At first I thought this was reputable reported. Then i realized it was what everyone else ITT has been saying
Is disc scratching really an issue any more? Blu Ray's are pretty scratch resistant plus it's not like the console is reading the game from the disc anyway
My understanding is the console reads the game from the hard drive and the disc is just to establish the license Edit - and it's used for the initial install, of course
I am really hoping for that $449/$499 to be the case, but I really think it will be $500/$600 Consequently, I wrote/submitted an article about this exact thing today, once it gets published I'll put it in here, but it echoes a lot of what y'all are saying. Share play not really being all that useful, desire to share, lack of great internet are the things that will push people to the disc-based one. Ability to have the games as soon as they are available, to pick and choose the parts you download, price difference, etc is what will push people to the digital only. Both will sell great, both will have their supporters, Sony will be glad they gave people the choice.
Less. It's like 825 or something like that. In theory games could be smaller this gen. With significantly faster drive speeds they could do a lot more compression.
Hmmm not sure I like the sound of that. Can't imagine making a decently sized hard drive would be problematic in this day and age. Especially if there is a digital only version. Oh well.
They aren't using a HDD. They are using brand new tech for their drive. The drive is probably the most expensive part on the whole console if I had to guess.
As far as the SSD size goes, there's a couple things that make the 825 gig not the big deal people are making it out to be. First, because of the speed and how the SSD reads data, the package sizes should be smaller because the devs don't have to duplicate data to increase the game speed, drawing of textures, etc. That's not saying they won't use that extra room for other shit, but in theory each game should take up less space. and second, assuming Sony mandates this with all games, you are supposed to be able to choose the pieces of the game you want to download. At the very least, that should allow people who don't give a shit about multiplayer to only download the campaign for COD or whatever game, thus taking up less space. I'm doing research for an article about the SSD now, so I expect there are more reasons that the storage from SSD to HDD isn't 1:1, but this is what I know to be true/possible right now.
Yea this is the important part, its 825 gb because its a custom proprietary SSD Sony is using that's built-in to the system, which is why I don't think the digital version and the disc version will have a difference in storage size, its not as simple as them swapping out a bigger HDD and I highly doubt they're going to double slot SSDs for the digital version unless they're planning to announce that as something like $200 dollars more expensive.
I'm sorry for posting this so late but if anyone is up there are 30 min left. A remarkable deal and helps a good cause.
Correct, but they said they hadn't figured out what size would be compatible yet, so they urged holding off on getting one
Holy crap, not sure how many of you were Kingdoms of Amalur fans on ps3 but I just noticed on Amazon that it's getting a redone PS4 release from THQ Nordic in august. I loved that game. Company went bankrupt when owner Curt Schilling spent a ton of money. I remember reading the game property being bought a few months back but didnt think a release would come this soon. https://www.gameinformer.com/2020/06/04/the-kingdoms-of-amalur-re-reckoning-comes
Played that game, RR Salvatore wrote a lot for that game didn't he? Probably wouldn't play it again though.
Yeah he wrote the universe/lore. If it was $60 I'd probably pass until it was on sale but $40 is a solid price point
I was rewatching the Mark Cerny Power Hour presentation from April, and he mentioned that the Spiderman devs had the data for the mailboxes duplicated 400 times in the game package so they would load faster. That one instance may not be all that much space, but imagine that they had to do that with 50 different repeating design elements in the virtual Manhattan, all of a sudden you're talking about serious space being used up. That's a thing of the past with SSD
Yeah definitely makes sense. Pretty cool. I imagine those types of advancements in the tech definitely gets overlooked by most users
Exactly, all they see are the numbers, which used to be fine, so it's just a mindset adjustment. The incremental gains in processor speed, amount of RAM, etc used to mean a lot more because the jumps were bigger. As all that stuff has gotten better, there's only so much better that the graphics can look, so now it's really more "quality of life" type stuff that people have a hard time quantifying in their minds
I’m really curious if either Sony or Microsoft tries to buy up the Warner brothers gaming assets, locking in a studio like rocksteady or the studio making the Harry Potter rpg game would seem to be a big get. Might be something interesting to watch.
Started playing Everybody's golf yesterday. Forgot how fun that is, wife enjoyed playing with me too which was nice. I also have it for VR, but haven't even tried it yet because i get sick everytime I put on the headset. Any tips for VR and motionsickness?
Sounds like EA, Activision, and Take Two are the main interested parties from what I've been reading. I hope none of the 3 get ahold of them but if any do at least let it be Take Two. They suck the least out of the 3.
I'm not normally, or ever, the guy to customize my console, but I know there are a fuck-ton of people out there who love it, so to me it's an instance of Sony paying attention to what players want. They haven't always been great about that, so I love anything that is a sign toward their continued lack of "people will buy it no matter what" arrogance.
are there really a fuck ton of people who love it? I know approximately zero people that do it. second is this really “paying attention to what players want,” or just another shitty revenue opportunity like face plates on the 360 that no one gave a single fuck about?
I'm certainly not going to change anyone's mind, but the sales figures say that the special edition consoles that occasionally release sell very well. The Spiderman edition, The Last of Us edition, etc etc. Even if it's just true collectors and not late adopters, they sell pretty well. if you offer people just the face plates, odds are good that they will sell well on top of the specials. And to me, anything Sony does along this avenue is an improvement over their typical stance, where they didn't seem to care much about accessories or that kind of thing, and generally seemed pretty arrogant toward their customers.
those editions typically sell well because there’s a game included or it’s slightly discounted when accounting for the games price imo.
If you guys don’t think that the anime cosplay crowd isn’t dying to uwu feng shui their apartments then idk what to tell you
yeah people buy special editions for the fancy console, not the game they could just buy otherwise. hell people get the console, sell the game, and then buy it digital quite often. theres a reason nintendo constantly shits out special editions of everything that dont even come with games. that being said, unless its a handheld console i dont care what mine looks like.
