap. Bones Collapse is a fucking legendary song.
I’m not really satisfied with how the pod turned out due to one guest having some pretty extensive technical problems and some areas that I really need to work on (very fixable things). I like the discussion we had and I think it’s interesting but it needs heavy editing to be worthwhile. I think I’m gonna publish the raw podcast. If anyone in here is interested in listening DM and let me know and I’ll send it to you. I’d like some honest feedback
Might put Last Emperor and Del on my top 5 or close to it list. Del was much more famous but neither got the due they deserved.
My Mt Rushmore personally is 3k, Jay, Kendrick and DJ Premier. overall it’s Rakim, Dre, Scarface and Kanye
He had me wondering with “lasers” but then returned to form. Food & Liquor + The Cool are the best though
Loved food and liquor. Didn’t really mess with much of his stuff, minus occasional singles, after that
I love the concepts Lupe will do. A song like “mural” that’s one huge verse, no hook. I love the creativity/artistry he brings
If I’m playing the cool my first two stops are title track (banger beat produced by Kanye with cool/creepy storytelling) and “dumb it down”
I still remember getting introduced to a lot of GOAT shit from a post user cal made on here like 10 years ago. Lupe and binary star “masters of the universe” are two things I remember getting turned on to. Cal’s top 20 hip hop albums or some such
I also found Jedi mind tricks “uncommon valor” through rivals in like 2007. Still to this day few songs have hit me like that. I liked rap in high school but put it aside bc I mistakenly thought it was all bling bling. Finding that song got me to start paying attention again
