Has anyone used a thunder shirt with their dog? Sooie has horrible anxiety when there’s a thunderstorm and we’ve looked at them but not sure if they’re a good option or not.

Follow-up to my own post. Derby passed away on Friday. Overall, she did great and mostly lived a healthy life with all things considered from this post in October until basically a week ago. Fluid filled her abdomen and her heart (we learned that on Friday) and out of no where she lost most use of her legs last Wednesday and we knew the end was near. With Covid, the vet let us take her home fro 30-minutes and saw goodbye there and then I brought her back for the end which was tougher than I expected.

My reason for the post is to see when did people get a new dog? Cleaning out the house over the weekend (dog beds, treats, toys, etc) was difficult but I decided I'd want to start with fresh stuff whenever we make that journey.

Pretty much every shelter has been cleared out of dogs in Chicago (which is awesome) and though I loved Derby, I don't know if I wanted to do another pitbull with dog socialization issues which seems be the last adoptable candidates. I look at boxer breeders because they have good reviews in being around small children. Just a weird time as I have walked that dog every morning before work for the last 10 years and not to have that in my morning activities is strange. Now just can't decide if we wait weeks, months or longer to get a new dog. With working from home for the next month or longer, this should be a good time to adopt and train.

Sorry for the long post. Just lots of thoughts to get out on the topic.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Derby was a wonderful dog and you gave him a beautiful life.

On boxers, I would just be really strict on training because the wilder they get the more likely they are to snap at a small child. I know there are calm and sweet boxers on here but I’ve seen otherwise sometimes.

And honestly it is all up to you on when you get another dog imo. Just take your time and don’t rush it because it isn’t fair to the new dog/puppy if you are not fully done grieving Derby

Sorry for you loss. Took me almost a year and a half to get another when Sam passed. I have his favorite toy (Big Kong Chew) put away and in retirement. I am using the same crate, but Teddy has his own blanket. I have Sam’s old blanket draped over the crate for the smell of another dog and I like to think Sam’s helping me calm him down at night with the blanket. I still get choked up about Sam when I think about him and look at old photos and videos, but I’m at the point where I’m glad I have another opportunity to give a rescue dog a chance at a great life.

Lola’s health has steadily declined over the past 2 weeks in several ways. Tried to take her on a walk yesterday morning and her back legs gave out on her, it was the sign to us she is ready. I have basically spent the last 36 hours just laying with her on her bed downstairs, petting her, feeding her whatever she wants to eat. Slept with her on the floor last night and will do so again tonight.

We found a vet that will come to our house and take her body. We have an appointment for tomorrow night. I can’t remember ever crying like I have over the past 36 hours.

Sorry to hear about the recent health troubles of the TMB pack, but glad to know the pups have thoughtful and loving owners looking after them. If you don't mind sharing, I'd like to get some feed back on the timing of when you had your dog fixed and their general health.

Trudy is 11 weeks and I've been thinking about when to have her fixed, pre or post heat. Our vet recommends letting her go through one heat for the health benefits and I tend to agree. However, my neighbors are irresponsible dog owners and their adult, unneutered, pit-mix they took in as a mature rescue is constantly getting out and roaming off leash. This dog is the bain of my existence; massive turds in my yard, incessant barking, and aggressive displays on multiple occasions. The dog was off-leash and made a mock charge at our termite guy last week, termite guy said "If I'd had my pistol I would of shot that dog." Anyway, the point is my nightmare scenario is turning my back for two seconds during Trudy's heat and Cujo next door busting through and fucking our lives up. I've had the conversation with the neighbor, he's well meaning and agreed to help and be on high alert during her heat, but I have zero confidence in his ability to follow through.

Also, I've never dealt with a dog going through heat. So please share your experiences When did you have your dog fixed? How do you think it impacted their overall well being? Would you do it differently if you could? Any helpful advice is appreciated and Trudy thanks you.

Next foster arrives tomorrow named Cinder. Apparently was very friendly when she got to the shelter in Texas but got really withdrawn in the kennels so they want her out of that environment ASAP so she is coming straight to us.

This is from the rescue where my wife volunteers. Someone saw this dog get thrown from a moving car in Nashville. They stopped and got him and contacted Proverbs, who took him to the vet. Unfortunately, the dog passed away this morning/last night. Fuck people.

It's funny/sad, the side that her leg was removed on, her little belly hangs down and flaps around

She's in bed sleeping now. Seems to be OK getting around. I'll carry her up and down the steps for thr next two weeks. She's been good going down before surgery. Up was difficult

So I brought my dogs to the vet in a new town for the first time last week. One of my labs has an ear infection he got the week before, he doesn't get them often but maybe 1x a year or so. Vet tells me he has a food allergy and gives me a list of the two ingredient or so grain free foods to switch to. They cost over 2x what he eats now and after a previous vet had said to stop with the grain free food, I kinda Yao faced her over the phone when she was discussing the pups exams. She said, and I'm barely paraphrasing, that God made dogs be able to shake their heads hard enough to clean out any water, so his ear infection was probably from a food allergy. I've probably had 4-5 vets see my dogs since I've had them for various ear issues or whatever, never did one say it was a food allergy.

Today I told my parents about all that, and they decided to Google the girl just for the hell of it. Turns out her vet degree is from Ross university (a for profit school that was formed so the founder's nephew or something could get a medical degree since he couldn't get in anywhere else) and she's also a certified dog chiropractor. They want to see my dog again Tuesday as a follow up, and I'm kinda thinking that's the last time we go to that vet.

I’m just saying there are only two reasons dogs get ear infections. Vets are like snowflakes, each one is different and has their own way of doing things. I’ve seen good and bad vets from Ross, I’ve seen good and bad vets from big name vet schools like TAMU or CSU.

If you don’t think it is the food, and they get into other shit like lakes, pools, dirty shit, then maybe just clean their ears once a week or twice a month with some square gauze and some ear cleaner and make sure its dry afterwards

my moms labs used to get them and she would put plain Greek yogurt in their ears. It’s a yeast infection, so that’s why the vet is saying feed them grain free food. Water + heat + grain = yeast over growth

With the possible link between heart problems and grain free foods I'll never be going back to that route
