While I’m sure this loosened things up this has already happened, I’ve worked for captains that were former inmates. This is one topic the media typically skews poorly.

Before wasn't it up to localities who they hire? Though I thought Cal fire didn't hire people with a record. Not sure if the feds would or not for firefighting. Expunging the record should've happened a long time ago

Also, let me tell you, if you don’t live in Oregon (or even if you do) if somebody tries to blame this on antifa you just answer, ‘no, they would have burned forest park.’

Anybody that has been to Portland or lives here knows if you really wanted to fuck shit up you start a bunch of fires in the largest urban park full of trees in the COUTRY (that also overlooks downtown, sits next to million dollar homes, hundreds of thousands of dollar condos, business and separates the metro from East to west as
    much as the Willamette River).

If these people were *truly* trying to fuck over the establishment, they wouldn’t go into the middle of a national park area they almost *for sure* fucking love.

No, they would go sacrifice a giant fucking urban park that’s next to a lot of shit they fucking hate.

Or a random spark from somebody doing yard work, a cig out the truck, or somebody actually trying to do it...which happens a ton, but likely not from antifa laughing as they light the place up. If that person is an arsonist, and isn’t really thinking about an agenda, they (literally) just like to watch the world burn!

(or a fucking stupid gender reveal party. In that case both sides can come into question for utter dipshittery)

When you can sub out a job that pays 15K/month to free prison labor it’d be un-American not to do it.

Did a quick read after posting the question.
It read (to me) like they wanted to release former fire fighters that are now in prison, which brings up a host of other questions. Makes sense now

Let me do my best far-right conspiracy theory.

Drew Carey is part owner of the Sounders, the hated rival of the Timbers, a Portland team who represents the forest and has a mascot, named Timber Joey, that is a lumberjack.

Drew obviously was mad about the recent loss to the Timbers (And them winning the MLS is back tourney) at home so he decided to get fat again, in the last couple days, came to Oregon and got his revenge by burning down the trees so the next tifo, when the fans are back, at Century Link Field, can be really awesome.

He will also not allow another person in the public to win in the cliffhanger price is right game because the mountain and trees remind him too much of his nemesis to the south winning.

He ends every conversation with ‘the price is wrong, Jim.’ Because he hates the former Timbers mascot even more (and because he loathes Bob fucking Barker)

No they pay minimum security inmates $4.63 per day to fight fires. A job that pays a non-inmate wildlands firefighter ~$500 per day.

California has a bill that will allow these prison firefighters to have their records expunged as long as they aren’t convicted of sexual or violent crimes so they can be fast-tracked to being a contributing member of society once they get out.

Personally I believe they have always been eligible to be hired this just allows them to change their legal record.

Inmate hand crews are a backbone to Cal Fire and do the same job as a Forest Service hot shot crew or Type 1 hand crew. There are
probably 2k +/- inmate firefighters during a normal year, but this year they have shut down a number of camps due to COVID outbreaks and are running short handed. Numbers in the camp system have been declining for a bit now due to reductions in penalties for drug related offenses plus Californias early release program. In the future I wouldn't be surprised to see less inmate hand crews and an increase in firefighter hand crews.

Its hard work but in general I think its a good rehabilitation program that gets a negative skew.

    -It's voluntary
-You get to leave prison and are sent to a very low security camp (think no fences) in the mountains or somewhere remote
-In the winter they do fuel reduction work or community improvements at say a local park.
-Far better pay than in prison jobs (better food for that matter too)
-Gives guys a solid paycheck to get them on their feet when they leave the prison system.
-Gives them experience in a trade
-Cal Fire opened a camp in December of 2018 thats specifically for training former inmates into FF's. I actually interviewed a graduate of that program last year.

    https://www.vcstar.com/story/news/2020/01/31/cal-fire-parolee-program-ventura-county/4578393002/

    Just my own opinion.

Yea its a combination of factors, just like every issue. Its not just solely climate change although that does play a part (and could increase in the future).

California is a state that historians believe burned 5+ million acres a year pre gold rush days and over the past 100 years we have completely altered the natural equation of things. The biggest issue is that what the public perceives as a healthy forest is a relic of 100 years of fire suppression and is actually unnatural. It will take a combination of VMP's, fuel reduction projections, logging, and active forest management over a decade to reduce this problem and bring it into some sort of a balance, unfortunately it takes events like this to stimulate change.

Going forward hopefully more and more people will take defensible space seriously. The update to the CA building code in 2008 did a lot for home hardening in rural areas and the survivability % has showed on recent fires.

    Again just my own opinion.

i think most that are in fire camps are low level offenders who probably shouldn’t be in jail so they should be released to go work on fire crews.

I think most typical offenses are theft, drugs (selling/using), burglary, etc.

Can’t be convicted for arson, sex crimes, or violent crimes.

Also I think the criminal record helps most with the ability for these individuals to get an EMT license, if you are a convicted felon you can’t get one.

EMT is a typical basic requirement to get hired as a firefighter.

Yup we have the same issues in Wyoming going too hard on suppression to protect the ranchers and parks. One of the biggest indicators is our vast aspen forests have mostly vanished in favor of conifers. When settlers arrived the western US was covered in aspen due to the regular natural fires that encouraged their propagation. A century of altering that ecology through active managements has created pockets of aspen islands amidst an ocean of pines.
