Does playing or cancelling work out better? You try to play to have max games for the playoff right? Or do you say fuck it we have 10 even if we miss that one?

If our argument is we deserve to get into the playoffs as a one-loss team over undefeated OSU / UGA / Florida because we played 12 games and they only played 8, the potency goes down when it's just 11 games. I'd rather play all 12.

I mean, it's easy to shift the game to 10/3 given we both have byes next week.

We'd have the guys who missed last week against USF back for that (even though I'm sure they'd be rusty) and even the guys just started 10 day quarantines today. Even if we're missing ~10-12 players, I'm sure they'd rather take a shot at playing vs. not. Unless it's the whole QB room or all a dozen starters, I'd say take the shot and play the game next week. This is assuming that we snuff the outbreak now; obviously if it just gets worse we're in a lot of trouble.

I’m guessing it’s the OL room or something. I would think you would cobble together practice if it was random guys across the roster.

Looks like we’ll play on December 12, which was one of two possible weeks for the acc championship game.

At first, I was taken aback by this news (rumor, but a real source), but considering simple math and those recently testing positive, this makes sense. Could be the guys in tracing, of course. .

More Positives next Monday/Wednesday would be a greater issue.

the best article of the week

1 — Loved BK’s pre-game speech regarding South Florida’s likely desperation on special teams. As our pre-game Instant Analysis shows, great minds think alike.

2 — The Irish open with three tight ends and the 1980s rejoice. I like to think this formation is Brian Kelly and Tommy Rees taunting Stanford and David Shaw as the Cardinal sit at home and watch football this season.

Then again, I tend to hold a grudge. (Tremble for a 24-yard gain)

3 — Book hits McKinley and then Mayer on consecutive snaps—Notre Dame has quintupled its first quarter yardage total from last week against Duke.

Seems like there are a lot more things that are positive compared to last week, but I digress…

4 — I’m enjoying the Tremble/McKinley blocking era of September 2020. By the way, I am positive that Notre Dame will finish with its fifth undefeated September of the Kelly Era.

Book scores on a scramble to the right (field) pylon and the Irish lead 7-0. Really nice hesitation fake in space to juke the linebacker.

5 — No Notre Dame eligible receiver was open by more than six inches on that touchdown run by Book. Yikes.

6 — Jack Kiser and Clarence Lewis earn starting roles due to Covid-related absences at Buck and cornerback, respectively. Kiser’s second snap is a backside Stuff (TFL, actually), shooting the gap.

    — Combined Stuffs last week for Shayne Simon and Marist Liufau in 59 snaps at Buck…zero.

7— Walk-on Matt Salerno returning punts today, much to the delight of Notre Dame message board posters across the Interwebs…Shanked.

8 — Wait, 30-year old punter? How did I miss this? ND should’ve negotiated to have John Goodman return Trent Schneider’s punts. Or wait, did they? I can’t tell…

9 — Braden Lenzy makes his first impact on the season with a 22-yarder on a play-action designed roll-out from Book. Speaking of Bubbles, let’s keep Lenzy in one—the Irish have no downfield weapon to threaten Florida State’s secondary in two weeks without him.

10 — 3rd-and-3 and Chris Tyree hammers for four yards, untouched until he crossed the marker. The OL/DL mismatch today is stark, but I still love how Tyree doesn’t dance.

Tyree seems to know the reality of the position at an early age: ‘The first four yards belong to your coach. The rest is up to you.’

11— Look at Tyree! Shedding fools down to the one-yard line. Give him a reward here, coach!

12 — Four tight ends including fullback Tommy Tremble and it’s a toss sweep (Read that whole sentence back and if your heart doesn’t go pitter-patter then we can’t be friends!) Touchdown Tyree Untouched… the freshman’s first.

Kraemer, Hainsey, and Tremble just murdered their assigned defenders and Mayer won (with a little needless handful, late).

    Irish lead 14-0

13 — Not sure either Jack Lamb or Drew White chose the correct gap on this Johnny Ford run. Shaun Crawford slides down as Ford cuts back and 43 yards later slips down looking for more.

And that concludes South Florida’s offensive highlights for today’s first half.

14 — Third-and-9 and Kiser is there to erase Jordan McCloud’s escape to the left boundary.

Fourth down and USF lines up to punt but no one is buying that at the Irish 33-yard line.

