I went onto total wine for a Denver location pickup and here are my picks sub $40:

    Penner ash $35
    Patricia Green $23
    Ken Wright Willamette Valley $20
    Adelsheim $20
Soter planet Oregon Pinot $18(great value buy)
Purple hands $23 (ken wrights son)
Beaux Freres Pinot $73 (yeah it’s not under $40 but it might be my favorite Pinot right now)
    Stroller $23

From this list my first tries would be Penner Ash, Adelsheim, Soter and Purple Hands

not going to pretend i'm some sort of wine expert, but this was really really good. i think if you sign up for paul hobbs mailing list you can buy for $70 a bottle or something.

Guys, that's fucking awesome. Thank you.

We don't have any single purchase codes but are doing $35 off first club shipment for new club members. Either way, the Division tasting should be awesome. Those wines are killer.

There are more prestigious villages in Bourgogne but I don’t think there is any better value than Volnay. Paired with mushroom and ramp risotto.

I’m probably ordering another case. This can still use time in the bottle but it’s quite good today. It’s tight at first, opens amazingly, then loses edge after a while in the glass.

I took me a bit to warm up too but Im really liking what they make now as well. Also their tasting room in Napa is a nice break from all the stuffy tasting rooms in the area. Their winemaker and I think his assistant winemaker go down to Australia or New Zealand every year to do a harvest every Feb/March. Pretty sweet way of doing things.

Escaped NYC and back in Bama. Spent all day smoking a pork butt, and opened a 2017 Piedrasassi Syrah. Needed a couple of hours in the decanter, but man did this pair nicely.

Coravin has been clutch the last few months. Have been dipping into some nicer bottles 1-2 glasses at a time. Took about 1.5-2 glasses beginning of April from a bottle of 2003 Insignia we received as gift. Had the rest last night and there was no deterioration, at least to any detectable degree. Have about 7-8 bottles that have been "accessed" in the cellar. Will be fun seeing how they all fare with some time.

In my experience, Andy is a royal douchebag and many of the things he takes credit for (in this article and elsewhere) are chest puffing over exaggerations.

His comment about the winemakers is what's really gross. Like, Andy, you bought all this land after someone else developed its reputation and in 30 years, it's gonna be fucked because of your farming methods.

For those looking in the $20 range, there are two offer from Scherrer that are worth checking out. Free shipping on a case and 50% off. You have to create an account but these are great for the original price let alone 50% off.

2013 RRV PN and 2014 RRV Syrah
    https://scherrerwinery.com

Edit: free shipping still applies to warm weather States but will not ship until the Fall. 20% off 2 day shipping if you want them shipped now.

so is 2016 widely regarded as the best year for napa cabs in the last few decades?

I'm buying from producers I know and trust. The mountain cabs I've had (Chappellet, Diamond Creek) were very good. My guess is the valley floor is more of a minefield but that is my typical experience in any challenging vintage. The mountains benefit from being above the fog line in cold vintages and benefit from being high altitude in warm vintages so they actually see less variance in weather.

I'm really on a Syrah kick for the last couple years so I'm buying more of that. And overall I see more value in Washington that CA so I buy more WA wines but there are still some Napa wines I buy every year because they're delicious.

I mean, most winemakers I work with/talk to still regard 2013 as their pinnacle and the top vintage that will hold up for long term drinking/selling.

In Napa, my bias would be 2013 but many winemakers may say 2012 because it was a bumper crop and they had more to sell. Both good vintages but I felt like 2013 had a bit more structure which I prefer.

In Washington, no question 2013 for me. The 2012s were heralded out of the shoot but they're a bit bigger and less expressive to me.

I also think vintages that follow very difficult ones always get propped up, which IMO is the case with 2012. Funny, because now that we're almost a decade out, MANY 2011 wines from Napa (mainly hillside or mtn) are fucking beeeeeautiful.
