That's not allowed. Otherwise none of these guys would be signing. There's a 5% rule where the total bonus allowance is all the slot values + 5% of that total. That's how high you can go without getting penalized future picks. Considering we had the #1 overall + an extra pick after round 2, that 5% is pretty high for us this year, which is likely where we're getting some of that room.
You gotta wonder if our pitiful positional player prospects had to play a significant role in him signing. He signed more than Cruz being drafted A round later too.
he was always taking less than full slot. He will sign fir about $400k below slot. There is your difference
So the season will start with a 30 man MLB roster, plus the 30 man taxi squad in Toledo. The MLB roster drops to 26 by the end of August. Would think that Toledo group will include every top prospect above rookie ball, but it will be interesting to see the names (which are due to MLB by Sunday afternoon). Of course, it will be a miracle if this thing actually starts at this rate with COVID.
The season is happening. Will the taxi squad be playing other taxi squads? Let’s call to Mize, Manning, Skubal
I'd guess a lot of the extra players will be pitchers. I'd hope Manning, Skubal and Mize make the roster and at least throw some BP innings. Absolutely no use in starting Zimmerman in any games this year, unless you are going for #1 pick again
They were saying on ESPN radio that you could have players on the roster for whole shortened season and not accrue a full year of service time. Makes no excuse for those guys not be called up. Maybe in the bullpen but a full season in the rotation would be only 12 starts and around 70-80 innings.
Cabrera is literally the only player under contract next year (of course we have arbitration and all the other weird stuff). Prince's $6 mil a year payments even ends in offseason.
That’s exciting stuff tbh. Never forgot his comments after the ALCS loss about having a family got his fatass shipped out
Wonder if he ends up on the main roster this season. Fuck it, let him and Greene hang out with the big club and get some AB.
The Tigers have zero chance to compete this season. I'd just treat it like a 60 game ST. Throw in young pitchers for 3-5 innings, mix some young guys with the vets to get some AB. Old players on expiring contracts who have no future on the team would get very limited PT.
Why does this matter at all? It’s not like you’re going to have Kumar or anybody worth a shit to sign for $20k.
Why not play the lotto and get more depth in the system? Clearly other teams are doing it. Is Avila just that much smarter?
I don't know that it's by design or not. Would hope they at least tried on some arms to fill the system. I don't think it's a huge deal if they're not signing anyone because the Tigers are likely losing 2 minor league short season teams as early as next year, but it's still odd if they don't get anyone.
The only reason Zimmermann starts games for us is Ilitch doesn't want to cut someone making that much money. It's a stupid reason, but owners are stupid about that stuff often times.
I had no interest in watching this org drag their ass through 162 games at the major league in 2020 even before COVID-19.
Looking at the 40 man currently, my guess on the 30 man if we actually end up playing... C - Romine, Greiner, Rogers IF - Cron, Schoop, Goodrum, Candalerio, Lugo, H. Castro DH - Cabrera OF - Reyes, Maybin, Jones, Stewart, Demeritte SP - Boyd, Fulmer, Zimmermann, Turnbull, Norris RP - Jimenez, Alexander, Nova, Farmer, Cisnero, R. Garcia, B. Garcia, McKay, Schreiber, Soto That leaves the following 30 as my guess for taxi squad... C - Haase, Scivicque, Dingler IF - Paredes, W. Castro, Alcantara, Torkelson, Perez, Clemens OF - Cameron, Hill, Stokes, Greene, Packard, Cabrera SP - Mize, Manning, Faedo, Skubal, Burrows, Funkhouser, Rodriguez, Perez RP - Pinto, Hess, Lange, Richaun, Castro, Carlton, Blackwood In terms of the taxi squad, I'm guessing they'll have a ton of arms on there just to be able to do scrimmages/games and get the hitters they want as many ABs as possible. Those seem like pretty much all the arms they have at AA and higher. I've got 3 2020 picks in there between Torkelson, Dingler and Cabrera. The infield group seems like it would be the most volatile, as I have them not bringing Quintana, Lipcius and a few others from the 19 draft, as well as Cruz, Workman and Keith from this year (Keith seems very unlikely, given how far away he is). I could also see them throwing in another catcher like Cooper Johnson or Joey Morgan just to keep spring training vibes going to make sure they have enough guys to work with all the pitchers.
