The best part... Sankey, who earned a $2.5 million salary in 2018, responded: “Part of our work is to bring as much certainty in the midst of this really strange time as we can so you can play football in the most healthy way possible, with the understanding there aren’t any guarantees in life."
It’s all the players’ fault, not the fact that they hamfistedly opened up a sport in the middle of a pandemic while hopping around from city to city and being exposed much more than the average citizen. Unless you bubblin’, you failin’.
Hey dude, they put a "please wear a mask" sign up on the clubhouse door. What more could MLB have possibly done?????
He’s a former DC labor law attorney who first served as outside counsel to MLB in the late ‘80s. He became very close to Bud Selig (previous commissioner) in the early 90s and played a role in every CBA negotiation since 1990. He became an MLB employee as lead CBA negotiator in ‘98 (EVP of blah blah blah) once Selig was made official commissioner. He took over as COO the year before Selig retired in a clear move for a continuous line of succession.
In fairness to Manfred, who I hate, if this is true (and based on the source being a former player, I believe it might be true) the blame is being placed properly.
Weird. It was just about NDs latest round of testing. Another round of 0 positives here. Students started coming back to camps today though for the fall semester
Care to explain why? Unless I’m missing something, all he said was that the players need to do better to keep the season going. If players are going out, they need to do better.
Because it glosses over the concept of playing during an uncontrolled pandemic in the first place. While yes, the players could be smarter about it, MLB is putting the onus on labor to take care of themselves over them going out of their way to take care of their employees. They have players sitting in non-socially distanced clubhouses during rain delays.
Manfred isn’t even making teams follow the protocols they put into place so him blaming the players makes him a hypocritical jackass
There's going to be irresponsible people. I'm sure there are covid truthers on baseball teams. You're exposing numerous other people who might be being responsible, to this person. You're interconnecting all these people, exactly what you're not supposed to do during a pandemic to play a sport.
It's like blaming the guy who catches covid from a co-worker because their boss is making them work closely in an office.
What more could MLB do? I’m not trying to be a dick, I’m seriously wondering as I didn’t really follow the protocols put in place. I had assumed that since the MLBPA agreed that the protocols were fine. Though I’m not sure a good location actually existed, the MLBPA is why there isn’t a bubble site. Players understandably didn’t want to be isolated from their families for that long during a pandemic. And I’m not glossing over the fact that there is a pandemic, but I think the decision to play at all during one is a different discussion than that of what happens after the the decision to play was made. Again, I hate Manfred. I just don’t think saying the players need to do better if the teams with outbreaks had players go out is out of line.
Actually it’s closer to blaming your co-worker for going out to party at clubs against what everyone agreed to do and getting you sick instead of blaming the boss.
This is a fair criticism. But at some point the MLBPA also needs to also criticize its player members for not following the protocols. Can’t have it both ways.
Not play, for one. Otherwise, have specific consequences for when players go off-script. Certainly not keep them cooped up during rain delays and most certainly not put the onus on the players to decide whether or not to play when people are sick (like the Marlins did before their last game because there was no directive from the league). The NBA lets people go off-script but has a specific protocol they have to follow to come back if they do. MLB is half-assing this and it shows. And as the boss it’s Manfred’s job to handle this shit, not mostly blame the employees who went awry.
a reminder that #National League guys like myself and devine have been saying for years that manfred is a moron who is actively destroying the game while AL fans arrogantly clapped along in support of him because “lol universal dh” it is with the heaviest of hearts that i must announce that the bunt bros were right yet again
So we blamed the players for not starting because they were being greedy and now it’s the players fault that we may have to stop, am I keeping up?
