I’m going to gather my grandchildren around the fire one day and tell them about Bill Simmon’s 2006 fantasy football team. Probably the greatest collection of talent ever assembled.
I think it has less to do with Boston and more to do with his love for basketball, and boredom with baseball. He used to be a baseball fan. He's not anymore. That's fine. I just wish he would admit it and not act like there's some huge flaw with the game that requires fixing from the sports guy. It's by far my favorite professional sport and I know I'm not the only one.
I doubt Bill has been a "baseball fan" for at least 15 years. Bill is a Red Sox fan, and in the last year the Red Sox went from having one of the best teams in the last few decades to trading their franchise player and running out a starting rotation the Tigers and Orioles think is laughably bad. I don't think there's a whole lot else that goes into it. I don't listen to Bill nearly as much as a lot of other people on here, but I can't remember a single baseball reference he's ever made that wasn't about the Red Sox or his fantasy league. And that's fine if he doesn't like it besides the Red Sox. The majority of the MLB audience likes their home team and couldn't care less about the sport on a national level. He should just be honest about why this year is different from previous ones.
Haven't listened yet, but JJ is just a really good podcaster, basically every episode I've consumed has been solid to great.
They talk about life in the bubble, leagues returning with COVID, the legacy of Kobe (and Steph), the advocacy of players. And they just got to a fantasy draft of airplane movies? Bo and JJ are great.
The Steph Curry stuff was great, especially since Bo had just come off mentioning he doesn’t like arguing with pro athletes hahaha. Loved how he handled that. The airplane draft was phenomenal.
He’s hardly the only sports/podcaster to complain about the watchability of Covid baseball. Also, while no one is picking Boston to win a title this season, it should be noted that the Red Sox were not, in fact, eliminated from the postseason on opening day.
Bill’s love for baseball was too tied into the Red Sox being the scrappy underdogs and the Yankees being the evil empire and once that dynamic changed into two evil empires he has feigned interest ever since. Also throw his old man “stat geeks have ruined talking about baseball” stuff in there too. He spent more time whining about this than talking about the actual games the last time the Red Sox won it all
And, generally speaking, the media members who have that take tend to be people who don't want to pay attention to baseball. They want to be able to jump in with a take when something happens, and they get pissy about anything new because not understanding it tells the audience they don't know what they're talking about. Wilbon's been like this for 15 years now on PTI.
agree on both. Mays' absence has highlighted that he was really the one who made the show very good. I think if you subbed him for Clark then I would at least listen more than I do now which is basically 100% guest dependent- like if they have someone from outside the Ringer that I want to hear from
I've seen some of Brandt's bits from the NFLN morning show and have found them to be pretty funny. That tweet the other day was ridiculous, though.
He’s been a great guest over the years too. His stuff around the Draft was solid. That tweet was trash.
No one is canceling him. It was just a trash take and he should take it back. But he hasn’t and the timing is bad.
I apologize to Bill, he's 100% right about MLB, way to ruin 1 of the only nights MLB will actually have a positive buzz online all season long
Not sure how long CC Sabathia and Ryan Ruocco have had a pod on the network, but I enjoyed the one today with Scherzer. CC and Ruocco were on with Simmons yesterday. Bill really is an asshole about MLB now.
It seems whatever he deems unwatchable to be a universal thing. I’ve hated his take on college football vs NFL forever. He’s a typical NE pro sport snob.
the worst is when he takes an opinion that's clearly only his and says "We all came away from that 2008 NBA season thinking the Celtics were the best team in the last 25 years"
Is it wrong that I was disappointed he didn't say Teanna when he was talking about the Trump he was cool with?
When’s the last time y’all read a ringer article? I’ve listened to 3 podcasts this week and haven’t been to their website in 2020
I just listen to four podcasts: BS Report, Russillo, Rewatcheables and Big Picture and the Rewatch is the only one I listen to every week. I havent listened to Bill and Ryen in about two weeks. NBA bubble talk and bitching about MLB doesn’t interest me. I never go to their website.
In today’s podcast description Finally Bill talks with his daughter, Zoe Simmons, about teen culture during quarantine (1:41:06).
Today’s podcast was hot fucking garbage. Brings in a new nfl guy and spends who knows how long talking about the fucking real world. I fast forwarded and he was asking Bill about MJs license plate and what drink Bill ordered 10 years ago. I gave up and deleted. The mismatch wasn’t great but I give fuck all about the real world
and who, coincidentally, had just been lit ablaze on twitter this week for suggesting the media was "rooting for the Virus" in response to people discussing facts and reality. Great timing and awareness.
