Thankfully the wife is so paranoid about Covid that she ordered herself chocolates from Malley’s and said that’s all she wants. I’m going to get her a card from the boy too because I’m not dense, but that’s it. Godspeed gents, it’s been a ride.

Boy #2 born today at 1240am, at home. Peak part of labor in about an hour. I was ready to deliver myself, then the midwife showed up just in time to put gloves on and catch him.

We had planned on a potential home birth from the beginning, then the pandemic solidified things

had a proud dad moment with my 3.5 year old. He got a Strider balance bike on his second birthday and has always scooted around on it fine. but he was always reluctant to put his feet up on the bars so he could actually ride it how it's designed. It doesn't help that my driveway is very flat and the road i live on is too busy for him to really practice on. but lately he has just been going around in circles gliding sticking his feet out.

Yesterday we went to his grandmothers house and they have a perfect hill for learning on. Just a long gradual decrease. He made it all the way down the hill with his feet up and he was so proud when he finally did it. It just clicked for him and he made it look easy. Such an awesome feeling watching your kid learn achieve something that he's been working on.

I've been wondering how this would go down with our 16 month old. She had basically been in only two homes/buildings since daycare closed in early March up until this weekend when we went to my sisters house on Saturday. It probably took her about 45 minutes to get settled in/comfortable but she did get there. Definitely been a huge change as she used to go out to restaurants, grocery store, Costco, our friends houses, etc all the time with us. Glad to hear it went alright with daycare for you.

Anyone else's toddler discover those shows on Amazon that are basically the lowest budget cartoons ever? They look like a middle school animantion project?

    Super truck
    Tiny trucks
    Dino the dinosaur

There's like 100 of them. They're all identical. But they have bright colors so he chooses them over real shows.

lol yes! he will stare at the weird monster truck cartoon for hours if we let him.

Blaze the Monster truck and Paw Patrol are evidently too scary for my kid. I guess it's whenever they encounter a "bad guy" he gets a little scared and runs over to the other side of the room kinda watching cautiously. We had to nix it and now he's back to Daniel Tiger.

One thing I did a few months back and want to do again is take a couple weeks and not say no to anything my kids ask. When I say that I mean that’s reasonable. Not like buy me this or can I have ice cream or stuff that is just not good parenting. I mean not saying no to things like dad let’s go outside, play legos with me, etc. many times we as parents say no to these little things because we are tired from the work day or want to keep watching a game or episode, etc.

It’s very rewarding as a parent to jump in a 100% with your children and not say no.

This will probably be my usual vomit word-salad, but getting annoying with a few things right now that's probably just normal behavior.

Our daughter will be 3 in a few days and I'd say in the past six months that her tantrums have gotten a little worse but a LOT more complicated and difficult to deal with. She thankfully isn't really violent, although the other day she did break something for the first time in anger, but it's become more difficult to talk to her about why she can't get something or has to do something. I think around 2 when she started getting tantrums it was very obvious that she was upset that she just simply didn't get a thing she wanted or made to do something she didn't, but as she has gotten more vocal she realllllly likes to argue back and forth by repeatedly asking for whatever it is she wants (or saying she doesn't want to do). It's even more particular where things have to be a very certain way, like I don't want to go this specific direction when we're out walking. I assume it's just her basically wanting to have LOTS of control over whatever it is we're doing and wanting to assert independence, it drives me crazy and you'd probably say it was emotionally abusive if she was an adult doing this.

I'm guessing most of you have noticed the trend in tantrums for your kids? I can't find a lot of detailed information after googling, just that tantrums generally become "worse" between 2 and 3 and that they usually become infrequent around 4. I'm mostly stressed because I know you can't give in and I often can't get her to do something she refuses unless I really raise my voice (my wife gets pissed at me because I'm "yelling") .My wife, I think, gives in a little too often and is too nice and basically waits it out. The other thing that often works is the doing the "well if you want me to play the blanket hide game with you then you have to eat some dinner." However I've read conflicting information that this is helpful if they're in the middle of a tantrum.

