I haven't listened to rewatchables in months. love the show but I just have not seen all these 80s and 90s movies. only movie i have seen is Sandlot and I haven't watched that movie in 15+ years. I'm going to the list right now and I haven't even heard of most of these movies.

I'm guessing a lot of those movies had their 25-40 year anniversaries recently or coming up. They like to do that a lot

I'm very ignorant when it comes to union stuff, so I'm just curious when I ask this...

Do most unions make as much stuff public as the Ringer union seems to? I guess I don't remember other media unions on social media this much with all their disagreements, but then most sites/companies don't have a thread on here so maybe I'm just not paying enough attention.

most other media unions are similar from my limited experience, especially as the ringer execs seem to be on the more abrasive end regarding negotiations

I follow the head of the LA Times union (i think hes the head), and lots of stuff get disseminated

It’s uncharted territory. Media companies only really started to unionize in 2015 w Gawker.

Is that a thing? They’ve got a New York office (which is more expensive than LA, but still, the employees don’t commute to it from Cali), and off the top of my head, Shea, Tjarks, and Vernon don’t live in either location.

To my last breath I will never understand how Russillo ever got one second of air time on ESPN, let alone a career that allowed him to make real estate purchases like that.

Right, I get that Shaker says it’s a thing, but I’m asking about all the other employees who say they don’t live in LA. Are they lying?

I imagine, I hesitate to say this, "talent" have the option on where to live in many cases. Regular staff do not.

just saying he's on the writing staff, they have something silly like 90-100 full time employees

    maybe 1/3 of those are writers/podcasters? 1/2?

Yeah I’d imagine it’s more of a production-side/content-side thing, which makes sense logistically even if the remote work under quarantine has undercut that model.

Although Shaker is apparently a writer too in addition to his editorial responsibilities so who knows.

Maybe I just have a hard time relating to that specific gripe because the thought of living anywhere other than where I work has never been an option for me. I totally get the draw of an untethered career, but I’d never expect it from an employer unless that’s how it was advertised.

providing a living wage based around the community you're required to live is a good thing for unions to work on

Well then I don't know. I thought when the diversity stuff came out a month or two ago, the quotes from the union talking about staff and podcasts were just those on the writing staff and didn't include people like Van Lathan. I may have that wrong, though.

I totally agree, I was just speaking to the location comment.

Although reflecting a bit more on his statement, I will say that nearly 50k/year for a 25 yr old blogger and fact checker doesn’t sound terrible at all, even in a high COL location like LA. And the fact that they increased his comp 50% in two years kinda flies in the face of his assertion that he had no clear path towards promotion or raises. Hopefully he finds something else he likes better tho.

    Agree 100%

Comparing an intern in their early twenties to a guy twenty years older who worked at ESPN and has a popular podcast isnt the same. Ryen should make more. My first job I made $30k a year out of school. Welcome to the real world.

He just always needs to feel like the smartest in the room. Also loved how Bill had his own draft rankings as a result of reading KOC's draft stuff and re-ordering it himself without having seen any of the players at all.

I listened for a bit to start last night until Simmons shit on the Pistons and I stopped. There were definitely some weird Russillo/KOC moments, like Russillo crushing Larry Nantz and KOC going "uh, he was good last year". Simmons' obsession with Young/Doncic is also weird because KOC thinks Young is really good and Simmons will just never be able to get past the trade part.

In fairness to Russillo on this particular thing, I don't think he respects or hates KOC. I think he's just gotten to the point where he views himself as an NBA analyst and talks like an asshole when he does it. He acts very differently on that stuff when he's hosting a pod and talking to someone like KOC than he does when he's on with Simmons and he's the "guest" there. Or, at least he did when I used to listen to his stuff. Maybe he's like that as a host now, too.

I also think part of the Russillo/KOC thing is that Russillo can be super negative about anything and likes trashing stuff, and KOC seems more like one of those "the NBA is awesome and I love everyone" NBA media types when I've read/heard him on stuff.

its just a no-win spot for KOC overall because he's grouped with an ex NBA player, his idiot boss, and a macho dbag who thinks he's above all blogger types. Hard to pick your spots with the dynamic involved with each of those guys, even though he knows more about current NBA than any of them pound for pound.
