XSX will come with 1TB that is half as fast as the PS5 ssd. Both have an upgrade slot. Microsoft is requiring XSX owners to buy very specific nvme drives to be able to use XSX tier games, they are rumored to be $220 for 1 TB. Meanwhile Sony isnt requiring that which means the PS5 price is $100 per TB. XSX owners can still use standard nvme, but it will downgrade the games on that ssd to X1X tier.

on the hardware deep dive for PS5 he said that only certain NVMe drives would be certified for full performance

In order to play PS5 games off an external drive it must match or exceed the internal SSD’s performance. Also the PS5 ssd is 825 GB.

I’ve also heard that because of the ssds and other features to increase load times that some game files could be lower. Some games have duplicate files to have the faster loads with the current hardware. That won’t be needed or as needed given the ssds.

However, not every off-the-shelf NVMe drive will work. First, the off-the-shelf SSD needs to physically fit into the M.2 expansion slot in the PS5. Sony also needs to validate the speeds of the different models to ensure compatibility.

Unfortunately, those drives will still be slower than the internal drive, because so few of the currently available PCIe 4.0-based options can match the speed of Sony’s own custom drive. There’s also another problem, and it has to do with how PS5 assigns data priorities.

The internal drive has access to up to six priority levels, whereas the off-the-shelf drives can only have two. The good news is that, for older games (PS4), any USB hard drive will work.

still won’t be able to buy any standard nvme though. Will have to wait to see what they “certify”

I mean I already manage my internal and external HD’s on my one X and even with 24 games total installed I have 400+ gbs available. I maybe play 3-4 games most of the time so HD space isn’t that high on my list.

its still very confusing to me that sony of all people are the ones to develop nvme tech 2-3x faster than anything else on the market

just one example: both xbox and ps5 are using pci gen 4. xbox speed is 2.4 GB/s, ps5 is 5 GB/s

only thing I haven’t seen well enough for me to understand is how the IO difference works with other systems. On what appears to be strictly read/write status you’re right PS5 is just over 2x what Xbox is.

any other pci 4 nvme ive looked at just talk about one i/o throughput speed and i have no idea if that should be compared to the raw or compressed speeds being quoted by these consoles

but, if we compare the supposed cost of the xbox nvme drives to the cost of other pci 4 nvme they would surely have to be talking compressed speed? again, no idea

It's not going to mean anything.

    https://mspoweruser.com/microsoft-xbox-series-x-i-o-throughput-ps5/

tl;dr - Microsoft is much more savvy when it comes to squeezing performance out of its tech so using some "tricks," the Series X will actually have a better I/O throughput than the PS5 regardless of the SSD's raw capabilities.

I don't pay a lot of attention to the "console wars" or whatever but I did see where a bunch of people shit on Microsoft for having big "next gen" games continue to be made available on the current gen for a while and then can't praise Sony enough for doing... the same thing.

console wars are dumb as shit. buy what your friends have so you can game together.

However, Sony Undercutting Microsoft by $100 and only removing the disk drive is going to be huge when it comes to sale numbers.

At this point I think it’s become apparent that Microsoft is looking to get the casuals, which the S will do when you take into account the benefits of Game Pass. I was able to get the PS5 from Target, so I’ll do my heavy gaming there. I’ll still get an S though.

Yeah, I don't see why MS didn't do the same thing. I have no use for the optical drive. I guess maybe they didn't want to have 3 models at launch. The UHD BluRay drives actually do cost around $100 so that's just a straight dollar for dollar subtraction that Sony did and MS should be able to do as well.

I cant really explain why, but I enjoyed xbox one more than ps4. I'll probably end up going Xbox again. I'm not a heavy gamer, mostly use it for home entertainment and play some sports games, so exclusive titles don't mean too much to me.

When can you start pre ordering on Tuesday? Actually off work that day so I should have time to get one

I assume you meant to type price? You can still store games on an external that isn't their semi-proprietary SSD. I think you'd have to swap them to the internal to play them though. But that doesn't take very long at all.

I really wonder if Microsoft had gotten to wait on Sony to release price if they’d have gone $400 for the series x and 250 for the s.

Maybe if the swap was really quick it would be ok. I just can't imagine being limited to 500GB of games in the era of gamepass and next gen file sizes.

Should be pretty quick. Even on the current console it takes maybe 20-30 seconds to move an average-sized game from one HDD to another. Ultimately it will probably take just as long to swap discs as it would to swap files.

100+ games available to download for free anytime, all first party Microsoft games are available on launch date to download and play, the games rotate and change from third party providers but you pay 9.99-14.99 a month and have access to all of them anytime you want. It’s the best deal in gaming.

There is an option called Xbox All Access. Contains the console of choice and game pass ultimate + Xbox live for the different prices. $25 for Series S $35 for Series X per month for 2 years.

Oh, so you get the pass and pay for the console itself in installments over the 2 years. Interesting, I assume it's just a measure to widen the ability to get one for those that normally can't swing that initial outright purchase?

Maybe COVID really had an effect on production but I'd be surprised if there weren't ample amounts of both PS5 and Xbox Series S/X available at launch. Pre-orders sold out last time around for both consoles too then launch day came and they were available everywhere. Maybe the custom SSDs or more advanced cooling systems could complicate things? I don't know.

I've got a PS5 pre-ordered to re-sell in case I'm wrong but I had multiple of each pre-ordered last time around and just ended up canceling/getting my deposits back. Figures the first generation I had disposable income to try something like that the consoles were widely available.

Sony said today they will have more 5s at launch then they did at 4 launch. Also read something saying Xbox can bang out more than Sony and has larger capability to make more than Sony.

you are probably right, but to be safe I’m going to try and snag one early

Correct, when you factor in console cost and the services cost, it actually ends up being about $30-40 cheaper to do the two year pay option I believe is what I read.

Here is where it's "doubling"....it's for the PC version of GamePass from $5 a month to $10. Ultimate is still $15 for GamePass, Gold, EA Play

I am still trying to figure out if I need to cancel my EA Access/EA Play membership since it's now lumped into GPU

So which version is everyone going after?

I was able to get the PS5 disc version, so I’m thinking I’ll just get an S, since I’ll use the Xbox more for Game Pass than anything else. I do have a quite good 4K TV, but at this point I don’t think the upgraded graphics on the X will be enough to sway me.
