Molly was purely a victim of being a dumpster fire class. Mollymauk the Warlock probably would have been just fine.

So when we got the shelter in place order I suggested we take our local table game to Roll20. Everyone was excited. I was a little stressed because Roll20 just isn't as much fun, especially as the DM, as a live table.

Everyone got their characters imported and we did a test session to mess around with the front end.

One of my players, who is a nearly 60 year old dude with some mental decline, was clueless on the front end and needed his hand held the entire time (with repetitions of things we'd already taught him). This made me a lot less excited to play.

I'm as busy as I've ever been in my professional life and old dude isn't working at all. He nags me a couple of times a week to set a game so we can play. Between life being busy and my apprehension of him being the anchor - I've been dragging my feet.

Yesterday he sent a passive aggressive text saying he's not excited about playing anymore and is dropping out of the group until we can play live.

    We're playing, minus one, tonight.

My dad/husband duties killed TMB DnD game pretty quick. I think when my kids all get to middle/high school and don’t need to be put to bed, hang out with dad on Friday/Saturday nights, should get easier

Had probably the greatest session I've ever run last night. Ended the session on a reveal that had multiple players with their jaws dropped or hands on their head. God it felt good

Not sure if you are still looking for ideas, but Wizards is putting out daily free mini campaign guides on their website. You could probably take those and smash them together for an amazing campaign. I’ve been collecting them over the past 2 months every day just to have a stockpile of ideas.

Holy shit at the first Campaign Ep 35.

Percy interrogating Lady Briarwood and fighting with the demon who gave him his powers.

Edit: Of course, Keyleth opens her mouth and ruins all the suspense and atmosphere building up

Big season 2 spoiler, more mild season 1 spoiler

Matt making Artagon the Traveler was fucking amazing. I wonder if he had that planned from the very start. However as I'm almost done with season 1 (just started episode 113), the idea that a guy who choked Vax to death with his bare hands for fun is hanging out with a little girl makes that relationship a lot more creepy.

    Season 1 finale

Man, that episode really delivered....what an epic fight. When I saw the episode went 5 hours I was sure that it was probably full of a lot of fluff but man that was non-stop action. That fight had some of the most lucky and unlucky rolls I've ever seen and I think almost all of them had something to do with Scanlan. The players looked actually emotionally spent by the end of that fight. Also loved Joe shitting on the big happy ending there and blowing everyone away.

I always thought Bards were the shittiest class in D&D but Sam changed my mind. Over the course of the season, Scanlan was pretty clearly the MVP of that group.

Was an amazing episode. I watched it live and stayed up to watch, was exhausted the next day.

the more I learn/play/watch it seems like spell casters are only limited by the creativity of the player and have a high skill cap. Seems really easy to just cast fireball every turn or actually be amazing at the class with the right creative use of abilities.

still love hack and slash rage/reckless/great weapon master Barb tho

Want to say how bogus it is when DMs make an entire group do a skill check instead of making it a group check. 4 people roll 18s for a stealth check but one person rolls an 8 and blows it. No matter how skilled a party is, if you make them roll enough someone is going to miss the DC

ok i forgot this thread existed.

currently working halfway into episode 93 of C2. really looking forward to being caught up when they come back so i can watch live.

recently, i took a six week road trip with a friend. he was working through C1 while i was doing C2, so we decided to start C2 while we drove. ended up getting to ep 33 before it was over, could have done more but i didnt think to start downloading episodes until the last week.

anyway, molly kind of sucked and taliesin really really struggled with positioning as him often trying to make plays that were far too bold for such a low level. dont know if he did the same with percy but he definitely doesnt with duece.

We've discussed this many times that Molly sucked. The class sucked and he had no clue how to play him. He did a lot better with Percy both as a character and within the game mechanics of DnD.

he and i share a lot of similarities in that we never want to play things in the way we are expected to. gunslinger was a new subclass but they clearly had put more thought into it. blood hunter is, theoretically, fine but was incredibly unpolished at the time and he played it like a dumbass.

Because Dumps and Dragons was the first group to ever have 2 bards in the group does anyone know can you stack bardic inspiration?

You can't stack blesses, so I would guess you can't stack bardic inspirations. If this was happening at my table, I would allow the player to carry 2 separate bardic inspirations concurrently, but they can only use one of them at a time. No double boosting a roll.

it seems like a way to break the game, even at relatively low levels you could have a character rolling a check and adding 2d8 to that roll as well.

Having finished crit role season 1, now I kind of want to create a neutral evil bard that only sings Misfits and Glen Danzig songs to give inspiration

It would break a game, that's why you shouldn't allow anyone to expend multiple inspirations on one roll

So with all the down time lately I've been playing with this character creator app I like... 20200616_100043.jpg
... and have been coming up with a bunch of characters. Basically I've created my own party, complete with varying degrees of back stories and how most of them would know each other.
Kind of sucks because I can't realistically play 8 characters at once lol If I were more creative I'd write a book.

