Awesome pack, but at 60L, 7-8 days and that weight is certainly the max I could go. Prolly could have squeezed a bit more, but not much.

It’s my UL pack so I haven’t really ever gone over 30 in it. I’ve got an old Arc’teryx Bora that’s from prolly 2006 that is fucking bulletproof that I used for guiding that I roll with still for most stuff. It’s absurdly comfortable. I got the wife one for herself too. I’m 100% an Arc’teryx backpack fanboi. Their casual and hiking pants suck ass tho

I wore these bad boys with grey ankle socks, some grey shorts, and a light blue t-shirt for a walk around the neighborhood today. My wife told me I looked like Beavis.

I saw that, the new design looks good and hopefully they make more available.

Mostly because I don't like the idea of paying retail to try them in case there's product issues

How does the Olympus cushioning compare to Hoka? Lone Peak was ass for cushioning.

Fo sho. Worth it. It's like being constantly hugged by a gang of St Bernard puppies. Even in the wind and rain. Looked at their UL rain jacket but just can't spend that much. Can get the Zpack for about half.

Do you actually get a permit for that specific hike? I would thing you'd have to reserve the 8/9 campsites/regions you stay at along the way. I haven't looked into it, though.

I did just spend 5 minutes -- it's pretty infuriating that there is not a uniform reservation system for the National Parks. Each NP in Washington has a different process/website/portal. Yosemite was completely different as well.

You can do a walk up but you do need a some sort of reservation/permit for the agenda you want for the hike. To be fair the last time I looked this up was two years ago.

When I did the JMT in 2016 you still had to fax in your permit applications. It's an adventure...

All we need now is a pack for LadyPokes so we can hit up the best overnights here. Thinking of a Deuter, Kelty, or Marmot (suck it Randy Dangus, jk enjoyed the pack smack talk).

Anyone ever use those pony express satchels for dog food/water? I have one buddy who swears by them but he’s got a big meat hook of a lab and I dunno if my dainty ladies can handle the weight.

I think my pointer could probably deal w it ok but my collie rolls like an Arkham Asylum patient. Also just generally concerned w the extra weight on their backs.

We take one of those collapsible rubber bowls when we hike w them; it’s a clip-on that weighs nothing. A bed seems kinda extreme, is that for cold-weather hunting?

No, this was backpacking. It was an inflatable mini sleeping pad made for that purpose. I bet it weighed 6-8 ounces.

No worries. I understand. I was mostly asking which models are good versus bad. For example, the some of the running shoes are rated poorly while some are highly rated. I was probably flippant with my question .

Lone peaks are very popular. I prefer Timps. Edit: *Superior’s are no go territory for me. I love Olympus too, haven’t slipped into the new model.

Don’t have much experience with their road models outside of the Torin. Love them. Have a pair of HIITs as well. But don’t wear them much since I haven’t gone to the gym since covid started.

I always get superiors and escalates mixed up

Thanks. I’m a big Escalante fan as far as road shoes go. Well, the 1.5s, as the 2s were subpar supposedly. Word is that the 2.5s are more similar to the 1.5s.

    Thanks again.

Update - ended up purchasing this one, seems to be the most highly rated under $1500 outside of the ARB Simpson III. Everything else in that price class was reviewed as cheap / not durable.

    https://www.4wheelparts.com/p/smittybilt-gen2-overlander-tent-2583/_/R-DSBP-2583

Ratings on that site look average, but they're mostly about things that happened during shipping (forklift through the box, etc....). Very well reviewed elsewhere and on a few different camping / off-roading forums. Psyched to get out west man.

May kop wes tegg new hiking shoes and a mattress topper, but outside that I'm ready to roll.

Calves and quads were a little tight, but overall great. I could've gone more after a day's rest.

Just all about getting used to it/getting in shape. First couple times carrying a big pack is always tough. More you do it, the easier it gets.

Looks like summer in the PNW is finished. Probably the best I've had out here so far. Going to try and sneak in a few more overnight trips but the perfect weather is gone.

Supposed to spend 4 days/3 nights in Yosemite in about 2 weeks...not looking great, bob.

Are there burn bans in the Appalachians?

Basically from late July until October you can't have a fire due to how dry everything gets. And no fires over 5,000 ft.

Does anyone know why a dog would be running loose through the woods with a collar with a big antenna on it? Saw 2 in Pisgah Forest this weekend. Somebody told me it had to do with hunting bears but idk. Annoying as hell to have dogs running around with no person to handle them
