So the difference in price between the Air with the 1.1 i5 and 16 GB RAM and the Pro with the 1.4 i5 and 16 GB RAMis only $100. Putting aside all the other extra the Pro gets, is that alone worth paying $100 more for?
When I started the new job back at March I had to use a PC for the first time in like 8 years and it was fucking awful. If my 2012 MacBook has any life in it when I eventually get one of these new MacBooks, I’m just going to start using my 2012 at work instead.
one thing I saw is the $1800 13” MBP is the cheapest model to have the new 10th gen processors and faster RAM. according to reddit threads, it may be worthwhile to deck out a MBA to the entry level MBP price and have better performance. I can’t believe Apple is still putting a 3 year old processor in the base model.
I would think a MBP with a better processor and a few other things - Touch Bar, wide color range, Dolby Atmos - for only $100 (that’s upgrading it to 16 GB RAM) is probably a better deal. But I also don’t really know what the difference in the processors are. I don’t know if I even want the Touch Bar but it’s not like that’s something that can just be adding in later like you can by swapping in more RAM.
Feels like I should upgrade from my mid-2012 13” MBP because these new ones seem reasonably affordable.
If you read/hear something that sways your opinion, let me know. I go back and forth on it every time I read about it. My current 13” MBP still works fine, but it routinely bogs down and I can’t even launch the Spotify app anymore. I basically keep playing out the string until I find the right time.
I am slowly getting back into running and am looking at these. Have any of you used them for running or other physical activity? How do they manage with sweat and staying in the ear?
They don't move for me basically at all. That was always my biggest issue with previous headphones, keeping them in place during a run and having them continue to function when covered in sweat. So far, so good on that front.
I use them exclusively for running. Other than the previously mentioned charging and connectivity issues, I couldn’t be happier. No other issues at all.
I ordered my new Macbook Air last week. I nearly considered canceling my order for the new Pro. But the more I think about it. I don't need a Macbook Pro.
I got the 2018 when it was brand new and absolutely love it. First Mac computer I’ve ever owned and haven’t had a single issue.
I’ve read a few things speculating they’re gonna come out w a 14” next year w the 10th gen or even their own chip they’ve been working on in the base model. I have a 2011 MBP that still works really well (after upgrading the RAM and a SSD). However I’ve been waiting for the new keyboard style and other stuff to come out. I was gonna jump on the new 13” when it came out. But I’m considering holding out again. I’ve waited this long. I’d hate to finally pull the trigger on the last model of the old chassis before they completely redesign it.
Really wish Find My worked better for AirPods. Apple thinks they’re at SafeLite ten miles away but they’re probably somewhere in my house.
so thinking about going up to 16 gb ram in my old mbp from 2012(have 8 gb currently, but definitely starting to drag over the last year or so). found this one on ifixit, is there something better out there or cheaper (Ive never really shopped for ram) https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/Ma...2-Memory-Maxxer-RAM-Upgrade-Kit/IF163-059?o=1
Bought the Airpods Pro to replace my lost Airpods. The noise cancellation is impressive. Tried it out by hitting my hand on the table and I can barely hear it. Transparency seems cool too, will have to test it out when my wife starts conversation with me when I'm listening to something.
What are you working on when it drags? If it's slow to load programs ect, you might just need a SSD upgrade (Assuming you still have the original mechanical HD) 99 bucks seems a little high for 16GB of ram. Id check amazon, then do a search for that brand to see if it has good reviews or not. That's what I did when I upgraded. Dont remember what I got though
I changed to an ssd a few years back, so I probably should have been more clear. not necessarily a lag on programs or anything, but I can see in the activity monitor that even just doing normal-ish viewing/music/browsing is maxing out the memory.
There is nothing wrong with RAM being used. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. RAM is like your work desk, if you have a 24" by 60" surface, are you going to keep everything in one tidy corner or spread stuff around so you can quickly access it. If the programs aren't slowing down, your RAM isn't completely maxed, or the CPU is hitting 100% usage, then there's nothing to worry about IMO.
Have had no issues with my series 5 watch until this week. Suddenly the watch shuts down completely when it gets to roughly 30% battery life. Then when I put it on the charger it basically starts charging from where it left off instead of 0. Extremely annoying and no clue what the deal is, though I've seen it mentioned on a few other forums.
Hi. Hello. Posting while shitting and using my brand new MacBook Air. I love it. I went with the base model and upgraded to an i5 processor, it's exactly what I needed. I'm playing around with some free photo editing software, which I know nothing about but something I'm interested in.
New AirPods coming in September? I have originals going on 2.5+ years. I have them in almost constantly throughout the workday. Battery is getting bad on them and I'm terrible at recharging and end up having to pull out the wired ones to let them charge for a spell throughout the day. Don't really care about the money, just don't want to drop $250 for Pro's that are going to be ancient in a few months.
“Service battery” just came up on my 2017 mbp now the question is, wait to take it in whenever that becomes possible, or just upgrade to the new one now
It just means your battery life is going to suck. I have the original battery from my 2011MBP. The battery is really bad. Last maybe 2.5 hrs. Personally, I wouldn’t spend money to get a new battery. I’d wait it out until you want to upgrade
I just replaced my battery this week after 2500 cycles, I feel like I have a whole new computer thats kind of what got me searching on ram the other day. I talked myself down though.
yeah i like it a lot. typing and trackpad interface both work really well and open up lots of functionality personally not going to be a laptop replacement for me, but it has been really helpful as a second device for distance teaching
Two things, if you are using CarPlay with the Ford Sync systems and are having issues controlling the volume of audio, its a common problem which was caused by an update Waze made. They are working to fix it. Its defaulting to change the Prompt (siri) volume instead of the normal audio. A quick reboot of Sync or the phone has fixed it for me. Second, has anyone figured out how to update the Carplay dashboard with the maps widget to use Waze or Google Maps instead of Apple Maps? I know 13.4 was supposed to release the ability to use custom maps but haven't seen a way to use it and its been several weeks.
I have an iMac mid 2010 that still works but is crazy slow. It’s tapped out now with 2 phones and now my daughter using her iPad to backup photos and stuff. Looking for options here. I have multiple external drives I could back up and remove but I need the latest best practice for photo backups. (I’m not very interested in cloud based stuff unless it’s on my network as a personal cloud) I am seeing I can buy a 2 TB ssd for my iMac as a kit for $149. Has anyone done this on an older iMac? I’m also considering getting a macMini instead. thanks!
Just pay the extra $2.99 a month for using iCloud for photo backups IMO. It’s very hassle free (for me at least, so far) and you don’t have to manage shit. Just make sure your family has strong passwords for their iCloud accounts — which they already should.
I edited my other post to say this. Apple’s cloud backups are reasonably priced IMO and it handles all the iPhone/computer backups behind the scenes for you. You don’t have any hardware to manage. I use and would recommend BackBlaze as another cloud based backup service. I have a Synology RAID at home but you really need some kind of off-site backup of your data in case of theft, fire, etc.
I was looking at Amazon too. I have Prime and they have a backup service now. Unlimited for photos but capped for videos. Thanks for the replies.
Tell me more about this kit, please. I have been considering fixing up my old MacBook Pro that is slow as molasses now with the spinning wheel of death at every turn.
Had an iMac that I moved everything over to an external HD and it worked like a charm. I forget the exact steps it took, but I was able to figure it out via YouTube.