15 — Isaiah Foskey’s three years at ND are going to be memorable. Fake punt (direct snap to a wide receiver) snuffed out in space and the Bulls chose the wrong guy to test on the edge. My goodness that’s an athlete!

Jack Lamb comes in to help late and the Irish will take over on downs.

16 — C’Bo Flemister barreling over the right side for 11 yards. Dude runs with abandon.

17 — Tremble has some space crossing from right to left. If he sits down or takes it vertical, that’s a completion as Book is staring him down as the junior instead runs into coverage across the hash. Nice check down on the move to C’Bo who takes a shot but the first one rarely gets him down.

18 — C’Bo for 11 more. That’s C’Borious to you, from now on. Grown man runner doesn’t go by any nickname…

19 — There’s a chance Michael Mayer is already the second-best blocking tight end this team. But if not, he’s 2B, not #3.

20 — Split-back with Williams and Armstrong. Armstrong + split-back is his future. He’s Stuffed, tentatively, I might add, though the Irish near side did him no favors, with Kraemer allowing penetration and lead blocker Williams thus peeling off to help, allowing his assigned defender to make the play.

21 — Delayed inside ‘backer blitz (well-timed as Banks engaged with a lineman and Patterson/Kraemer were doubling opposite). I think Book fumbles here. Ruled incomplete.

    That’s a fumble in my world. 3rd-and-13

22 — Backfield wheel (designed screen but with the eligible tight ends blocking at the second-level post catch) and Armstrong collects a pass in stride, runs through a tackle attempt, and hammers to the 2-yard line.

Tommy Tremble brutalizes his assigned defender. Good job by Mayer initially but he let his man go and that contributed to the tackle.

23 — Not a number we want to highlight this week around the program…

24 — Four tight ends again and had Armstrong followed Tremble to the boundary he’d have scored. Stopped at the 1-yard line instead. You could argue Kraemer allowed penetration (and thus the tackler) but I think Armstrong was supposed to go outside Kraemer, which means that was a quality seal block by the fifth-year guard.

Book scores on a sneak one snap later, 21-0 Irish early in the second quarter

25 — Patterson man-handled the nose tackle on Book’s sneak. Yikes.

26 — There’s a good chance Jordan Botelho enjoys contact more than you or I…

27 — Kiser Stuff. Get used to it. (Well, you know…

28 — Tre Dukes is open but the ball bounces in front of him and behind him. New South Florida head coach Chad Scott has now coached offenses led by DeShaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence….and also these two guys.

29 — 3rd-and-8 draw by MTA handles it for his first Stuff of the contest to force a punt— a bad punt that is almost blocked off the edge, as none of the three protectors notice Botelho firing off the edge.

Weird, because I just logically assume Botelho was also screaming at the top of his lungs while he was sprinting to rip off the punter’s foot—I mean to block the punt. I meant to block the punt.

30 — Williams for 10 (behind Tremble, Hainsey, Kraemer, Patterson, Banks, and Wilkins)…Williams for 13 (behind Tremble, Eichenberg, Banks, Patterson, Hainsey, Wright and Kraemer)…

C’Borious for a 26-yard touchdown (behind Hainsey, Tremble, McKinley, and Wright) and this feels like a different era. Or 2017, I suppose.

Irish lead 28-0. Good series by Brock Wright in the run game. Maybe I spoke too soon.

31 — Intermixed above among that Gloriousness highlighted by C’Borious, Book missed a wide open McKinley high and behind with no defender in the TV picture.

    I don’t get it…

32 — Flemister, Tyree and Williams (especially) are like pinballs out there. They also benefit from a head of steam provided by voracious blockers, both at the point, and in space.

33 — South Florida limps through another three-and-out. KJ Wallace with his first career TFL on an end-around. Paul Moala influenced the play first though.

34 — Tyree follows Tremble, Wright, Eichenberg, Banks, and Patterson for a career-best 31-yard gain. Also a nice stutter step in space to make a defender miss (as he should in this instance).

35 — Book to Lenzy for 9 yards, and lo and behold “a little sugar” (per Brian Kelly) as fullback Tommy Tremble takes a 3rd-and-1 handoff for 4 yards and a first down. Best run by a fullback in South Bend since Rashon Powers-Neal.

Tremble flexes, as well he should…

36 — I don't know if you guys picked up on this on the broadcast, but the announcers seem to favor Tommy Tremble…

37 — “That’s an accurate shot out of the backfield to Kyren Williams…” Paul Burmeister’s surprise tone tells you all you need to know about Book’s pedestrian start to the 2020 campaign.

