how many times do people have to post about the antibody tests being worthless? They are correct in some cases half the time. GETTING ANTIBODY TESTING IS WORTHLESS

Just watched a fauci interview on CNN about *why* contact tracing is failing. He’s brought up a few points but one really good one is that in some parts of the country (Texas and arizona specifically) you have people with brown skin who are afraid to report who they are with. Even if they are here legally/a citizen, a family member or friend might not be and they are afraid that ICE will use contact tracing to deport people now or later. Very real concern and very difficult to convince that group of people that they should trust the government right now.

I don’t get it. Gilead priced this very very reasonably. Biotech analysts are struggling with how they’ll recoup the $1B they’ve spent on the drug developing it. I mean, these are priced like antibiotics. And those don’t get developed anymore because there is no return on investment or incentive so now we have super bugs and no way to treat them. This take sucks.

also, this is not arguing against m4a. It’s just that this isn’t relevant.

How about we live in a world where publicly funded research is paid for by a tax system where we all pay into it, and the rich pay their fair share. How is that every develop country doesn't charge outrageous prices like this? Is this the "America subsidizes the R&D for the rest of the world" argument?

To me the price is just the cheese and the m4a is the meat of the tweet. People have lost their jobs and insurance and Trump is fighting to take away Healthcare for people and many can't afford to take drugs that might keep them alive. I understand production and cost but we shouldn't live in a world where getting sick makes you choose between bankruptcy and death.

The Covid drug is the perfect drug right now to make that case.

The NIH and other government organizations fund almost all research outside of drug companies. Most universities typically do the research on the bio mechanisms that leads to pathways for drug.

I guess I missed all of those posts, they are worthless? I know the earlier ones were a lot less accurate, but the one I took was 100/99.8 sensitivity/specificity.

Is there new info I missed on why antibody tests are useless? I've seen reports that there are tons of bad tests on the market, specifically with the ones you do yourself at home, but that does not mean they are all bad. Labcorp is a reliable testing site for active covid cases. It would be odd if they were considered reliable in that regard, but were pushing faulty antibody tests at the same time. All I've seen on the Roche antibody test is that it's reliable.

But again, I'm asking about is the idea that severity of illness correlates to production of antibodies or longevity of existing antibodies that can be detected. I saw the Chinese study that looked at 74 patients, have there been more studies that confirmed those findings?

Right, that's 100% my point. I was in grad school for a minute and am aware of how much grant writing goes into trying to secure a NIH grant for your biochemical/pharmacology research. There is important research done after that by biotech companies, but they spend so so so much on advertising that I do not buy the idea that we'll see no research performed by them if we put in cost control mechanisms. I'm sure it won't be perfect, but the ability to frame a single-plan government sponsored M4A as putting the absolute breaks on drug research is one of the most effective arguments that idiot centrist Dems buy into.

I agree with this. Drug companies have a bad tendency to create "New" drugs that tend to be spins on old ones that increase outcomes only slightly at way more expense. I'm not sure if we were better off just letting Pharm Reps buy a bunch of shit for doctors vs direct marketing to patients.

Seems like a few of them have substantial financial backing and will be alright. West End took advantage of the lockdown and just shut down and completely redesigned the place. Doesn't even look like the same bar. Plus many of the people that live around there just don't seem to care about COVID.

Science has told us to implement a rigorous multi-step process for validating the effectiveness of a vaccine and understanding potential side effects.

So yeah, I’ll be interested in how many of those steps get cut out, how similarly the vaccine functions to similar vaccines that have gone through full review processes, and what foreign counterparts to the FDA have to say about its safety.

Exactly. You don't discount it because it's coming from this administration. You discount it because it wasn't rigorous science.

Remdesivir wasn't developed on "publicly funded research" exclusively. Was publicly funded research included? Probably. Do you know what percentage of the development was covered publicly? The entire premise in your mind is wrong. Gilead also donated an incredibly large number of doses.

This isn't an outrageous price. Even UK's ICER which is extremely conservative gave a price range that would be cost effective ABOVE where Gilead priced this.

And if you're suggested that entirely publicly funded efforts can develop drugs, I have some serious doubts but that's another discussion.

Your rage is so misdirected. Aim it at the insurance industry how about. They should pay for medicines - that's why we have insurance in the first place. For when we get sick! When they refuse to pay because it's "too expensive" doesn't that defeat the point of us paying into insurance in the first place? What exactly do they want to pay for?

A good analog is choloroquine vs. remdesivir. The only independent studies of choloroquine were obviously flawed. Anybody who knows anything about science knew it needed more research even though the administration was touting it. Then remdesivir came along and actually had reasonable research behind it.

Science and politics are inextricably interwoven but science needs to be judged independently of politics, as well.

Insurance companies pay, not individuals. Individuals without insurance is wrong. How we all get insurance is an important discussion, but unrelated to a very reasonable price for this specific medicine. Insurance reform is SORELY needed. But the insurance industry has done an incredible job convincing you to hate pharma instead of insurance. Are there medicines way over priced? Yes. Should insurance (m4a or private) negotiate those to improve there own margins? Sure. Should they push that cost to the consumer to make you rage? Fuck no.

And all this you did not even say that the people who have socialized medicine do not have to pay that individual cost for that drug, they pay for it all in a single pair system. That is the point of the tweet dude, I don't know why you like to shill so much for drug companies.

It does not matter if the fucking cost is priced correctly, if you have a $4,000 dollar deductible plus out-of-pocket expenses you have to meet before you even can get your insurance to pay for the cost of treatment.

That page with all the graphs is TLDR. I noticed Florida is doing that with their site as well. I don't know if they're trying to be more transparent, or make it so people have so many options they get overwhelmed and just don't look.