I would love to see them say fuck it and bring up Mize, Manning, Skubal and Faedo as back end guys or bullpen arms, and I think we'll see at least 2-3 of them this year at some point. I just don't see that happening at the start, and I'd be very surprised if they don't at least give Zimmermann a few starts just based on how much he makes. Same with Paredes on the infield, but I think they're going to want to see Candelario at 3B again and won't call up Paredes just for the hell of it.
They could, but even if they do, Nova (who likely makes it because we're paying him over $1M) and Alexander are both starters. R. Garcia is a potential long man. I think Skubal makes a ton of sense out of the pen in that kind of role, but again I'm just not sure they'll go that route. Adding those guys to the big league roster means they have to put them on the 40 man through the entire offseason. I'm not sold they want to do that with all those pitchers. I also think they really like Turnbull as a starter, and they'll want to make sure they give Fulmer every chance to work himself back. Boyd and Norris aren't going anywhere, either. If/when they do bring up Manning and Mize, I think the likely scenario is they're running a 6 man rotation in that scenario.
I think we played this game before. I can easily name at least 15-20 players they can cut off that 40 man roster to make room for them.
Zimmermann Cisneros Funkhouser McKay Schriber Hasse Soto R. Garcia Griener Alcantara Lugo Demeritte Hill Strokes Stewart This game actually got a little tougher this year. Still 90% of those guys clear waivers if they get DFA.
Sure, but some of that also depends on where they think these pitchers are in their development with the layoff. If they think they'll be able to go into next season with Mize, Manning and Skubal in the rotation, then you can dump any of those guys for them. If they're not and they think it's going to take more time, then those relievers have a use in that they can eat up a roster spot for a bit while the young guys stay in the minors and develop. If it were me, I'd start the season (if it starts) with Boyd, Fulmber, Norris, Mize and Manning in the rotation. Throw Turnbull, Skubal and maybe Faedo in the pen, and see what I've got. I'd play Paredes half the games at 3B/2B and platoon Cron v. RHP. I think it's pretty well established here that I'm not running the team, though, and that Avila and this staff has been overly conservative every step of the way with these young players. That said, I do think there's something to the idea that with guys like Mize and Manning, you don't just call those types of guys up for the hell of it to fill innings. You let them develop until they're ready so that, when they do show up, they're here to stay. I don't know what any of them will look like in a month, unfortunately.
Fullmer is ready to pitch and Gardenhire said Mize, Manning, Faedo and Skubal will be on 60 man taxi squad
Tork could end up Tigers best prospect ever in Baseball America by next season. Baseball Cube has the top prospect we've had each year and their national ranking. He currently already our 3rd best ever at #11. 2007 Maybin was #6 2006 Verlander was #8 Current Tork rating at #11 2020 Mize #13 (prior rank) Current Manning #19 (or whatever he was ranked prior) 2003 Bonderman #20 And then Jacob Turner, Nick, and Porcello all hit #21
So from my math, I think I got 50 of the 59 names (including Tork). Main ones I missed on were minor league FAs I completely forgot about. Only kind of surprising name not on today's list was Troy Stokes. He's the only guy on the 40 man not named among the 59. Some Twitter speculation I saw had him possibly being DFAd to get Fulmer back on the 40 man at the start of the season. I'm curious what happens with the 5-6 minor league FA pitchers who are on the list, and whether they're on there to potentially take a beating while the kids are in Toledo, or if they're just going to be in case of emergency guys who don't have anything to do with the kids.