Kharas Thunderhammer, hill dwarf forge cleric
(the character I'm currently playing as in the session I'm putting my kids thru). Debating multi-classing with fighter/eldritch knight so I can get multiple attacks and I like the weapon bond feature. Feels like Thor chucking Mjölnir around. Haven't figured out story wise why he'd multi-class but I like it for gameplay, and still working on connection to the overall group.
Horace "Horse" Hornswaggle, halfling berserker barbarian
One of the flavoring aspects I like for him is that he giggles when he rages. Drinker, womanizer (like 'em bigger, particularly half-orcs are a soft spot), you can use your imagination how the "Horse" nickname comes in. Gets shitty drunk one night and is snatched up by slavers, which is how he becomes friends with...
    Shenn Brekaar, dragonborn Vengeance paladin
lots of backstory ideas here. I like the idea of him being a PLATINUM dragonborn with what looks like slightly different fire breath, because he doesn't know it's radiant fire (1d6 radiant and 1d6 fire instead of 2d6 fire). Basically have the story be something to the effect of him being born platinum scaled and his parents kind of freaking out because they've never heard of it happening before, so they take him to a seer who casts a spell on him that disguised his scale color as brass because they fear what his true coloring might mean and that evil (or even "good") beings might come for him to either use him or kill him. On the way home they are attacked by slavers led by ogres and he is raised as a slave from very young and is mockingly called simply "Dragon". The slavers figure out quickly he can only breathe fire once per rest, so he is always muzzled (causing some facial scarring) and is frequently held down and forced to expend his flame to start the cooking fire for the slavers.
As he approaches adulthood the slavers capture Horace and the two become friends. One day a smaller group of the slavers take Horace, "Dragon", and a few others on a short trip away from the main slaver group for whatever reason. After "Dragon" uses his fire breath for the cooking fire, Horace and a half-orc slave girl are caught being flirtatious with each other and in spiteful jealousy one of the slavers kills the girl. Horace of course goes into a rage (giggling maniacally) and attacks. "Dragon", having learned of Bahamut from Horace, says a quick prayer for help to the platinum dragon. He is still muzzled and wearing wrist manacles with a chain connecting them. As he angrily struggles to free himself while praying to Bahamut he breathes fire AGAIN, searing its way thru the muzzle and the chain connecting the manacles. As he starts fighting along side Horace he hears a voice in his head speaking Draconic call him "Chain Breaker", trying to get his attention. Since he grew up a slave he never learned his people's language, so he simply hears "Shenn Brekaar" (I'm saying that is Draconic for Chain Breaker) and later takes that as his new name. After fighting to freedom he has a battleaxe made from the thigh bone of one of the ogres they killed.
He still wears the manacles on his wrists. When he burned thru the chain it left a scorch mark on each that he swears looks like the symbol of Bahamut and it is his reminder of his vow of Vengeance against slavers of all kinds. He believes Bahamut answered his prayer and granted him the 2nd breath of fire to help him free himself and is now devoted to the platinum dragon as a paladin.
I also like the idea of about a half foot of chain still hanging off the manacles, but for some reason it doesn't make any noise.
Durron Voss, drow elf wizard (leaning toward War Mage)
Drow hierarchy is female based. When Durron begins to show a strong aptitude for the arcane arts, his two older sisters become jealous and frame him as a follower of Eilistraee (daughter of Lolth whose followers long to return to the surface and seek peace with the surface dwellers). Durron escapes into exile rather than be executed. While in exile on the surface he happens upon the small slaver group holding Horace and Shenn. Durron assists in freeing them and it is in fact his voice, using the message cantrip, that Shenn hears calling him Chain Breaker. Durron also begins teaching Shenn Draconic.

Not sure how Kharas fits in with this group but he could either come across them near death after the battle against the slavers and heal them or as a Clan Crafter background maybe he fashioned the ogre thigh bone into Shenn's battleaxe. Possibly both.
Allurhana "Allura" Nastacia, wood elf ranger (monster slayer)
Mother killed during a giant invasion when she was young. Learns ways of the woods traveling with merchant father. After a bit over 100 years her father was a human woman and has another daughter. Allura watches from afar until deciding to build a relationship as her half-sister reaches teenage years.
    D'Jarra Starbreeze, half-elf trickster rogue
Full elven name D'Jarramarta Nastacia (was actually able to create/translate the last name using the elf family names in the Players Handbook), goes by the common translation since she grew up among the human cities. Trains as a dancer growing up, eventually secretly joining local thieves guild thanks to relationship with...
Timmoffry Pauldon, human divine soul sorcerer
will multi-class as rogue, probably assassin. The divine soul is kind of a leftover from originally thinking he'd be an aasimar (likely starting out as fallen), but instead opted for human variant so he could start out with the war caster feat. Basically what I want with him is a dual-dagger-wielding, stealthy, sneak attack, and then quicken an invisibility or misty step/dimension for type spell, plus whatever other cool magic.
Back story is something along the lines of his sorcerer powers emerge while a crooked tax collector is hassling his parents. He gets pissed and accidentally injures the tax guy, killing his "muscle", and tax guy flees. Kid and parents are all thrown in jail. While imprisoned the boy and his abilities are discovered by the local thieves guild who coordinate to break him out along with some of their own operatives. He's raised by the thieves guild but yearns to redeem himself and his family as well as free them from prison.
    Nyarro, tabaxi monk
Orphan growing up on the streets becomes friends with Timmoffry. Gets caught by the local authorities as a youth and his punishment is being given to the local monastery. During his time there proves himself worthy to be trained as a monk.

7 episodes into c1 now. production quality is getting a little better.

i think its sam or liam that comments 15 or so episodes into c2 that c2 was already much more emotionally deep than c1 and i can definitely see it. c1 these guys are just voice actors playing d&d, by c2 they are professional d&d players. also, i miss jester.

Matt said one of the things he wanted to do in campaign 2 was take out this kind of generic mechanic where all orcs are always evil and give nuance to the game. And now look at what he has created on Critical Role. Something that is even greater and more compelling than campaign 1 which was a phenomenon. Critical Role shits on the idea that without evil races you can't have a game.
