I hate when this thread gets bumped. Hopefully nothing comes from this. Florida doesn’t need more problems right now. Same goes for every other state as well.

with the current projections, we are looking at a bad thunderstorm. It's not going to be a big deal.

Even this storm heard it was headed to the west coast and changed sides

11am (only minor changes in current location). Tropical Tidbits raised the odds it becomes a hurricane to 70% and a major hurricane to 10%

Don't need this rain. Lake O is high and big toxic algae bloom going on. Would be a disaster for SW Florida and the east coast

West Palm is a bunch of pretentious, greedy New Yorkers but with that being said I do like it. Really Broward up to there I enjoy, but our (Gulf) beaches and people are superior and that is without a doubt. East and West can both claim Key West for argument sake.

    St. Pete > Tampa also

The latest advisory has it heading more toward my island but it doesn't figure to be super intense. Everything here is made with a hurricane in mind, so a cat 1 should do us bad. Maybe lose power for a day. Honestly I prefer it to hit my island than the previous course of it wrecking the lobster fishing grounds. Hopefully it doesn't intensify much. Saharan dust seems to be our friend.

My brother is captain of a boat and they basically used this year as a maintenance winter. Barely any of the places they stopped at were anywhere close to operational. They went to a few spots in southern Bahamas and chilled in Fort Lauderdale/Miami for Super Bowl. Otherwise they spent winter mostly up in Virginia lol

Most of the Bahamas is fine, but Abaco still isn't back to rights. The outer Abaco cays are getting there but Marsh Harbour took the brunt of it and I honestly don't think it will ever get back to rights. Marsh Harbour was the biggest settlement in the Bahamas outside Nassau and Grand Bahama and it basically got erased due to the intensity of the storm and the lay of the land. Think New Orleans Katrina type situation with flooding. Most people that lived there have just resigned themselves to moving on to other islands/countries. It's a shit show. Grand Bahama has fared better. Marsh Harbour was just a different project altogether because of the level of destruction and the poor location, hurricane-wise.

I was minimally impacted personally. We got maybe 50-60mph here and never lost power. I expect if a cat 1 hits us here we'll lose power for a day maybe but it won't be too bad. Dorian was a different beast.

I'm ~50 miles NE of Nassau on Eleuthera. Rose island is a few miles off Nassau.

Is your buddy the guy that has the boat that can do like 70mph? One of his caretakers comes here fairly often in his boat and it's something to see.

For some reason I thought you were from Marsh Harbour, which is mostly why I asked. That's terrible for the people there, but as you say, these are generational things...you just leave when it happens. Sad.

I figured in the scheme of tropical events this one was low on the radar. I'm hoping to visit sometime in the next year. My wife and I had planned on a 10th anniversary trip either by cruise or plane last year, and Bahamas seemed manageable financially and fun, but of course that was put on hold. That said, I have lots of time to look now...

Hope the recovery continues. Birmingham is very service/tourist based now for new growth, so I understand (to some extent) what island economies must be dealing with now. It sucks.

Yeah the tourism thing kinda threw a wrench into everything. We really should have a more diverse economy but politicians here continually double and triple down on the tourism industry. That's a different discussion but the result is that covid has hit us pretty hard economically.

Im very fortunate in that my main job isn't tied to tourism but I bartend part time during my job's off-season and my wife runs BOH at a restaurant. We've definitely felt it so I know a lot of people even more tied to it have felt it. It's rough. Just hoping lobster prices haven't fallen too far. Season starts August 1st but we won't be able to do much until probably Tuesday in true 2020 fashion

Honestly a Cat 1 is more or a pain in the ass with having to do annoying shit than it is a cause for concern if you're not in an area prone to heavy flooding. Yard work, shutters, moving stuff around, fences, stuff like that. And then you gotta go out in a few days and do it all again in reverse.

Beats the hell out of having to do all that and having serious worries on top of it for a cat 4-5 or something though

We don’t even bother with shutters for a cat 1. Just bring in the large outdoor patio shit

Cat 1 is just an annoyance. Cat 2 you get a little pissed because you start thinking it might break some stuff like outdoor lights and tree branches. Cat 3 is just enough to put up shutters, but you’re not in fear for your life. You get more serious at Cat 4.

I lived in Miami during hurricane Andrew and a Cat 5 is nothing to fuck with. Was seriously concerned about making it through alive at one point.

It's probably not necessary, I feel it's possible for a coconut or any other projectile to hit my window with it blowing 90. I don't have impact windows. Figure throwing up shutters beats replacing a window.

I don’t think I’ve ever been worried enough to put up shutters. However, I have put up shutters many times because my family is so worked up about a possible hurricane that I’d rather have them put their energy into doing something instead of sitting around and worrying about shit we can’t control

    Same about Andrew

In the bathroom with my family and a mattress up against the door, hoping the roof didn’t fly off. Luckily our house was new enough that the roof held (had to be replaced after obviously) while all the windows blew out. Will always remember the constant howling of the winds.

My Mom was a Dade County sheriff and told me there were just bodies laying all over the place down in Homestead. Trailers were just shredded like paper.

I was about to turn 2 when Andrew hit so obviously I don't remember it or the aftermath, but I've heard my dad say how scared he was just hearing the suction of the roof trying to peel off. Next door neighbors lost their whole roof and had to run into the cellar. Uncle had to take off during the eye to his FILs house. Shit sounded crazy. We got a direct hit here in Floyd too and that was a big storm but nothing on Andrew's caliber. It hit south Florida I guess the next day just as strong.

We didn't have power for almost 6 months so I'm kinda glad I was 2 and almost surely didn't give a shit.

Should get pretty close to the center of this one based on the track.

Thankfully the bad stuff should miss FL but hopefully not bad in the Bahamas as well.

Just moved all the stuff that could take flight inside and moving my car to a parking garage in the am since I park outside but not putting the shutters up, could have the all up in 5-10 minutes if needed.

Hope everyone is safe but would sacrifice El Tiburon if needed

At some point during the outage my parents acquired a small generator that could give them running water, lights and some other basics. No A/C though which I'm sure sucked. Basically the entire electrical infrastructure had to be rebuilt from stratch for the whole island. Almost all the poles were down. They naturally focused their efforts on essential businesses before worrying about each pocket of residential buildings.
