Seth on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast is making a stir this morning when they started talking a little about Israel. He basically said that he doesn’t really agree with the basis for its existence and thinks it takes something similar to a propaganda effort to keep Jews worldwide bought into the idea. It was wan interesting podcast, Seth is always funny to listen to.
I'm sure there won't be any anti-semitism in this thread at all! looking forward to some very level headed posting!
There's a huge deliberate and open effort to encourage American Jewry's connection to Israel (it's considered a vital component of Israeli foreign policy) so that "propaganda" point isn't really that ground breaking. As for the question of its existence - I mean you can't rewind and abolish it, but it was obviously very short sighted and foolish for Europe to carve out a state like that. It's certainly not fair to consider it a democracy while huge numbers of its population are disenfranchised and ghettoized. - American Jew
To be fair “similar to a propaganda effort“ was just me paraphrasing. I think something more closely to the exact words was “as children they’ve always been fed a bunch of lies.”
the tension between the progressive side and the hardcore zionist side is kind of untenable at this point. the polling has always leaned strongly former with increasing gaps as time goes on (not to the whether israel should exist thing which I can't imagine seth said it as clunky as this post lays out)
Here is an article related to his thoughts: https://uproxx.com/viral/seth-rogen-israel/ As an American Jew, I understand his general point. We should all have a better and broader understanding of how Israel came to be.
children are fed lies about Israel the same way they're fed lies about the U.S. Not a whole lot controversial here except for chuds who don't believe in history.
the parts of the interview where he touches on the hardcore zionists aligning with evangelical christians who are trying to bring about the apocalypse is maybe the craziest aspect of the whole dynamic
Americans who are outraged upon finding out that Israel was not formed unoccupied land is kind of a head scratcher to me.
hardcore zionists and the religious orthodox right makes up such a small part of Israeli citizenry, but unfortunately have disproportionate control
that's why i mentioned in the previous post that it's a small and shrinking minority not jewish myself but most my friends think similar to Rogen/Marons discussion, it's unfortunate there's not a broader presence at the national and international level for them
My position is you can't be indignant about the formation of Israel on land that was occupied by Palestinians at the time while living in a country that was flat-out stolen by an occupying force with no claim whatsoever to the land.
hypocrite policing instead of addressing the substance of what he said is definitely a choice then again I imagine he has similar thoughts about north american settlers
Maybe we agree then that almost ALL land was "stolen" from somebody? I just find it odd that the fixation is on the Jewish state as being an illegal occupation.
It’s one of the more difficult topics to discuss because antisemitism is very real and very dangerous, and antisemites seize any opportunity to co-opt the discussion around their own racism. That being said, it shouldn’t be controversial to acknowledge the very real situation that the Palestinians have been placed in, and to believe that they ought to have the right to their own land and safety. Also, it shouldn’t be controversial to acknowledge that English colonialism stole native lands. I’m here for it if anybody would like to talk about legitimate reparations for Native Americans.
hes talking about his personal experience of being sold a false narrative regarding his own identity and heritage. trying to all lands stolen it as obfuscation is odd. yes there are many other instances of imperialism, genocides, etc but it doesn't negate his point in any way.
Because they're in the process of stealing more and committing human rights violations to do it with our support, both political and financial
I agree with him 100%. I just find it interesting that Israel is being singled out. That's not to say I agree with with everything Israeli because I do not.
its two famous jewish guys on a podcast talking about one of the diciest topics in their lives that impacts them both i imagine Rogens new movie leaning heavy into his jewish heritage plays a part in it/theres a bunch of jokes about israel being settled while he was preserved in a pickle barrel (i'm excited for this movie)
I didn't listen to the interview, but from the quote I read, it didn't mention human rights violations. The "lies" that Rogen mentioned related only to the fact that he was led to believe as a child that Israel was created on land unoccupied by Palestinians. Obviously human rights violations are always a giant no-no for me.
I really enjoyed him talking about his Jewish camp he went to as a kid as I had a similar Protestant experience.
I threw a fit when my parents wanted to send me to jewish summer camp because I would have had to miss baseball games.
I went to a church camp where we made home repairs for poors in exchange for them accepting our doctrine
i went to one where we helped do yardwork and cleaning at a local public school seems like they should fund public education better
