This doesn't surprise me. The consensus before tropical season started was for an above normal year in number of tropical systems (something in the vicinity of 20 named storms or so), and we have been outpacing even those expectations so far. The next week to 10 days or so should be fairly quiet across the Atlantic, but conditions become quite a bit more favorable for tropical development the second half of August. I'd be surprised if we didn't get multiple storms to form in pretty quick succession once we get to the 3rd/4th weeks of August, though it's way too early to say if any of these would have a US impact.
Sophomore year, fucking hell I feel old. Charley would've fucked destroyed Tampa if it hadn't turned.
I was supposed to be flying into orlando the next day. They let me on the plane in Portland and when I got to KC I was told the flights to Orlando had all been canceled. Got super mad because they could have told me that in Portland and now I was stuck in trash ass KC airport. Proceeded to spend the next 10 hours alternating getting drunker at the bar and going to the ticket booth to bitch people out until they finally got me on a flight to Tampa
It hit my house in the middle of the night. Was eerie as hell. Then walking out the next morning to see the damage. Will never forget that.
I was managing at a Steak N Shake back then, it was my shift the day Charlie hit and when I went in, it was still headed to Tampa. One of my servers comes up to me during lunch saying it had turned and was headed toward us. We had like three hours to shut the store down (usually only closed twice a year) and get everyone out of there. I got home about an hour before the weather went south, just enough time to get stuff brought inside and help my neighbor do the same. Will never forget listening to the storm beat on the garage door all night, then walking around looking at all the damage the next morning. We were out of power for a week. my parents were NW of Port Charlotte and missed the eyewall by about 5 miles.
Question. When did we start using the term cyclone for here? I thought cyclones are what occurred on the other side of the world.
If it’s above the North Atlantic, central North Pacific or eastern North Pacific oceans (Florida, Caribbean Islands, Texas, Hawaii, etc.), we call it a hurricane. If it hovers over the Northwest Pacific Ocean (usually East Asia), we call it a typhoon. If it’s circling over any other region, we continue to call it a tropical cyclone.
Nice. Haven’t heard that one in forever. I’ve recently been jamming to the Big Tymers station on Pandora. I’ve been doing some college nostalgia.
My concern level with it that far out is very little but definitely need to keep an eye on it. Thanks for the heads up.
Good thread here on the ensembles you see on Twitter. It's always framed as "wow, all the members are very consistent (low spread), therefore confidence is high the actual storm will be within the spread". Reality is not as neat and tidy
Leaving Houston for the first time in 7 months for Mexico tomorrow. I guess I’ll just watch my Ring camera and hope it doesn’t get too bad or stall out. Our house is about a year old and is pier & beam so this will be the first real test. The damn washer will shake the house if too many towels are in it so I’m a little skeptical but shouldn’t be too extreme (fingers crossed).
Louisiana is getting fucked twice, scary stuff. Not sure how strong they'll be but two this close is nuts.
