Terms of Surrender has like 30 of the sickest riffs from the past 10 years

 

We never did an album of the decade ranking in here, but I really think the latest Slugdge album might be my favorite. Definitely has had the most staying power for me over the past 2 years.

 

I found a way to agree with both of these opinions

but I disagreed with this.

death metal is more than just harsh vocals. there’s a whole guitar tone (ex: HM2 pedal) and riff library unique to it. just like thrash, and just like black metal.

 

tough to render this opinion, but I would go with:

Mgla - With Hearts Towards None

i have every note of this album memorized. it’s been the soundtrack to so many critical periods in my life. people prefer other Mgla albums, but nothing will top this record imo.

that Slugdge album is phenomenal though.

 

thrash with harsh vocals and modern production, imo

Metal Archives lists them and Vektor as “progressive thrash” fwiw

#2 sounds familiar but not quite sure who they are. Definitely never heard of #1.

Yeah, I really liked the Leprous album before this one. This one is weird as shit, though, and not the weird I like. Kudos for going into a totally new direction, but yeah, not heavy in the slightest.

Their drummer is the street drummer from Oslo who went viral when YouTube was just blowing up 10-15 years ago. He’s amazing.

 

If we’re doing embarrassing stuff, I still listen to Kiss regularly. I like Polyphia.

Do you guys consider Kiss a heavy metal or hard rock band?

the best definition i've heard for something being "metal" is that you have to be able to draw a direct line from Black Sabbath to the band in question. I would say no for Kiss on those grounds

 

but really i only care about bands being labeled as "metal" or not metal when some poser who doesn't actually like metal is talking about it

Yeah, I don't know anybody who would call Kiss a metal band. They were among other hard rock bands in 1974 when they debuted, but certainly not from the Sabbath line.

this came out of nowhere. new Katatonia. their music is kind of cheesy and melodramatic but i love it

Katatonia guy can really sing

 

They had quite the run in the 90's

 

I could never get into Paradise Lost but I struggle with that side of doom metal just generally. Always preferred the stoner stuff with more pace (Electric Wizard).

Sleep is the only one of the plodding, slow doom bands that I can really vibe with.

Some of the newer death/doom bands are good though, and they have slow parts (Temple of Void, Hooded Menace).

 

My Dying Bride has a new album out as well, which I enjoyed. First half especially.

 

Love MDB! Most 90's Paradise Lost albums have a slew of uptempo tracks... for doom.
