Eberle had been ice cold so maybe that gets him going for Thursday.

Figured the Islanders were dead in the water with Beauvillier in the box at the end of the third/start of OT but happy they could find a way.

I assume Point will be back for Game 6 so that’ll be even more firepower for Tampa. Looking forward to Thursday night, even though these game are obviously super stressful.

Just a bad break there for Shattenkirk, not sure how the hell he whiffed on that. Hopefully the Lightning can end this Thursday, certainly had their chances to tonight.

I can't believe how cold their first line has gone in its entirety in this series. I'm sure a lot of that had to do with going up against Hedman et al, but they're the first line for that team. They have one job and they haven't really done it at all.

That bad? Staal is not getting any younger. Obviously Johansson is not a prospect anymore either. Money was an issue?

wild need centers and they traded a center that’s still serviceable on a team that just had a down year for a winger

And this is why the only thing I can think of is this trade is to set up a more significant trade for a quality center for someone like Dumba and one of the younger wingers on the roster (Greenway, Kunin, etc.).

As bad as the goaltending was this year, center is still a more pressing need than goalie. Without Staal, our top two centers are now Eriksson Ek and Bjugstad.

these things have lied to me a few times though, mainly the subban /Weber trade. All the projections were pointing to Nashville winning that trade...and mtl easily won it.

hard to really judge a player when he is playing for the sabres. I still believe you guys are going to be right in the end

I mean have they though? Subban was the far better player the first couple years while Weber has been injured for most of the time since the trade. He's also got 6 years left on that contract at a point where it will be very difficult to trade him. I don't know how to call that a win. Subban regressed far earlier than anyone thought, but the predators were smart enough to dump him before the rest of the NHL caught on.

yes they did. And let’s not move the goalpost here, we were talking about what they bring on the ice as players. Weber is clearly the better player right now

i will be clearer, the analytics favored Nashville over Weber for this trade. No contracts, no injuries involved. Now subban is half the player he was while Weber is still the exact same

Right now Weber is better. Subban was the better player in the first 3 years after the trade. Subban clearly has fallen off due to injury, but it's not like Weber has a good injury history. Predators were smart enough to dump Subban before the rest of the league caught on to the regression. The trade is certainly not as lopsided as we all once thought, but I wouldn't call the Habs winners in the deal. They have a 35 y/o defenseman who has missed substantial time in 2 of the last 4 years.

true, I still like the trade right now. Weber is an incredible presence on the ice and in the locker room. These things are not measured with analytics and it’s fine but a good gm will see these things and they matter also.

by the way I did not like the trade back then, liked subban from the get go and I still think he is not done at all.

Off ice presence absolutely matters. You won't find many analytics people who disagree. The argument comes when non-analytical people prop up objectively bad players like Erik Gudbranson as good players because they are good in the room while getting caved in on the ice. But when it comes between one or the other, give me a selfish dick who produces on the ice over the bender who is good in the room every time.