I think a big difference we've noticed lately is that she's become more manipulative, she won't necessarily throw a tantrum but she knows how to get out of certain things. She's not fully potty trained but the month or so she was out of daycare we made some big progress. One thing that we've struggled with at home is that she refuses to poop and only goes in the middle of her night in the pull-up that she still needs to wear (peeing isn't a problem). However in the past couple of weeks at daycare she is pooping, but still not generally well at home. It could be a difference in the toilets between home and daycare, but I think she knows we've struggled with this and after we put her down for bed she'll scream that she has to poop. The wife or I will go in there and sit her on the potty since we don't want her to keep crapping in her pull-up, but she'll basically want to sit on the potty for several minutes and have us read more books so lately I've just been outright refusing to address it.

Yeah. It’s frustrating. My step son takes after his mother. I’ve have learned to be very selective in my battles. I don’t give in on certain things he wants but letting him feel some semblance of control helps out. I have to realize if somethings are just bad or if I just feel inconvenienced. I hardly ever raise my voice so when I do get stern he knows he fucked up and won’t do it again.

Yeah my son is 3.5 and throws some pretty royal tantrums. We’ve tried a variety of things to deal with but usually just make him go to his room until he calms down. He’ll squeal at the top of his lungs for a while then calm down.

Uggggh I mention to a family member my son discovered blippi and suddenly a blippi doll came in the mail. I'm gonna hide it for a while.

I'm sure grandparents buying too many things I don't want without asking the parents is normal, yes?

When you guys go visit grandparents or go on trips, do you all bunk up in one room? or do you try to make sure your kids have their own room to sleep? we are going to my mom's house (on a lake) for memorial day and i'm getting shit from my brother (no kids)for not wanting to give up my kids room so some of our friends can come too., and he thinks my 3 year old and 1 year old should sleep in the same room as us.

Theoretically he is right. There is plenty of space for an air mattress and pack n play, but the oldest especially has never slept great. And whenever we have all packed in the same room before, it has led to us waking up 2-3 times in the night to help the toddler, then waking up the baby, etc. Additionally naptime would be much more challenging and we'd have to block out the whole room for chunks during the day while the baby takes her two naps. Whereas if they have their own room there is a very low chance of either waking up at all at night. There is also a large closet in the room where we would probably put the pack n play in. Which, you know, does the job but you are still sticking your baby in a closet.

AITA for not wanting to give up my kids' room at their grandmother's?

As the one with the kids, I think you make every reasonable effort to accommodate the other parties without kids. Until you live through it, nobody gives a fuck about the challenges children bring.

My sister had kids 6-7 years before me. There still is a lot of resentment about how those years played out. I wish I was a little more flexible then and I wish she was a little less rigid.

How old are you and your brother?

I feel like having kids and going to visit their grandparents is something that doesn't involve your friends
In lake house situations, friends that don't have kids kind of become the outcasts

We are twins. 30 years old. We still have the same friends. My mom and her boyfriend just bought the house a couple of years ago and it’s their primary home, not like it’s solely a vacation house. It’s just on a lake so we treat it like one.

That’s sort of how my sister (and mom backing her up) was. Because of the kids, they got priority over everyone else for all family gatherings. All plans (sleeping arrangements, vacation locations, eating schedules, activities, etc) ran through her family for like 5 years and it definitely caused problems.

So apparently 18 Month sleep regression is a thing? Our baby has always been a worse sleeper than his all star older brother, but this is a new low. Wakes up between 4-6 every morning, trying to transition from 2 day naps to 1 but he wakes up after a couple hours and needs more. This is brutal.

wife did the 5 min checks from 4-5, I’m currently doing them til 6. He’s already got all molars, probably getting canines, our kids get teeth early for some reason, but no other ideas what is going on.
