I just can't see how they would skip an entire draft like that. Would be such a short sighted way of going about it to skip over an entire class.

I could see them shortening it by 10-20 rounds under the idea of not getting enough of a look at players, but you're screwing over 2 full draft classes by skipping the one, and that hurts the teams in the long run.

    6. Detroit Tigers ($261 million, 39 players, averaging $6.7 million)

The Tigers, along with the Marlins, Mariners, White Sox and Padres, are the five organizations currently at various stages of a traditional tear-down rebuild: sell off the big league team for parts, go into talent collection mode and don't plan on contending or spending much in free agency for multiple years in pursuit of a homegrown, young, contending club. The Padres and White Sox have turned the corner and are now trying to add veterans to build contenders, while the other three clubs likely have one more year at the bottom of the standings before a wave of young talent helps dictate when the veteran-adding stage will happen. The Tigers might have more variance than the others since their best and first-arriving reinforcements are all pitchers (RHP Matt Manning, RHP Casey Mize, LHP Tarik Skubal), while their lineup of the future has only a couple of spots filled, with another likely coming from the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft.

Going to be some very interesting negotiations. Agents are going to be dealing with tough circumstances for clients, and teams are probably going to be very unafraid of not signing a player because they would just get the same pick in 2021 with a deeper draft they would actually be able to scout players for.

If you're an agent for a player who wants to turn pro, I think you have to work even harder this year to do pre-draft deals to make sure you're not left with nothing.

The way I look at it. Martin and Torkelson are premier players, who would probably still go top 5 next year.

They might be top 5 in 2021, but it holds them out of the minors for a year (if they get to play minor league ball this year), which slows their clock to MLB. Also creates a log jam at the top of next year's class.

This deal is interesting in that both sides are going to have leverage in negotiations, but the clear down side for players going back into 2021 in what will amount to a 1.5 draft is real. 90% deferrals seem kind of insane to me, but the PA has always screwed over the amateur players in the US and internationally because they're stupid and just don't get it.

As much as I think the deferrals are ridiculous, some of the complaints I've already seen about them cutting the draft to 10 rounds are stupid, IMO. Some people are going to bitch about every time a billionaire saves money, but 40 rounds is at least 10 too many in a normal draft year, and with the NCAA giving back the year of eligibility to players you're never going to sign 20+ rounds of talent. Guys like Calcaterra bitching about it on Twitter don't understand the draft and are only talking about it for the politics.

    5) Detroit Tigers

    2019 preseason rank: 10
    2019 midseason rank: 6
Top 100 Prospects: Casey Mize, RHP (No. 7), Matt Manning, RHP (No. 24), Riley Greene, OF (No. 31), Tarik Skubal, LHP (No. 46)
Top 2020 rookie: Casey Mize, RHP
Help is on the way thanks to the Tigers’ wave of upper-level pitching prospects, and the club also has a promising crop of young hitters that could move faster than originally thought.

Posted this list of OF who played during Kaline's era in the MLB thread...

    Mays
    Aaron
    Mantle
    Williams
    Musial
    Robinson
    Yaz
    Kaline
    Clemente

Only guys there who didn't play at the same time where Williams and Yaz, with Yaz taking Williams' spot in LF after he retired in 1960. Based on fWAR, Kaline is the 26th best position player of all time, yet probably ranked somewhere between 7-9 in terms of OFers of his era. What an absurd generation of talent at one position/group, and probably why he's not as well known nationally as an all-time great.

Thought this was a really good read about Kaline's career. Some of his quotes in there are kind of amazing about turning down money he didn't think he earned, and basically saying he didn't think he was as good as people thought he was. I also didn't know about the foot issue.

ESPN did a story on each teams most hyped prospects ever. Detroit came in last with Matt Anderson. He was the first name that came to mind when I clicked the story so I’ll say it’s probably right.

Not sure of the rules of the article, but for me it was Milt Cuyler. Damn I loved me some Milt.

For a little while, you could have said Maybin or Miller, but they both turned things around quite a bit.

Here are the most hyped prospect for each team, sorted into tiers focusing on that time when the player was drafted until he reaches the big leagues. It skews to the past couple of decades, mostly because we do know so much more about prospects than we used to -- not to suggest that players Mickey Mantle were ignored back in the day -- and we can watch video and read scouting reports and dream on what might happen.

    Detroit Tigers: Matt Anderson

Also considered: Al Kaline, Kirk Gibson, Justin Verlander, Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, Casey Mize

Quote: "We felt Matt had the best arm in the draft. He has a terrific arm and terrific makeup." -- Tigers general manager Randy Smith

The Tigers are the only team without a single player ranked in Baseball America's top five overall prospects since those lists debuted in 1990. Maybin reached No. 6 in 2007 and Miller No. 10 the same year (both were later traded for Miguel Cabrera). Gibson was an All-American wide receiver at Michigan State when the Tigers drafted him in the first round and a ballyhooed prospect. Verlander, despite a 1.29 ERA in the minors in 2005, was just the No. 8 prospect in 2006.

Anderson was ranked 24th on the list in his one year of eligibility, but he was the first overall pick in 1997, a right-hander from Rice who clocked triple digits on the radar gun. The twist: He was a relief pitcher. Yes, an odd choice for the first pick, made in part because the Tigers perceived that Anderson would be easier to sign.

He actually didn't sign until December but reached the majors quickly. He struggled with his control, however, walking 111 in 156⅓ innings in his first three seasons. A White Sox scouting report from his draft year helps explain his control problems: "Max effort delivery. Little bit of a long armer in back. Flies with frontside and spins off with lower half. Location of pitches will be a problem with this delivery. Needs to have a second or third pitch. Even with his arm strength the hitters take their cuts." Anderson did have a bit of a breakthrough in 2001, when he saved 22 games in 24 opportunities (although with a 4.82 ERA). That got him a three-year, $9.3 million contract from Detroit, but he hurt his arm in 2002 and pitched just 44 more innings in the majors.

I don't think Anderson was more hyped than any of the people they "considered", or several others they didn't (Juan Encarnacion from that same era comes to mind).

He was hyped a lot for a little bit, but we traded him for Juan Gonzalez before he played in the big leagues so I'd probably put him in a different category.
