Not yet. Vet said 2 weeks of recovery before he can be around other dogs (as he could still be contagious) so we are playing it safe. We’re on day 10 of being home

They’re still contagious for a few weeks and the virus can live in the soil for up to year. So if I didn’t and another dog came over it could be at risk if we didn’t

My lab mix loves tennis balls, but she doesn't play fetch really. She takes them and rips all the fuzz off them and then chews the remaining ball into pieces.

Our husky doesn't play fetch, at all. He'll chase something twice, then the next time you throw it he just looks at you like "why'd you do that, I'm not getting it again."

Going to take Teddy to obedience school after this last round of shots. Really embarrassed me on a walk today. Made it out 50 feet away from my house and he saw another dog on a walk in front of us. He started pulling like crazy on his harness and I stopped walking and firmly said, “No”. He continued to pull, started jumping like crazy and thrashing while howling like someone was beating him for about 5 min. Dog was out of site but he was still acting crazy. Had a neighbor run out of their backyard to make sure everything was okay. Had to pick him back up and carry him in the house. Let him relax for 20 min and took him back out on the walk and he was fine.

Edit: Anyone ever have an issue like this and what steps did you take to correct the behavior?

Going through it now with Olive. She’s great until she sees another dog on a leash. If they are just in their yard, she doesn’t make a sound. On a leash though, and she does exactly what your dog did. I’m interested to see the replies.

Yeah, I was shocked. Teddy looked like a Marlin breaching the surface on a deep sea charter. Kind of funny after the fact, but that’s an absolute no go from here on out. I’ll report back with Obedience School stuff later. He’s due for his last shot in a week.

My Husky doesn't play with toys basically at all and doesn't play fetch either. He just likes running around and his kiddie pool when we fill it up.

Olive is 2, so I don’t know how much obedience school would help. My wife is trying to train her like she did with our other dogs but she isn’t caring as well when olive sees another dog on a leash.

In Hunting Trips of a Ranchman, Theodore Roosevelt writes about hunting turkeys on the plains with greyhounds. They’d apparently catch them in flight. Pretty cool.

I ask because dogs are a little like humans, they also need to see other dogs.

i think your reaction was a little inappropriate. He was maybe just excited to go see a potential buddy. I would’ve approach the other person and ask if the dogs could meet just for a second and you are on your way.

obviously if your dog is aggressive towards other dogs, you don’t take the chance.

again I am not an expert but my experience is this.
i used to walk my parents dog in a trail in the wood whenever I was dogsitting , but still a fairly busy trail. I did not keep him on a leash, the worst dogs were the ones with the anxious owners that were pulling on the leash at the first sight of another dog. I would sometimes tell them to just « let them go, mine won’t fight back he will just get out of there and continu walking if he feels aggression ». Most of them would just decline, the ones that tried it never saw their dog so relax with another dog. They were very surprised to see their dog just playing with another dog when they usually snapped at them

never had a bad experience doing this. But my dude was without any malice whatsoever so a conflict was out of the question. My situation was easy, but you gotta try it or you will never know.

maybe, like I said I can only go with my experiences and usually the more the owner is scared the most aggressive the dogs got. I might have this backwards too.

When I'm walking them and someone has their dog off leash when mine aren't? Absolutely not. That's a terrible idea and I'm not about to let my dogs off leash in a public highly traffic park. I'm not going anywhere near someone who isn't controlling their dog while I'm walking mine.
In a dog park or at friends where there's a yard? Yes.

Again no. I don't know the other person or their dog. Mine are fairly well trained but who knows if the other dog is, or if it's aggressive. I'm not gonna find out.

i said fairly busy not highly but it is also a wood, not in a street of right in the city

That place, we would see people every 5-10 minutes with dogs in the summer.

Social interaction is huge with dogs. User IHHH could be into something with letting them meet. Obviously keep both leashes and don’t give them much free reign.

No, I just don't want him acting like a mad man when he's on the leash and isn't getting his way. I don't allow him to meet any dogs at this moment because he's not up to date on his vaccinations. On the flip side, I'm not going to call out to someone 50-75 yds in front of me to stop walking their dog so mine can catch up and smell him because my dog is howling. Would also not let my dog interact with any dog that is hyperactive on a leash.
