I was with you up until you used the word “investment.” If I were to purchase one that happened to appreciate in value, I’ll see it as a bonus. Otherwise they’re depreciating assets that we enjoy. Side note, and I swore I wasn’t going to buy any more cheap watches, am I crazy for liking this Seiko Flightmaster? This is a sweet $200 watch.
Agreed. Largely watches are too. In the sense of things like estate planning or net worth, technically they’re all “assets.” My collection of Ex Officios is technically an asset too (in case anyone’s looking to buy.)
The degree that cars drop in value is insane compared to other assets though. Investment and cars should never be used together.
I’m super close to pulling the trigger on the JLC Geophysic Universal Time but still looking at other World Time pieces. Any opinions on other options would be appreciated.
That’s just the day after drinking Rye heartburn. At least that’s the misery I deal with when doing so.
I’m getting their least Bauhaus design. It holds their 1st in-house movement & I kinda like to quirkinesses of the power window
Mont Blanc Orbis Terrarum (not sure i’d ever pull the trigger on a MB watch, but they look good and have good “guts”) Movado Polygraph (vintage) Fredrique Constant Worldtimer Gerard Perregaux WW.TC Chopard L.U.C. Time Traveller I think all of these provide good value on the 2nd hand market. I’m especially drawn to the vintage Movado Polygraph.
THE POINT WAS THAT THEY’RE NOT THE STUPIDEST THING YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR MONEY. I think it can still be an investment even if you don’t make money. Like I think it’s pretty sweet that you can buy a Submariner for 10k, wear it and enjoy it for years, and resell it for say $9k. I think that’s easily worth a grand. I know a lot of idiots who spend tens of thousands of dollars modding their trucks and end up selling them for pennies on the dollar. I know of people who buy luxury cars worth a 5711 and don’t get anything close to the return that buying a 5711 would get.
https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watch-omega-specialities-edizione-venezia-51113402002001 Anyone have any idea how much these cost? They’re beautiful.
I totally agree with you. It’s a discussion point. I don’t own a nice car because I was raised that it’s a depreciating asset. The status provides minimal value in what I do. My dad drives a 15 year old car with pride. He could afford a new one.
Thanks to that post it did inspire me to look into World Time pieces. I’m anxiously awaiting what his fall watch will be.
Scheduled for delivery tomorrow FYI this is a microbrand I had been keeping tabs on for a few weeks that just went live on Kickstarter. 500m diver with a pretty unbelievable spec sheet for $700. A bit too big for me (43mm, 51mm lug to lug), but check it out. Some cool color variants if you're a fancy boy like me:
that’s about right, also only available at their store in Venice Italy so it looks like I’ll be taking a trip soon.
slogan119 it's coming don't hurt me. I unboxed it last night and it's great. It wears much better than it's dimensions would indicate. I'm not the biggest Patek guy out there but my god this is sexy as all fuck
Fudd Gates After you mentioned it I was damn I would totally wear that. So what I’m saying is hurry up.
wait, I’m not sure if I understand what you said but I did not get that Patek in the video, I can assure you
That’s beautiful. I can imagine you’re happy with it and I have no idea how you waited to unbox. Can’t wait to see it. Congrats!
While we wait for Fudd Gates to post sometime this year, I tried this 5712 on recently. Did not buy since it was a resell for like $90k, but still
You set expectations quite high. And didn’t fulfill. Shame! Shame! Shame! But do you still have a GF? Curious about that side story.
Damn. While we're talking Nautilus, had a brief window of consideration for a 5990/1a Tiffany full set from a wholesaler through my brother. I waited too long and it's gone. Probably for the best, I guess. But fuck. Even if I had regrets (unlikely) it could've been flipped quickly.
After all that delay I wasn't even able to get the wristshot I wanted, nor was I able to get the video I was going to shoot making fun of Hodinkee slogan119
And since so many of you asked: I was going to stick my hand in about a foot of ocean water and say that this is a tool watch like my friends at Hodinkee would say
I messaged Hokeamania and told him what I was getting and asked him if it was worth it to spend an extra $300 for the bracelet. I didn't wait for his response and ordered it on rubber because honestly I got a really good deal. Of course he was right, he told me the bracelet was very good and that I could easily pickup an aftermarket or OEM strap easily. Honestly the only knock I have on this watch is the rubber strap is not great. It's not even good honestly. It would be fine if there was a deployant clasp, but it's just a tang clasp (I don't like them). Then I went on Chrono and eBay and see OEM bracelets are very expensive and I realized I done goofed. Maybe I'll throw it on a NATO and become a real watch guy. Is it better than a Sub? No it's not. But you can reallllly see what people mean when they say you can build an entire great collection for the price of a Sub. Absolutely beautiful watch. Dial is stunning, love the skeleton hands, bezel insert and font is beautiful, it winds so quietly and smoothly. It wears very very well for 42mm and 50mm lug to lug. Same exact measurements as my Zenith, so I knew it would work, but it wears even better. Much more manageable than the Zenith despite same proportions.
What’s the difference between the Seiko sna411 and sna411P1? Assume they’re the same watch but different straps?