38 — Read-option handoff to Williams is Stuffed to the field. Book had forever and a day to run to the boundary had he kept it instead…

3rd-and-3 TFL (Williams is strung out—they did not follow Tremble, much to the chagrin of Tony Dungy) and Jon Doerer follows by hooking a 38-yarder the end of an oddly unsuccessful drive

39 — Jack Kiser’s a good football player. Finds the ball. Is aggressive through blocks. Clark Lea is a brilliant human. Shame on Notre Dame for selfishly hoarding his talents when he could be working for NASA or analysis of high-level encryption to keep our country safe.

40 — Speaking of high level analysis: JOK and Foskey are pretty. Blowing up this for a 3-yard loss with help from #26, Julian Love…I mean, Clarence Lewis. Foskey sprinting from the backside to share the TFL but JOK made the play by shooting the gap.

41 — Bad snap and Botelho impales the punter, Trent Schneider (who someone got off a punt to the 25-yard line from deep in his own end zone). Irish ball.

42 — Kyren Williams on a counter to the boundary behind Tremble, Banks’ inside seal, and a pulling Kraemer. 13 yards. That kid is fun to watch run. Vision and intelligence in a runner is highly underrated at this level.

43 — Williams makes a man miss, follows a collapsed line courtesy Eichenberg, Banks, and Patterson, and is correctly called down inside the 1-yard line by instant replay. Book scores his third touchdown of the half, a program first for a running back in any half.

Which is really, really strange to me.

    35-0 Irish at the break

44 — First Half Defensive Drive MVPs:

    • Kiser
    • Kiser, Foskey
    • Kiser, MTA
    • Wallace, Moala
    • Kiser, Lewis, JOK, Foskey

Just like we drew it up in August, right?

45 — Brian Kelly’s halftime speech: Endorsed. Wholeheartedly.

46 — Cam Hart in on the boundary for Nick McCloud—can’t flail like that in space attempting a tackle when your current top trait is unique size at the position.

47 - Drew White with the QB pressure, then a 1-yard run Stuff. The best news of the season at Mike, however, is that they have an able rotation to date with Bo Bauer. Together they’ll exceed 30 Stuffs this season.

48 — Daelin Hayes left a little laundry on the field, juked in space for a would-be TFL and instead a first down on 3rd-and-1.

49 — Clarence Lewis in man coverage, breaks up a not-so-great deep back-shoulder throw.

White and Lacey share a TFL two snaps later and USF faces 4th-and-2 at the Irish 45-yard line.

50 —Kiser is held, too bad, Griffith did a good job of fighting off a block in space but needed some reinforcements and it would’ve been Kiser. First Down USF.

51 — Kiser and Foskey. Stuff.

Foskey should soon (Oct. 10?) usurp half of the team’s snaps at defensive end…however you have to make that happen. His suddenness and range makes a difference and he’s proven to be an intelligent young end.

52 — Another fourth down, this time White with the late pressure and Clarence Lewis with the breakup though he should’ve picked it off at full speed. White had his eyes on Jordan McCloud, saw him move up in the pocket and possibly threaten with a run, and attacked.

53 — Tyree on the Jet sweep, dodges a few flailing ankle tackle attempts (Wright, Eichenberg, and Banks win) and picks up 15. Looking forward to the first time he hits a crease and really turns it on. This was stop-and-start by necessity.

54 — It’s surprising now when there isn’t a massive lane to run through. Williams stuffed here, though there was a cut-back alley to the field side…

55 — After Tremble gains 9 on third-and-10, Williams follows McKinley, Wright, Tremble, Kraemer, and Hainsey over a caved in right side for an easy four yards on 4th-and-1. Fumbles, fortunately recovered by a diving Patterson.

It’s the second time today an Irish runner fumbled fighting for extra yards after breaking the initial tackle attempt (Flemister).

56 — Tyree OUTSTANDING pass protection as Book drops it in behind Tremble on a wheel route. A 27-yard gain thanks to the replay official.

57 — First and Goal at the 10-yard line…the Irish are in the Pistol but Wright stops crossing on a cross (???) and Book later misses short of Joe Wilkins on a corner route by about two feet, doinking it off the cornerback’s helmet.

    I remain confused.

Doerer from 22 yards for a 38-0 lead midway through the third.

