Oh.. I guess they have them formatted in various ways. I just have the 6 original ones in paperback. I did get the girl a hardcover bad ass version of the first one for part of her Christmas present. She's a dork like me and loved it. .
Good deal on book 1. I'm finally going to get around to this bad boy https://slickdeals.net/f/12958264-frank-herbert-dune-kindle-edition-1-99-amazon?src=frontpage
Do it dude. Don’t quit after the first book. The first is the classic but the other ones are awesome. It really ties everything together in a weird and confusing way.
finished this last night. reading through the appendixes now. this was really one of my favorite reads in a long time. I have no idea how they're going to make this into a movie. seems an impossible task. thinking of rolling right into Messiah. how big is the drop-off from the original?
All of the OG novels are amazing. Messiah is definitely a departure from the epic hero's journey of the first book, but it is absolutely worth reading. God Emperor(#4) is my favorite of the series. Initially, Dune was my favorite of the six. The direction some characters take in Messiah put me off, but having read and re-read them all a few times my opinion has changed. I consider the first four books to be absolute masterpieces. Spoiler: Spoiler Paul was a pussy who lacked the stones to do what must be done. Leto the Tyrant is the true savior of humanity. Really amazing how Herbert was able to write my favorite epic hero "messiah" story in Dune, and then completely deconstruct the messiah complex in the subsequent books.
Have read Dune a few times, but always got bored with Messiah. Finally finished it yesterday, and I think it sucks (in comparison to Dune, at least). Probably not going to continue the series.
Finished another reread today. I think Count Fenring is my favorite character. Dude's a fucking sleeper.
Great post. I’d also add the issue of “thinking machines” roles in our lives. Do we come to a point in time where we rely on computers too much? The way the Benefit Gesserit, and in later novels “the whores” use sex as a tool to manipulate men is fascinating to ponder as well.
As someone that has only seen the movie, it’s funny to think of it “getting weird” sometime after fat floating man with boils, blue glowing eyed spice junkies, floating intergalactic spice worm prophets etc
After a recent reread I liked God Emperor more than I did when I read it many years ago. Heretics is probably my second favorite, behind the original IMNSHO the whole series is pretty good to great. The shit is the stuff that was written ten years after his death that was supposed to flesh out his larger vision but was really just a pulpy cash grab
I think people consider the later novels weird because moving so far forward in time reminds us that nothing we are doing matters for the most part
Since football probably isn't coming back, this is about all I have to look forward to for 2020. Hope the release date isn't pushed
Box office: This is rated PCA-19. Me: What does that mean? Box office: You must show proof of COVID-19 antibodies to be admitted.
Same. I think WB moves Tenet to that spot and shifts this to 2021. I hope this makes enough $ to warrant the 2nd movie. Gonna be pissed if we only get the first half of the book.
Good call. Giving both Nolan and Villeneuve more time while still getting a movie out in a December when there’s no big Disney property then is a win for everyone. And I think the teenage girl crush on Chalamet will vault this movie into profitability.
Those are stillsuits. I’m now thinking the “armor” pictured in that earlier post on this page was regular military garb.
Is Brolin supposed to be Halleck? Trying to figure out what scene this might be... Maybe when Leto saves the crew of the Sandcrawler?
