The paranoid conspiracist in me wonders if Trumps is happy to see covid-19 get out of control because those hit hardest will be metropolitan areas. And metropolitan areas tend to be Democratic strongholds. While the Republican's core demographic of Boomers and Silents will suffer the most fatalities, I still think any devastation will more greatly harm Democratic territories over those areas with built-in isolationism within the vast Trumpland. And then the sane version of me realizes that Trump obviously has no grand plan other than worrying about his image and building his ego.

I'm actually not mad at his idea. If what he posted on Twitter is the real plan. Each US household under $200k gets a debit card with $1k for food, necessities, $1k for health related goods and services and $300 for things like gas, utilities. Have to spend it in 30 days though. And after 30 days if another round is needed they do it again. Seems like a good idea although I'm sure this administration would fuck it up or corrupt it.
I mean that's my preference as well. Just I was shocked that it seemed like a well meaning idea considering the source.
Honestly, I don't know where this need to be paternalistic comes from. Why does money have to come with strings. Just give it to people and trust that most will use it responsibly.

Unfortunately, because of lack of available testing, deaths are perhaps the best method we have available at our disposal for tracking the course of the virus and projecting its spread. To give you an idea of what up against, deaths every day over the last week: Thursday: 3 Friday: 8 Saturday: 8 Sunday: 11 Monday: 18 Tuesday: 23 Today, with about 7 hours left of reporting: 41 Hopefully today is a bit of an outlier. We were already looking at these numbers growing to about 1000 deaths every day by April 1. We should have a better idea of what we're up against in about a week when the data starts becoming more reliable.
