Yeah, it’s kind of a “grass is always greener” situation. They seem like they have it all, but in actuality it’s not as easy as it seems. The bit about Jason taking the listerine shot was pretty shocking knowing his history. I hope that’s been the lone incident.
Just said the same thing to a friend. They've got a great public image both separately and as a couple, would've been easy to keep that kind of stuff under wraps. Major credit to them for opening up and showing the struggles even folks like them go through.
Overaseas is one of my favorite Isbell songs ever. It's definitely my favorite song on this record. He said that he wanted this record to have an 80s rock kinda feel to it and i can definitely notice that in Overseas, Running with Our Eyes Closed and It gets Easier. Just really strong electric guitar. I have said before itt but the guitar hook on Overseas is one of the best he's ever done. I guess we could have seen this coming when he started covering Dire Straits at a bunch of shows. And Letting you Go is just a classic country song. That one will get covered a million times.
After watching their quarantine YouTube series I don’t fault Jason at all for getting upset with her for playing the fiddle too loud. Her volume control was an issue throughout.
Maybe it’s me but “let’s find you a bottle of something good” seems like a weird way to handle a possibly relapsing alcoholic
Also it kinda sucks to read that he’s turning away from writing about his own life/experiences, I feel like most of his most powerful stuff is at least semi-autobiographical
I dunno. I think if you’re around that level of alcoholic/addict enough, telling them no or something similar isn’t possible after a certain point. Either they’re going to relapse on something good or they aren’t going to do it at all. I’m thankful Jason chose the latter.
I think they’ve clearly figured out how to handle their lives. No judgment here. I still can’t believe they both were so open. Pretty amazing interview.
It really was. I think the listerine incident was more of an accident than trying to hit the sauce. After reading the whole thing and see what they’ve posted done on the internet since makes me think that everything is fine. A humble reminder maybe.
I think it’s probably similar to what I’ve perceived happened with Ben Nichols and John McCauley. Writing about being a dad probably isn’t as exciting as doing blow in Australia with Justin Towns Earle. That doesn’t mean it can’t be great, just different.
She seems to be having hearing problems. There were times were Jason and Seth were playing guitar right next to her and she was complaining she couldn't hear them.
I have no idea why they were so open. Strange honestly. This is prolly the beginning of the end of a maybe the greatest run of records written and released in the last decade. Just a hunch
"I was going to do (Southeastern) with Ryan Adams. He was going to produce it. And then at the last minute, he pulled a Ryan Adams and backed out, probably because he heard the songs and was threatened by honesty." Ooof.
I cringed at that, too. I don’t know. I have a weird feeling about this record. Excited but at the same time preparing to be let down. The only artists I’ve ever heard downplay a record before they ever come out are Patterson/Cooley with The Unraveling (saying they both had writer’s block) and now Jason.
I would agree that this album is not my favorite of Jason's, but it still has some absolute bangers. And it's not remotely comparable to the Unraveling. The unraveling sucks ass compared to Reunions.
People who feel threatened by my stories, they call it political music because they want to put that in a box. It makes it easier to dismiss. None of this shit is political.
I get cutting ties with Adam's and saying he's a shitty guy and he did shitty things. This comment is weird to me though. Seems a bit revisionist.
I felt similarly. I imagine he’s bitter given what came out about Ryan and having defended him in the past, but Ryan played a pretty decent sized role in Jason getting sober and then getting back to the music life while staying sober. Just seems like punching down for no real reason at this point.
Southeastern Something More than Free Here we Rest Nashville Sound Reunions Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit Sirens of the Ditch
Exactly. In another article where he slams him, he said Ryan took him to rehab then took him on the road when he got out. Can't help but think him writing/recording chaos and clothes leads to a little extra anger.
they must have had a falling out recently. He has been a pretty vocal supporter of Phoebe Bridgers on social media and she absolutely hates Ryan Adamss' guts.
I thought Ryan tweeted something at John Mayer, cautioning a relationship because a friend will make it a song, about this song when it came out. I think he deleted it shortly after.
Lucinda Williams had a way different take on adams. She basically she said she has known him for a long time and he's one of those people who you care for even though he's fucked a lot of things up over the years. I think Isbell may have missed the dark side and maybe that's why he's so pissed/hurt.
Not on Big Colors, but Wednesdays, the second of what was supposed to be three albums. Jason was on there, as was Emmylou Harris.
I follow Koppelman on Twitter and he seems like a good dude, but he definitely fawns over celebrities that he’s “friends” with. I don’t know why I’m posting that here, but it was on my mind, so there ya go.
the Men in Blazers interview with Rog is great too https://open.spotify.com/episode/2BfTJkykXY0K9dFsA8EpC7?si=xX8G5pN1TzWctqciKjsOyA
