True to Em's style, 2 tracks will be really good and the rest will blow. I don't expect Cudi to make a difference one way or another.
just hard for me to separate it from the rest of the album, which is flawless. being the one pothole in an all-time classic is gonna amplify it sure, but I hear that screechy MAMACCEEETTAAA and have automatically skipped it for like a decade haha. might need to go back and listen just out of curiosity
Cudi is actually fucking rapping and Em isn’t even being cringe. When Em finds that pocket I can fuck with it
yeah, I can vibe with Cudi, but have been pretty much off Em for a decade now. I started today with the Juice WRLD project.
I’ve always been that way with him though. Renegades is one of my favorite songs ever and he’s a big reason for that. When he turns down the cringe shit and gets into a certain zone, he’s enjoyable
It’s just his albums from the jump have been a tough pill for me. He’s immensely talented and a big inspiration schematically for my favorite current rapper... it’s just his songs and substance for the most part aren’t for me
Black Thought has to be the greatest right? His shit is always so precise and clear while having outta control wordplay and delivery. His raps are always cohesive and understandable and just fucking dope. His existence blows my mind. He’s fucking 48 years old and TVE is as dope a fucking rap as I’ve ever heard.
I don't do "greatest" (because I'm a wishy washy indecisive coward) but he's obviously in the conversation. His combination of lyrical creativity/depth and breath control is super rare.
nah he gets penalized because of The Roots' lack of smash singles. "You Got Me" only goes so far, especially so since it's a boho boujee anthem. "Don't Say Nuthin" and "The Seed 2.0" don't count at all, before one of you smartees comes in with that silliness lol
I’ve always been of the opinion that the roots and their palatablity were an issue for his overall appeal but I even feel like when you get into deep heads he tends to get passed up by some weird names
takes me back to :smugbackpackcal: and being the only person in school with all the underground slim tracks that nobody knew
I sorta suspect that's generational? I'm in my late 30's and certainly if I talk to any such "deep heads" older than myself his name is on people's minds... but I dunno
Yeah probably definitely. Seems like new school pundits have a lot of knowledge wrt rap but they’re just as likely to big up 50 as they are BT
the age is what gets me. i'd probably have him in my current top 3 with Kendrick and Freddie. Obviously they put out content at very different rates, but verse to verse that's who I'm going with right now. And not sure you could say that about a 48 y/o ever before.
The track with all the other rappers saying how talented got to me a little. They saying he would lay down 3 songs to the same beat back to back to back and it all be a hit is wild.
Lupe is dropping a 5 song EP the 24th. He dropped a single called “shoes” featuring Virgil Abloh about standing in line for shoes and it reminded me of the range Lupe has. it’s basically “omg Lupe idgaf” or “damn, son” shoes is the latter
