Nebraska AD Bill Moos with a quote that kinda pisses me off: "I'm of the belief that if the state says we're good to go, if it's permissible within our locale, let these fans come enjoy the Huskers and major college football," he said. "They're adults. If they're worried about the prospect of getting this virus, that can be a personal decision."
because if you come to the game and people spread the virus, it is then more likely that essential workers, community members, kids, etc. get the virus. It isn't like people are going to go to a game then quarantine for 14 days
those were the days. They easily have the longest playoff drought in the NHL. Sad times for the franchise
he then added “And if they are adults and have a history of pedophile behavior, they can play RB for us #GBR”
I imagine most want to play as they’re young and tired of being at home. Based on the athletes I’ve interacted with at my job.
That makes me feel better about it. Still risky but at least it doesn’t have the element of a master forcing slaves to harvest the cotton so he can get paid
I will also say I’ve only spoken to a small fraction of the athletes and I shouldn’t have really used that as a wide sweeping barometer. It was also more in the context of getting back to campus as opposed to playing football.
Its really not that risky for the kids which is why you see scenes like we did from the Ozarks this past weekend. It is very dangerous for their parents and grandparents and likely a lot of their coaches and support staff.
how would they feel about playing in empty stadiums? might not want to ask any Jayhawks though as I imagine they’re used to it haha wow
Curious to see how those type of negotiations go with cfb players. Liability, will I lose my scholarship by not playing, etc.
Do you believe a large number of players who are doing everything they can to get to the next level would be concerned about a virus which presents very little risk to them? Most agree the threat is not high to younger people but rather it’s to those higher risk people they may interact with.
I believe some will think twice. I also think the family members of POC players will encourage them to be careful about it. Will be interesting to watch it play out.
I need to find it but I saw a report that any Arkansas students who elected to opt out of the summer practices would have their scholarship protected. I expect this to be the case across the board with the NCAA. I also think the number of players concerned about Covid and unbothered by other potential injuries to be extremely small in the grand scheme of things. These players are there to work towards getting to the next level in most cases. They want to play bc they see it as their potential ticket to the NFL.
I would be very interested if anyone could produce any evidence of large scale long term damage having been identified in those aged 18-44 who recovered from Covid 19. Is this something that is being seen regularly? I haven’t seen any evidence of this being a large scale issue.
So you have seen instances of this being observed? Are there some scientific studies you can point me towards to learn more?
You said that the virus presents very little risk to them. I was merely asking a question about the "very little risk" part.
I think it’s a combination of things which keeps them playing; love of the game, the education, the fame, etc. I think each player has their own drive which keeps them playing. Most I believe are doing it for the off chance that they will hit the NFL lottery. I don’t believe the ultra small risk of a severe Covid response would be enough to overrule whatever is driving them to play. But I am happy to admit I am wrong if large amounts of players refuse to report for practices.
The limited risk I was referring to the small numbers of severe responses to Covid in the age demographics of players. You seemed to indicate the long term issues were something to be concerned about. If it isn’t being observed in cases of younger patients; than why would people be concerned about it. Your post seemed to indicate this was a legitimate concern. I am simply asking for evidence of this concern you have of long term damage. Is there any evidence of this?
66 of 70 hospitalized patients had some amount of lung damage in CT scans, and more than half had the kind of lesions that are likely to develop into scars: https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/full/10.1148/radiol.2020200843 58 asymptomatic patients, 95 percent also had evidence of these ground-glass opacities in their lungs. More than a quarter of these individuals went on to develop symptoms within a few days. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7152865/ Large-Vessel Stroke as a Presenting Feature of Covid-19 in the Young https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2009787
I think we can all agree that for his own sake, Justin Fields should avoid any risk, shut it down, and start getting ready for the draft.
