I remember when O'Malley said that Buchner was so good that Kelly was pushing back his retirement and Long was going to pass on HC jobs just so they could get to coach him.
Welp, might as well cut the dead weight if he's going to struggle at a national camp like this. Let's process him and start looking for the 2023 QB
The negativity on the 247 site basically makes it unreadable...people complain about the same thing over and over and over again somehow believing that the staff at 247 can do something about it, it's mind boggling sure recruiting on the Offense doesn't like amazing right now like it did 4 months ago but literally no one knows what this class will truly end up looking like in Dec/Jan. Players develop/new players emerge/Decommitments WILL HAPPEN and even after all of that, who knows what they will develop like in college. I don't care about the rankings so much this cycle because it's going to be based on so much less film/camps. I truly think Barnes and Riley are top 150 level players that have the potential to be top 100 type players. I think we legitimately have 6-7 guys that are top 150 type players (Buchner, Fischer, Rubio, Styles, Berrong, Riley, Barnes) now and 2 who could be top 150 players after great SR years (Abiara/Onye). The rankings don't (and won't) agree with that but that's their right and you can believe what you want to believe in the end. I trust Mickens and Elston to be right more than I do Wiltfong and Barton Simmons but that's just me.
My opinion on recruiting this year is they just can’t have gaps, fill the class out with bodies and process them later if it doesn’t work out it’s obvious ND is on plan D at WR and OL right now and Plan C at RB
Also, Rubio is apparently a legit 6'6.5 and 305 lbs right now and this is what he looks like...btw, his brother is a freshman and apparently 6'2 and 220 lbs
I believe it was Farrel the other day on xm saying that ND’s biggest recruiting weakness for a DL. I about spit out my tea. We dont get 5 stars named Booger but DL is a great strength right now.
Recruits have been saying for years that they weren't sure about ND until they got on campus and then they understood. I know Zoom visits are fine but imagine trying to sell an elite recruit on a small university in Indiana with incredibly high academic standards. This idea of an elite class fell apart when that visit was cancelled in March. Now just put together what you can.
I mean this just shows you how little these guys actually pay attention, he’s just regurgitating a fucking Weis fallacy. It’s obviously RB and DB to all of us but the experts still think it’s DL from 2004
Yep, and back then we thought it was a demographic issue on the DL for whatever reason. We know now that we can recruit at every position, but we need quality recruiters across the whole staff to do it. Finding that mix has been a problem for years.
DL is probably the position we are least likely to get a top 50 prospect (maybe linebacker but off ball linebacker isn't really a premium position anymore), but also the biggest position strength of the program. It's running now similar to OL under HH where they loaded up on top 50-250 players and developed the hell out of them.
Loy put this in one of his articles today, it made me laugh because you can tell he's getting irritated by all the negativity on the boards Tom Loy: "I want to preface this by saying I love every one of the Irish Illustrated subscribers, but you guys got to calm down. You've got to take it easy. You're complaining about where recruiting stands in June regarding certain positions like offensive line and running back. The offensive line has two commitments, two really good commitments in my opinion. You have a future starter and most likely center for a couple years in Pat Coogan, a guy that a bunch of well-respected staffs beyond Notre Dame really liked, and we have Blake Fisher, who, again, just a really good player, a Top 100, in my opinion, probably closer to Top 50 talent nationally, and it was a big win. So, offensive line is in good shape. The key there, obviously everybody knows, is landing Rocco Spindler. If they don't, the pitchforks are going to come out. No question about it. People are going to be freaking out. It's not something I even want to think about seeing. The message boards are going to go crazy. But there is a very good chance right now that they land Rocco Spindler and pair him with Joe Alt, and we have a really good four-man class headed to play for Notre Dame, and people can pump the brakes just a little bit. The crazy thing is that all four of those guys could be committed to Notre Dame by the end of August and I think people would change their tune about offensive line recruiting. Now obviously if Alt goes to Iowa, Spindler chooses Michigan, it could be bad but I think people need to calm down with offensive line recruiting. On the other side, running back recruiting, and I'll make this quick, yes, they missed on Will Shipley. We all know, we've all talked about it. There's some guys that are very much in play for Notre Dame. Logan Diggs, Donovan Edwards, Tavierre Dunlap, JP Martin is a guy they're evaluating. Now again, that's a position that people need to just take it easy. Guys emerge during their senior years. If Diggs wants to go to USC right now, that's fine. If Edwards picks Michigan, it is what it is. Let it play out. Let's see what happens. Lance Taylor, he does a pretty good job. Let's see what he does when he watches guys early in the fall. Guys will emerge. Let's just take it easy, alright guys?"
The thing is Brian Kelly clearly stated what needs to be done in order for the program to compete. Not only has this class fallen short of that stated goal, if anything it has taken a step back from the standard set in prior years. We've missed on several key prospects and there is no plan b that meets the standard they themselves set. Now, I agree that being a lunatic on a message board isn't the answer, but don't try to sit there and tell everyone that everything is fine
Message board guy can obviously fuck off, but these are extraordinary circumstances right now. It would be easier with a local state base, but im giving them a pass for not understanding that a pandemic would make regular recruiting impossible. There are bigger things than football recruiting right now.
II pointed out that it's not just pandemic, but Chip Long was a really good recruiter and taking that for granted to fix the locker room is biting them in the ass.
All i'm saying is that you shouldn't judge any class in June, especially this one. It's what it looks like in Dec/Jan that matters (and in all honesty, not for 3 or 4 years when they are in college).
Sounds like Tyler lit it up in day #2. That throw off his back foot while running to the right was beautiful. Maybe he is who we though he is. Or he's Phil. What do I know, I don't get paid millions of dollars a year to evaluate high school kids
So someone has messed with Buchner's throwing motion and he looks like shit now? It is no fun for Kelly to ruin him if he is already damaged goods when he arrives on campus
Nah he was shitty yesterday and today. The video from today looks like he’s playing a joke on everyone by being intentionally terrible.
Oh, since their other rankings have been off of 11, I forgot their were 20 players there. Thought he did so bad they left him off the board out of pity.
