This and Yvette get far too little love on Southeastern and from Isbell tbh with how infrequently he plays them at shows
I’m younger than a lot of folks itt so songs that she sang was my intro to Isbell and it’ll always be a really important song for me Also Dreamsicle is my favorite thing he’s released in a while
But last year he did allow himself one extravagance, when a chance presented itself to buy one of the most famous guitars ever made: a 1959 Les Paul formerly owned by Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ed King. Isbell bought the guitar, known to the world as Redeye, from King's widow. “It was a ridiculous purchase, and I had to play a bunch of weird birthday parties and shit to cover it, so nobody else was affected by the ridiculousness of my guitar purchase,” How much does Isbell cost for a birthday party?
The Red Eye was appraised at $500k a few years back, so I'd say a pretty penny for those birthday parties.
I turn 35 in November so I'll volunteer to throw the party. Taking donations from tmbers for an invite.
So one first class ticket + 5 Star Hotel and need to find a sound engineer/stage/pa and we're good to go
Dreamsicle is damn good. 1. Dreamsicle 2. Only Children (Significant gap) 3. Be afraid 4. What have i done to help
Hurricanes and Hand Grenades is my unicorn live. And complaining to him about not playing it on the back patio of Jammin Java after an acoustic show is my main regret.
New South Wales is one of my favorites that didn't make the list. Did he write the day John Henry died? That was probably the first dbt/Isbell song I ever heard. Still love it. Appreciate the move for children of children. Great song.
Only Children just gives me chills every time I listen to it. He seems to really be aware how lucky he is to be in his position. (.."they let me be an astronaut") It's just a touching song and he really puts me into that place where it's just him in and a few friends in their 20s getting fucked up writing songs.
The magician needs to be on that list and super 8 can get lost. No decoration day is a horrible omission and danko/Manuel should be higher.
Way too much hatred for the only song ever written to incorporate a fungo bat and pedialyte, and I will not stand for it.
How the hell can any of you listen to Be Afraid, Only Children and Dreamsicle and not be excited about this album?
Also, Super 8 is way too high on that list. It’s a fine song but Go It Alone, The Day John Henry Died and Never Gonna Change are better “rockers”
What Have I Done to Help isn’t the best song in the catalog but it rewards you with some great guitar work if you stick through it. The organ is tight too.
The Day John Henry Died is an insanely underrated, if not forgotten entirely, song from DBT Isbell and it’s a perfect song imo
Delta Spirit tweeted earlier that they’re looking for a videographer for a new single so that’s awesome news
Truth be told, Goddamn Lonely Love is an entirely song on The Dirty South as it is on Live from Alabama and therefore should be ranked first and second
would have to be at a Ryman 6 night stint imo. A night where they just spent the night playing old songs
My personal top ten: 1. Goddamn Lonely Love 2. Elephant 3. If We Were Vampires 4. Danko/Manuel 5. Decoration Day 6. Outfit 7. Streetlights 8. Alabama Pines 9. Dress Blues 10. Speed Trap Town
yes they are, but it was all on Isbell getting sober. if he didnt everyone would have abandoned him or he'd be dead
