    - first week is Sept 7-12 ( COVID pending)
-13 week schedule, 10 conference games + 1 non conference game (2 open dates)
-all non conference must be played in home state of the ACC institution
-Notre Dame is eligible for the ACC Championship Game
-there is only 1 division, so top 2 records play the title game

Up 20-17 to down 38-20 in less than 30 seconds of game time is remarkable.

you’re underestimating the historical futility of NC State football. Winning 9 games in back to back years like DD did very rarely happens.

To be fair there's no real reason for that other than AD incompetence.

State has a solid campus, is located in a major metro area that produces football talent, and has a fanbase that cares about football.

I disagree, there are some real structural impediments. Our resources (money mostly) are in the bottom tier of P5 schools; we are surrounded on all sides by schools with superior resources. Our fans care in the sense that they’ll show up to games (for the first half anyway) but they don’t give a lot of money.

further, the Triangle doesn’t really produce that much football talent (yet anyway). And even when it does produce an inordinate amount, UNC will almost always out-recruit us due to most everyone in the state loving UNC basketball.

I think it’s mostly an anomaly that we haven’t had a year like Wake in 2006 or whatever year that was but having a consistently strong program is basically impossible. We’ll probably fire DD in a year or 2 and hire another mid-major coach who will do no better.

So with the dominoes all starting to fall and the ACC "staying the course," how long do we realistically think it takes before football gets cancelled? Does it happen before the season or mid-season?

I think there is a good chance is happens. No fans for sure though for it to happen.

They have already pushed things back to weeks after schools return. That will allow them to navigate the “flare up” of cases being reported at the schools. These flare ups will be caused by people coming with the virus from hot spots. With the schools doing proper testing and tracing this could be controlled. Then playing the sport isn’t that dangerous. They are in their community bubble and when traveling they are pretty isolated with charters and team hotels. I really think this can be safely navigated. It just takes sacrifices and changes.

hope that ramble makes sense. I’m not great at putting my thoughts into written form.

by all accounts things are going decently well at UNC, so I guess I wouldn't be shocked to see a game or two played before all hell breaks loose, assuming the students on campus don't trigger that beforehand

Sure, but where is it going to come from after this initial burst of people to town? For the most part it has been quite in Blacksburg cases wise. To my knows some athletes have tested positive when they came back, but nothing has popped since their initial come back test. Would that not be possible for the general school population as well?

edit: to add on to that, how does playing the sports add to the transmission? Why does that need to be stopped?

The small college towns probably have a better chance of isolation than the city campuses, but all it takes is students going home for a weekend and partying with their HS friends from all over, and bringing it back. NC State returned last weekend and driving down Hillsborough St was a covid nightmare. Just hordes of students, no masks, no distancing. Its way easier to quarantine 100 football players and their staff when they’re the only ones on campus. Are all those hormone raging athletes, who are used to doing what they want, gonna go celibate for the next 4 months? It’s going to fail.

Explaining why an almost exclusively face to face contact sport brings risk of spreading an aerosolized virus seems unnecessary.

Not to mention you could have a low level of community spread = One student has it who only passes it to 2-3 other students who then might only pass it on to 1 new person etc.... Keeps a low level of spread but then you have one idiot go get sick and go to a bar and then you have 50+ new cases and it starts to boil over. All campuses will struggle with those.

I also just cant help but feel like football is the perfect storm for COVID. Sure, there’s plenty of contact in other sports but pretty much every football play includes hundreds of different human-to-human contacts. All it takes is one guy on the team to slip up and there’s 45 positives on a team and they’re looking at forfeiting games.

At this point I can see one game being played but inevitably a couple players are going to test positive and the whole thing will be shut down. The question will be do they shut it down for 14 days and attempt a restart or push off to the spring.

I am genuinely surprised we haven’t heard about more case outbreaks, but I guess I’m equally skeptical of college coaches to reveal it too.

FSU has a policy to not publicly disclose covid case numbers on the football team. I assume the policy extends to all sports and maybe even to the general campus population (including employees). I think it’s not outrageous to believe there are other programs with a similar policy.

This will complicate things for the programs which experienced many cases in June and July. Per the CDC, the 3 month self-isolation exemption will expire in September for those infected in June, and in October for those infected in July. This assumes the schools follow the CDC guidance, and that it doesn’t change. Quite a few FSU and Clemson players are in this boat. I’m not sure about other programs.