58 - Botelho shows his inexperience, too high one-on-one with the quarterback and its a 13-yard gain at the freshman’s expense. He’ll extract a measure of revenge, soon…

59 — Analysis: Clarence Lewis can play. Tremendous timing to break up a well-thrown post pass into the end zone. Lewis doesn’t panic of flail wildly at the ball—it seems like he’s tracking a ball moving slower than it is.

DJ Brown drops what should be interception No. 2 for him in as many weeks. He could use a dose of confidence, too.

60 — A Jack Lamb pressure forces 3rd-and-6 and…wait…is that? THE RIGHT KINDA GERMAN!!! BIG EHRENSBERGER! Sack off the edge. What the hell is going on with these rookies today!

    Speaking of which…

61 — Another bad snap, Osita Ekwonu with the deft block of a scrambled punt on the run, and Jordan Botelho scoops and rolls (short of the goal line) for a gifted touchdown.

God helps those that hustle…and apparently smites those that have but one college-level long-snapper in the Covid Era.

Irish lead 45-0 as the replay gods decide not to delay the inevitable.

62 — On the ensuing kickoff, Houston Griffith is not quite as disgusted with his egregious tackle attempt as I am, but to his credit, he does seem a touch miffed. You know, 82nd ranked player nationally, Year #3, Career Game No. 25 or so…maybe go ahead and make that tackle?

    Bo Bauer does instead.

    63 — I bet South Florida’s quarterbacks can’t hit the practice net, either…

64 — Drew Pyne, who looks like the oldest kid on your 12u Little League team from 1986, kicks off his career with a 5-yard pass to fellow freshman Kevin Bauman (!!) and a 4-yard run on 3rd-and-5. Kudos to Pyne for grinding on that run after first hit as the Irish punt.

65 — Put your mask on, Book. Those sidelines are infectious…

66 — Foskey again. He has three pressures and played (a total of) 32 snaps.

67 — Lamb shows up again on the blitz and Cam Hart clearly interferes. These snaps will be good for Hart who’s transition will be ongoing this season. He had no idea where the ball was on that snap, but one snap later, Hart registers the fourth down PD in the end zone.

68 — Jordan Johnson with a frustration punch post play. He later returned to the game which means one thing to me: Brian Kelly knows he has to keep him mentally engaged moving forward.

69 — 2nd Unit OL in as Gibbons, Correll, and Kristofic blow a hole for Flemister and a 12-yard gain…Bauman and Dirksen as well. Even Matt Salerno (WR) gets into blocking mix.

70 — Can you imagine if this offense still had Claypool blocking, too? They’d be arrested for mayhem and creating a public nuisance, weekly….

71 — JD Bertrand with a physical run blitz. Man, they come in waves! Who coaches these guys, anyway? Oh that’s right…

72 — Kiser again with the TFL. On Third Down. This is borderline ridiculous how well the 3rd string Buck, the 4th string Buck (Lamb) and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd String Mike ‘backers showed on Saturday.

73 — Flemister spins over right tackle (Bauman, Takacs, Lugg) for 8 more yards…Flemister spins out of a tackle and fights for a first down on 3rd-and 2, quality block by Gibbons—looked like Correll and Dirksen had a double-team controlled but both went looking for more work, allowing a free shot at Flemister that C’Borious shed…

74 — C’BORIOUS. 31 yards behind Takacs, Dirksen, Lugg, and Xavier Watts. Jordan Johnson won early, too.

75 — Flemister for 12 more and he has something to say after contact. Botelho, Tremble, and Flemister play with an admirable fury.

76 — Second String OL is really rolling here, providing Armstrong a lane five yards…but after a 3-yard loss on 3rd-and-2, Irish face 4th-and-5 at the 5-yard line…

77 — Lugg, Dirksen, and Gibbons win a the point as does Watts (again) in space as Armstrong strolls in untouched.

52-0 Irish after the PAT and this one’s in the books.

78 — I disagree with Dungy on this topic: You can absolute roll all five running backs out there, at least over a two-game span. Feed the most physical runners each week.

79 — What ND won’t likely do is rely on, and keep happy, many wide receivers in 2020. It’s a Tight End/RB offense in congress with this offensive line. You’re going to see a dearth of backup snaps for receivers once the Irish offense settles on its Top 3 perimeter options along with McKinley.

That’s okay. This isn’t Happy Camp.
