Makes sense as he was the only center from the team not on the doc

which even friendly sports writers of the era say was more a negative than a positive as its all he did to the detriment to the rest his game

Ron Harper not getting a single mention was weird considering he was interviewed.

I think the doc fucked up in not doing a single thing on the Bulls' defense during that era. It was incredible and they could have done an entire episode on that, and Harper was a key part there.

Agree there. Rodman probably got too much coverage but he was an absolute star for that team. More people could tell you who he was based on a picture than they could Pippen. A lot of that was due to his flamboyant personality but he was still a massive star on that team. You can't tell the story of that team without acknowledging that.

Part of the reason Isiah got so much shit after walking out on the Bulls in ECF in 1991 was because of the Bird comments. Hell they flew Isiah out to LA to do a presser with Bird (after the Pistons were eliminated) before Gm1 of the 1987 finals between Celtics/Lakers

Defense isn't a fun story line, especially for TV. Harper had a huge hand in winning championships with the Bulls and Lakers, lot's of people think of him as a Phil guy. Triangle obviously never has a true PG, so that definitely hurts him.

You said his numbers were way down and they only brought him back bc they had no other options. He still led the league in rebounding. He wasnt bad by any means.

Rodman was great and had a story , Kerr had a story and hit the big shots. What the fuck were they going to segment Kukoc with? His story was already displayed in episode 3-4.

Ignoring that he was a rock star in that team would be silly. There were 3 stars. Jordan, Pippen, Rodman.

    Understood

I'm not sure why you're dying on this hill and acting like Rodman was reliable every night, or why you can't acknowledge that the Bulls wouldn't have put up with Rodman's shit if they had any other option.

Rodman was really good when he cared. He just didn't care all the time, which everyone knows was a problem. It was in 97 according to pretty much everyone. It was less of a problem in 96. The doc goes into great detail of him not caring frequently in 98.

If you weren't around to watch it live, I dont think you are qualified to say how the story should be told. Kukoc wasn't one of the stars. The 3 stars were covered in depth and everyone else was touched on. Watching the league a lot today doesn't change that.

and my point is you're blinded by the media narratives more than their actual impact in aggregate to argue rodman was dramatically more important than kukoc

Not saying he didn't have issues. I just find him to be more important to that run than Kukoc, who was right there with Longley as a 3rd scoring option.

Kukoc was nice and fun to watch especially as a ballhandler with length, but he averaged 13/4/4 those three years. Respectable numbers obviously, but he was always the fourth wheel behind MJ/Pip/Rodman. Rodman slid into the Grant role from the first threepeat; he just swapped better defense and rebounding for the baseline jumper. NBC used to run promos with the three of them that said "Superman...Batman...and Rodman."

Yeah, Rodman wasn't an offensive performer, but he led the league in rebounding all three years and was first team all defense with MJ and Pippen one of those years. He was the primary defender on Kemp and Mailman in the Finals and was given credit for being a general annoyance to the Mailman who obviously was playing at a MVP caliber level those years.

Did not expect a Toni Kukoc crusade tonight. I don't think Rodman was necessarily "dramatically more important" than Kukoc, but it's not exactly rocket science to figure out why a documentary would give Rodman more screen time.

They never hit on Jerry Sloan but what a wild life he's had. Sad to hear he's not doing well (dementia).

After retiring from the Bulls he took a job as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Evansville, but quit after five days. The team's plane crashed and killed the entire team except for one player who didn't make the trip because he was injured...but then that player was killed in a car crash two weeks later. :ohdear:

bulls don’t beat the sonics without rodman and kukoc would’ve been a star if he played 10 years later

this is a super weird argument because both players were so important in different ways. kukoc overpassed and wasn’t consistent on D and Rodman’s D and rebounding started and sustained so many crucial runs throughout the playoffs

Didn't they spend the a good part of an earlier episode talking about how Rodman stepped into the void left by Pippen and was the key to the Bulls finding their groove again in the last season? I feel like they went into detail about how integral he was to the team.

my entire argument is that their import to team success wasn't in any stratosphere as disparate as their time given in the doc would make you think

never that kukoc was MORE important in totality

  39. rickyrubio4life

If you think that they were relatively similar in importance, why would you possibly be confused about Dennis Rodman getting more screen time while he was going on midseason benders to Vegas with Carmen Electra and skipping Finals practices to be part of the nWo?

It may have been mentioned, but the low scoring games in the 90s is hilarious compared to now. 1998 Finals game 1 was 79-79 going into OT. That's like halfway thru the 3rd quarter nowadays.

edit add on: I spoke too soon and forgot the Jazz only scored 54 in game 3.

Do most folks from Louisiana claim him or turn the other way? He really is a piece of shit and on top of that he wore fucking Apex sneakers, Apex.

That twirl celebration was possibly the whackest thing you could do after hitting a game winning shot.

    Access > Integrity

Can’t believe they put fucking Pearl Jam there, know your audience.

Agreed. I was hoping for some illuminating footage, most everything was a refresher but there was enough newness there to amp it up. Him on the hotel room couch smoking the cigar lamenting his fame, playing quarters w/ the security guards, Hornets series before Gm 3 smoking a cigar in the locker room about his shit talking philosophy. The little things help to contextualize Jordan to the general public that weren’t as locked in during that era.

Assume the Pearl Jam inclusion was due to Eddie Vedder's Chicago roots and huge Bulls fandom, along with the fact that the song was Present Tense to go along with the talk of MJ always being in the moment. In those ways the choice was topical. I don't know if that's an old or new PJ song.
