Some neighborhood kids are going to play a zoom D&D game my neighbor will run for them. My daughter (10) was invited. My son (5) got very upset he was excluded, so I talked the DM into letting us co-play a character in the game.

We sat down to roll up his character last night and this is what he came up with (I asked questions, but these were all his ideas).

He does karate, so he wanted to be a human monk. Basic but OK. I dig it. He wanted the name of a famous martial artist. After some brainstorming, we settled on Zabka (of Billy Zabka/Jonny Lawrence fame).

He was from a small town and his older brother (Billy) was a criminal. One day Zabka saw Billy's friend (also a criminal) Phro-e (his name this time) murder someone. Zabka had to go into witness protection (we watched Sister Act Sunday night) and was sent to a monastery.

There he met his master, Quadrupa, a silver dragonborn specializing in acrobatics that drinks a lot of wine and likes to play pranks (he and his sister have been planning for April Fools).

He left the monastery after the local crime boss, Gyob (we still need to flesh him out some), burnt his family's house down to kill Billy, who had tried to leave the gang.

Not the MOST compelling backstory, but I was proud of him. He could use some help with names.

In my last campaign, which was like the third one with the same people, one of my players turned in the backstory "Hara was once a famous champion of the Waterdeep gladiator pits, but now she is a stonemason in this small town. She drinks a lot." Every other player turned in multi page word documents.

I really enjoyed playing Gloomhaven, played about 25 or so scenarios but the setup and takedown of the game is such a pain it's hard to get it to the table. Then the character progression is kind of slow, so like we have to play quite a few scenarios before I feel my character is getting really better, and at that point, I've invested 10+ hours into it, over the course of a month or so. I'm really looking forward to the digital version to help with a lot of this, and while I've backed Frosthaven for $1, I doubt I go all in. It's hard for my group to play, we all have jobs, kids, other hobbies - it's hard to play through.

If you've ever wanted to participate in very sloppily played Seven Wonders, my daughter's insistence on two players using all 7 boards has yielded those results consistently. It does take my mind off work (Hospital IT) for a really long time.

I have it, I enjoy it, keep a note pad by and take notes. It's a lot of fun at 2 players, can play with more but then a couple won't feel as engaged - you use a cell phone for most of it. My wife was so/so on it - it's hard to play with kids running around as you do have to sort of get into the story and not get distracted.

Finally got around to playing Twilight Struggle last Friday. Only finished 1 round, but I think I got the hang of it enough to finish a game. What a game. It's a long game, but feels like you'd need multiple play-throughs before you could possibly have a cohesive strategy.

They have an app version, and a steam version that I've tried to get into, have done the tutorial a time or two it's a very intimidating game, but one I want to learn.

I've been playing quite a bit of digital games while everything was shut down - Blood Rage, Stock Pile, Viticulture just came out, Small World, Scythe, Spirit Island - a lot of fun games that are pretty good playing the solo digital version.

a close friend of mine created a board game. It's called Broken Crown

check it out and consider supporting their fundraising efforts. The two dudes developing it are legitimately world class artists and super creative so my money is on it being very cool

my friend taught anatomy drawing in Florence for like a decade, I doubt many board games will be able to match their designs

Root is really cool. It's like Risk meets the Redwall world from those children's books. More nuanced than any game I've played before. Would recommend for people who have a small group you consistently play with because fuck teaching new people to play ha

Gonna take a while to really learn the ropes

pandemic legacy season 1 is great and plays fine (maybe a little easier) at 2 players. Play a few games of pandemic before legacy so you’re not lost.

Forbidden Desert, Forbidden Island are good co-op games.

spirit island is fun but it’s a bit heavier

chronicals of crime is another good one, little different than a normal board game but it’s fun

Because of covid I’ve been playing a lot more digital board games- Root was released a few weeks ago, wingspan last week, a game of thrones next month. There’s a pretty impressive digital library on Steam.
Gloomhaven just had a pretty big update and while the campaign isn’t on there yet they do have a guild master mode which is close to a campaign and has the starting classes plus 2 more, Ive been having fun with that. Once the full version is out it’s going to be pretty amazing.

check our chronicals of crime. Sherlock Holmes consulting detective (Sherlock is a lot harder and a lot more reading but they’re pretty hard crimes to solve).

Another easier but fun one is Horrified.

A Game of Thrones digital came out today on Steam - played one game against the AI on my lunch break and it's well done. A couple of small bugs, but it's fun. Hoping to be able to get some friends to play this game online, this is one game that I think could be better online with a discord chat open than in person - would really allow for some secret scheming with other players that is just really hard to accomplish with everyone sitting around the same table.
