I could be wrong but I seem to recall that Nolan kept the Joker alive because he wanted him to have a relationship with Batman in the 3rd film

would have been cool to have Ledger play a Hannibal Lecter type figure for Batman.

Nolan was supposedly going to have the Joker come back in his third film but that obviously couldn't happen. I think it would have been much better than what we ultimately ended up with.

I don’t believe it was supposed to be a big part though, pretty much a cameo IIRC

That may be true. I really don't know. I do know Dark Knight Rises is the most disappointed I've ever been leaving a theater.

Nolan didn't even want to make a 3rd movie, and is on record saying he had no plans to include Joker in it.

But David Goyer, on the other hand, had an original draft after Batman Begins where Joker would be the main villain in the 2nd movie, then the 3rd would focus on Harvey Dent prosecuting him. Joker would then throw the acid in Dent's face, and it goes from there

Definitely better than Tom Hardy as Bane.

I just thought it was too outlandish. We went from a very grounded crime film with Dark Knight to a group of mercenaries holding a city hostage for months. And I thought Tom Hardy was really bad as Bane.

There were some really great “moments” throughout the film, but the overall story wasn’t that remarkable.

I feel the same way about the holding Gotham hostage. Just didn’t fit the mold of the first two films that were going for the realistic approach.

thought that too when I saw the movie, but idk if I read it somewhere or what but I thought the cameo would have been when Bane freed the prisoners

could just have been a fan theory

TDKR is a solid animated movie and they’re making TLH animated (also the new movie is influenced by TLH)

    unless you mean live action

Side bar, you guys ever seen the theory that Seven takes place in Gotham? I don't think Fincher actually had that in mind but it never says in the film what city it takes place in and it does have a lot in common with Gotham. Kind of makes Seven an interesting rewatch with this in mind.

No more origin movies unless they’re telling a brand new story please.

I hope to never see Krypton explode or the Waynes and Uncle Ben gunned down, in a movie again.

I mean, it’s close between the two and at one point I’d have said TDK but as time goes on I just find I enjoy the way they handled the origin and the way they fit Batman into a grounded reality to be really interesting. Also the third act of TDK for me just knocks it below BB in general.

I didn’t initially like TDKR but I’ve come to like it after rewatches. It’s still rungs below the other two though and probably my least favorite Nolan film

Eh to me the Dark Knight is a cinematic masterpiece about two extremely interesting characters, not sure any comic book movie on its own that compares

    most movies can’t compare

I kind of agree. But I feel like Bruce/Batman was too much of a reactive character in TDK.

He had much more depth in BB and even TDKR.

I feel the same way (wrt them being exceptional films and the gold standard for CB movies) about both movies. BB is just consistently good throughout while TDK kinda loses its way twords the end. Just MO though and people rarely ever agree with me

I think the only one that comes close is the Winter Soldier. Def feels more like a 70s/80s conspiracy thriller than a traditional comic book movie but nowhere close to what TDK did

    Exactly.

Great art illustrates central truths or conflicts of the human condition; TDK isn’t really about Batman vs. Joker; it’s about the roles of chaos and order in society; specifically the cost of order and the temptation to chaos. The characters symbolize pure versions of each and are magnified by the duality of Two-Face.

If the new Batman gets close to that, I’ll be pleased as punch.

I would say Winter Soldier is the closest they have came as it's basically an espionage film but still leagues behind TDK.

Also, I don't hate TDKR. It was just a major disappointment. The bar was set impossibly high and I just don't think it fits that well in the trilogy from a believability standpoint.
