We just finished ours. Honestly enjoyed it through season 7. Not on the level of the middle seasons but still enjoyable.

And then 8 was what it was and had us hating it again.

yeah on second thought there's some really good scenes post RW that make the slog through the rest of the meh shit worth it. You at least have to get through Tyrion's trial because Dinkelage fucking kills it. Hardhome is worth watching. Battle of the Bastards is impressive from a technical and budgetary standpoint but I personally was really disliking the show by then so I probably wouldn't make it that far on a re-watch. I bet I'd stop after Arya's magical healing dagger wound

I began a rewatch this past week. I just finished S1 Episode 10 “Blood and Fire”. A scene that flew under the radar the first time was Lord Commander Mormont’s intelligence and bravery in leading the Rangers out to find out what was going on with the Wildlings and Night Walkers. That scene was immediately followed by the one where Dany enters the inferno and emerges with the 3 dragon hatchlings. It served to just overwhelm the Castle Black happenings.

True, but if you stop at the rw, you’ll miss season 4 which is one of the best seasons imo

Wife's been casually rewatching and she just got to the final episode. As bad as season 8 was, nothing was more unrewarding than Cersei's death.

She's the primary antagonist of the entire series and she essentially dies off screen. As a writer, how do you let that happen?

I’m literally so happy that someone else agrees with me that the only good thing about the Battle of the Bastards was the aesthetics. They totally fucked up everything about the Northern plot line that it was so hard to care about what was going on.

Battle of the Bastards is a microcosm of the show in the later seasons. Looks really pretty with little substance behind it.

My hot take is that if you’re judging Game of Thrones strictly as an adaptation of the books it was never that good. They were already making pretty heavy handed changes to the books as early season two and they absolutely did not adapt AFFC or ADWD.

I think a better description of the shows is that it was still pretty great for 4-ish seasons despite not following the books too closely.

The best thing I can say about season four onwards is that it had moments of episodic brilliance (usually focused on the spectacle).

I don’t know if anybody cares enough anymore to make fun of season 8, but I did get a good chuckle out of this parody of the supposed letter Varys was writing in season 8.

Just finished the rewatch, mostly a top-level one, as I like to have something on while I'm working.
    - Dany's character arc made more sense to me this time around, knowing what was coming.
    - As far as the last season (or two), the thing I hated most that I'd forgotten about, is how they'd done the impossible: made me not even like Tyrion's character anymore. By the time he's giving his monologue about how Bran is the best choice for king, you're thinking "Well, if Tyrion thinks this is a good idea, that means it's a stupid idea that's going to turn out like shit".

Couldn’t disagree more. Agree with your point about Tyrion, though. From season 5 onwards he’s the most whitewashed character in existence. The idea of book Tyrion being some weeping pacifist and anybody’s moral compass makes me laugh.

I'm halfway through season six in my first full rewatch.

Dany and her entire story are so much less interesting than everything else in the show. Emilia Clarke just isn't very good in my opinion.

She never ends up “good” but my word she improves dramatically throughout the course of the show. 100% chance she never does another significant role on screen

Once the show got past the books, I think the finest moments are Winds of Winter, The Door, Spoils of War battle scene, and Jaime knighting Brienne which is literally the only thing I want to remember from season 8.

To be honest, binging it is kinda interesting. I didn’t hate the last season or two nearly as much. Don’t get me wrong, it’s bad but without spending a week bitching about it and reading all the negativity or speculating on what will happen you just kinda roll with it
