I think pretty much everyone acknowledges way more people have it than confirmed positive tests asymptomatic and just a lack of testing both pushing the positive cases down
Yeah it’s likely it is not as fatal as numbers indicate but that’s then offset by the logic that it is much more widespread. Even if mortality rates are below 1% in actuality the reality is a shit load more people have it and are going to get it. You get inundated ICUs and medical staff mortality rates for other conditions needing serious medical attention are also going to go up. It’s not just about this virus
the ironic part about that is it is pushing the death total as a % of infected higher. My opinion on this is it’s not as deadly as the numbers are suggesting but that doesn’t include severe complications and assumes that people are getting proper treatment. In many parts of the country they are but NYC hospitals are so overrun that I can’t imagine many of the patients are getting the ideal care. the messaging on this virus has been an unmitigated disaster and that starts with the man in charge.
this slow and subtle shift to people almost arguing we shouldn't do shelter in place or anything because the spread is unavoidable because of asymptomatic carriers is both grotesque in that it's a partisan reaction to support trumps lets go back to work shift but also doesn't really explain why so many countries have been so successful avoiding the massive outbreaks like we're getting here it just kind of hand waves away that you can fight this thing effectively as seen in many places, seemingly again for partisan defenses for trumps failure it's all gross
things are different in the south. Not sure that people in many parts of the country have exposure to the people involved and connected to these cult like religious organizations that say and do the kind of asinine shit we are going to see. Those Easter services will be packed in a lot of places regardless of the virus now that the second coming Donald trump said what he said.
Exactly, how fatal any disease is is dependent upon your ability to get treatment for it. If hospitals are overrun, every condition becomes more lethal.
seeing the personality cult searching for the best defense to help daddy in real-time has been extra nauseating. it still is astonishing how unified those test drives become, you can see the seeds of what they'll all be arguing in 24 hours from a few viral things pop up on twitter, then when it doesn't take they all move on to some new defense.
I agree with your point but how many places have seen a lot of success with this? I think the only places to see success had much quicker reactions to testing and didn’t have a president calling it fake for awhile. Even when he changed his mind and cared for 7-10 days, people’s minds were already made up. You also had testing go so slowly and ineffectively that when the media made a big deal before the cases piled up, people decided it wasn’t their problem. The trump wave of government distrust has also created a big issue.
History is on their side. This isn’t the first outbreak in China. Wearing masks and being cautious is something that isn’t new to a lot of people in that part of the world. I’d argue that the citizens buy in was greater. Obviously South Korea also rolled out testing early enough to curb it. Once our testing strategy failed, we needed to stay home and the government was also slow in setting that up.
It doesn’t matter what the truth or reality is or what the media are reporting the deplorables have their Fox News talking points. Nothing will change their minds until their world is devastated by the virus. Problem is it comes with too many non MAGA’s contracting Covid.
I mean, I understand the spirit of what you’re saying but it definitely matters a lot. Its the difference in a worst case scenario being 2M deaths vs. 40,000. Orders of magnitude difference. Not saying I buy it, but would love someone who understand how epidemiologist’s models work to chime in (if we have that expertise on the board).
well yeah, but none of these changes the point that the "us getting annihilated is inevitable" take is a retroactive defense i'm not really sure what you're arguing
Sure - the specific question is “everyone acknowledges that is true because it’s common sense. Therefore, the experts giving estimated death rates are surely taking that into account?” Because some Stanford doctors are implying that’s not the case which would be mind blowing.
Idk, that’s something I have no insight into but do they even have an accurate estimation at this point?
Bars, restaurants, everything. “Social distancing” My brother in law owns a bar and he is staying open until the city says otherwise. I know he’s worried about an income but I’ve tried telling him and my sister to shut it down for a few weeks to keep people from getting together. I understand they are worried but taking it a few weeks at a time isn’t going to kill them. Plus, our parents are pretty well off and they sure as hell aren’t going to let their grandkids starve to death if money becomes tight. I saw a few Snapchats this past weekend of my buddy at a party with a city official, some who work in education, nurses, people who should give a fuck.
Received this email from one of my employees fiance this morning. Guessing it is not Covid even though he has been exposed through her and does have a history of breathing issues, but not a good time for a medical emergency and my heart sunk. he is in his late 20's early 30's at best. Hi , My name is Kelly and I am Zack's fiancé. I’m writing to you to inform you that Zack has had a medical emergency tonight and is going to not be able to return to work for some time. We should know a better timeline tomorrow however I wanted to inform you tonight so you’re aware. If you need any medical documentation please don’t hesitate to reach out and I’ll keep you posted if anything changes. Thank you for your understanding. Best, Kelly
Months from now when this is (hopefully) over, I want to see a conversation where these same assholes who say seniors should sacrifice to save younger generations are asked about making climate changes for these same generations. I'm guessing not having a planet won't be as important as not having an economy. I quit in January. I've been asked by friends to come back and comment on what's going on, but after my conversation I posted Tuesday night I passed. I might fight somebody at this point.
this has been talked about quite a bit, mostly iirc in the other thread, the 3-5 mill US death cases seems off the table with what we know about asymptomatic carriers unless we do the "fuck it lets all go back to work" option where you get cascading deaths from insane hospital capacity failure like if the outcomes are on a normal distribution the back end has flattened, but I think most people still think the US has a range of outcomes from 100k deaths to 1.5 mill would be the range over the next 18 months but again, none of this functionally changes what people need to be doing
It’s happening at my wife’s hospital. Everyone has to sign out their masks so they can track who has them.
If you watch Brooklyn 99 American political memory is like Pimento having Finding Dory disease. If you don't watch Brooklyn 99 you should.
It really pisses me off when I voice this opinion and people counter with “that seems like we would’ve been overreacting then”
joe is a pos for saying bert should jump in front of a train (which he should just for society's safety) but bert saying poor people should starve to death is just political discourse amongst friends. i am very smart
Possibly covered since I skimmed some pages but tody is the day Michael Rappaport became President. NSFW unless you're working from home.
its just insane that the blatantly obvious answer to all of this is to just test the shit out of everybody multiple times over and over again for the next 18-24 months until we have a vaccine and yet nothing is being done to make sure it happens.
I love Rapaport. This is the message I want to yell from the rooftops but everyone I know would become the civility police.
