Today was lit - evacuated the building twice for an hour each time - multiple fights the 2nd evacuation - upper class men and lower class men are now separated in the auditorium and cafeteria now for the rest of the day
VA closed all schools 2 weeks, but word was the teachers would still come and and they would try some teaching remote to students at home. I don’t see how any school would be set up for that. It will be interesting to hear what happens, couple coworkers wives teach.
We are closed next week; distance learning but we are 1 to 1 technology. I expect to be closed the week after that too. Staff had to work today and students were allowed in the building to get personal items. I think the main thing that stood out to me after several students stopped by was that they need/want to see us because we are part of their normal routine.
Man, the amount of kids who annoy you all year then tell you that “you’re my favorite teacher” at the end of the year is baffling.
We’re officially off until 4/12. We have one day to figure out how to teach over zoom (Monday) and then online high school begins on Tuesday.
Out until the 6th; admin has asked us to come to school this afternoon to get personal things and turn in keys. There’s a possibility we may shut it down for the rest of the year. If it’s true that children are prone to being symptomless carriers, I could see that trend continuing nationwide if there’s no slowdown by early April.
First day on virtual platform seemed to be a success although I feel more worn out than a normal teaching day. Go team
District I work in is turning off all teachers badge access to the buildings tomorrow until April They don't want anyone in the buildings but cleaning staff and maintenance
Unless they spray down and scrub every kid and adult at the front gate that mass cleaning won't do dick at this point. We're out through 3/30 but I fully expect to be on my couch until August.
Extended us until 3/31, but spring break starts 4/4 so I doubt we are back before break and honestly think this year is done.
Pretty sure it’s this. Also, lot of general murmurs among faculty that they’re anticipating us closing for the rest of the year.
Principal emailed us saying put work on an online platform for the students. Yeah, that’s not happening
Our school is taking this "one week at a time." The Superintendent is holding out hope we'll be back soon. Staff met at school today to develop a plan for getting core subject work to the students primarily online but also provide alternative for those without internet. It's a low income district with a lot of at risk kids. While the intention is good, it's hard for me to be very optimistic for how this will go. I don't think some get how bad this could end up as a couple of people brought up the idea of opening the school for kids without internet to come do their work at school during the day...
Also before we left for spring break on the 6th, we were asked to provide our intent to return by this Wednesday. They reiterated today that it's still due. Have an opportunity at another district and with the way admin has handled this is making me even more likely to leave but it's my first year and I really love the kids. Other job is a significant raise and BFF works at that district (different campus) but it includes more coaching duties I'm not thrilled about.
We are >80% free lunch so I’m assuming we have about the same population. We’re sending jetpack hotspots home with them. ...and out of all of the challenges, the hardest part is going to be taking attendance.
We have chromebooks to lend out but no hotspots for those without wifi. Someone suggested today they could get a chromebook and if they needed internet access, just go to a restaurant that has free wifi
Our district in MI has done a pretty poor job communicating what the expectations are on the material. It was said the educational opportunities would be available in the teacher's google classroom. Nothing about having to submit work, expectations on grading or anything. SIL teaches in a neighboring district and said they have to do the same thing, however, the students will not be help accountable for any of the work but if they weren't transitioned to online in some capacity the time wouldn't could as teaching to get paid and count towards school days. Or something to that effect.
Our district has Canvas; however they’ve failed to utilize it the past 4 years. Ever since they stop going to 1 to 1 MacBooks Airs
Did a lab today. Videoed the data collection and shared necessary data for analysis. So far I’ve had pretty good participation from the students.
Daughters teacher had to lessen the amount of at-home work after parents complained it was too much. I think 1/3 is a week ahead right now
College board is saying they have a plan that AP students may do their AP test at home. More details March 20th but I’m curious how this will work. I’m in leadership at the reading and I don’t see how we will be reading on site this year. My subject is small compared to others but there are ~390 readers in my subject that pile into the same location. Add in the other subjects at the same time and it’s easily 3000 people. Grading from home is an option but that means scanning every page. My subject is typically 10 pages of student work at 220,000 students globally.
We’re out until April 10th. our district reached out yesterday to gauge how many teachers have reliable internet and computer. We are woefully unprepared for any sort of distance learning on top of that, I’m quite certain around 30-40% of students will have neither, let alone one.
been doing breakfast/lunch distribution all week...averaging about 160 of each every day. toying with the idea of loading up the busses and doing deliveries to the all the bus stops. we’d feed hella more kids that way imo.
update on this: doing about 200 a day now at my site. added two additional school sites and are sending busses to low income neighborhoods and mobile home parks. we’re reaching a lot of families but still feels like we could reach more
They’re still figuring out how they want to do distance learning. Kinda left in a holding pattern. I did go to my class today to bring some stuff home. Weird being in school with only 6 other people on campus
Didn’t even bother going to pick up stuff in my classroom. It’s just going to sit there until next school year.
Fine, but we are 1 to 1, so somethings were already built in. I teach all AP too, so students are more motivated (mostly). I had all my courses finishing new content next week and we are still at that point. Students have done a good job with their work the last two weeks. It’s taken a lot of time recording things for them and making sure things are clear for 3 preps though.
we’ve been fully online for seven days now- out until the end of april at least. our teachers aren’t able to teach new content, which seems constrictive and has limited shelf life imo honestly tho at what point do assignments and grades not really matter. im on the support staff side of things obv but we’ll get to a point where they’ll feel pretty insignificant right?
Wife teaches in the county next to mine. She’s in same boat. She can’t teach anything new, no grades, and the district rolled out some project for students to do because there is no technology there. It’s weird because the project was created by someone, but my wife is the head of her content for the entire system (1high school) but she had no input on it. So she’s basically homeschooling our kindergartener while I teach virtually. I am still allowed to grade but I cannot put in zeroes or late work, which I’m fine with.
Principal emails us. Create a google voice or text for your parents and scholars to contact you. Me - hell the fuck no
