Most conifers are fire adapted species, and the parks are certainly managed for healthy fire to keep the ecosystems healthy, not suppression.
Possibly in the evening with something more steady Tuesday. At least there was humidity in the air this AM.
probably not until Tuesday in the willamette valley. Coastal winds should be here Monday though to make the air quality a little bit better.
Right but there’s a difference between being fire adapted and fire dependent. A fire adapted species will outcompete a fire dependent species over time under either a complete suppression regime or a controlled burn regime. It’s a devil’s choice scenario because we’re obviously not going to offer up people’s homes and lives as sacrificial lambs, nor should we, but it absolutely will alter the ecosystem. The Parks Dept policies have certainly improved recently, but it wasn’t until the Great Yellowstone Fire of ‘88 that nation-wide traction developed for a mixed-management system. At that point you’re dealing with almost a century’s worth of undergrowth that is, quite literally, a tinderbox waiting to explode.
I know. I work for DOI so I'm very familiar with the fire policies. They definitely fucked up in the past and are still recovering from shitty ass smoky bear convincing people fire is evil, but generally it's headed in a good direction. They certainly are playing catch up and that's not an easy fix once you fall behind. And Aspen disappearing has a lot more to it than just fire.
weather service let us know we're getting smoky haze today, noticed last night the sunset was bright red and hazy i'm in minnesota
You can tell they are antifa because they yell "death to fascism" when they start the fires alone in the woods
Maybe I'm just getting used to it but aqi is currently 344 (hazardous) where I live and it doesn't seem that bad
Your telling me dude, I wish i hated this car enough to sell it. Thats why I do most my own labor though.
I saw clouds and the sky for the first time in days today. Horrible air quality around me but it’s clearing out higher up.
Not just the sun, but could actually make out clouds in the sky. My kids were excited to see a sun beam in our house.
Pretty fun NYT daily pod from Oregon this morning with a bunch of gun nuts worried about antifa looters attacking their homes during the wildfires because of Facebook. Score another one for Zuck.
Electricians on the job site were sharing a video today of Antifa lighting fires in Oregon. The sheriff department tweet of antifa not setting fires and looting evacuation areas was fake news. Some people are just a lost cause.
Figured I would post this here in case anyone wants to donate. The majority of people who lost their homes in Southern Oregon were low income families who didn’t have insurance.
We don’t have a cloud in sight and it’s hazy here, like I can look at the sun. I’m in eastern PA like 20 minutes to Jersey.
My aunt lives in Ashland but taught a Phoenix for decades. She is distraught over this as it just ripped through multiple trailer parks full of low income minorities Fucking climate change.
also I'm actually finally starting to feel the effects of the exposure I have coworkers who were mentioning stuff like migraines, watery eyes, headaches previously... I'm definitely feeling respiratory shit this morning
